Choose based on the soundtrack you want, not on a blanket claim that one service has more game music. Nintendo Music is a Nintendo Switch Online benefit with Nintendo-specific discovery features and mobile offline downloads. Spotify is a documented option for the Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 game soundtracks, and may suit you if the exact soundtrack you want is available in your existing Spotify library. Search for the game you care about before deciding.
What is the difference between Nintendo Music and Spotify?
Nintendo Music is Nintendo’s soundtrack service for Nintendo Switch Online members. It focuses on Nintendo game music and offers features tied to Nintendo games and, for some recommendations, your Switch play history. Spotify is a general music-streaming service; the official Spotify announcement cited here confirms a Nintendo Game Music playlist featuring two named game soundtracks, but it does not establish Spotify’s full video game soundtrack catalog.

That means the useful comparison is the exact game and the listening features you need. Neither service can be called the universal winner on the available catalog evidence.
How the services compare
| Your priority | What is established | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo game music and Nintendo-specific discovery | Nintendo describes a growing Nintendo catalog, playlists, play-history recommendations, spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks, and extensions for selected tracks. | Start with Nintendo Music and check whether your game is listed. |
| Super Mario Galaxy or Super Mario Galaxy 2 | Spotify’s April 24, 2026 announcement names the official game soundtracks for both titles. | Spotify is a documented option for these releases; check the live playlist. |
| Offline listening | Nintendo explicitly offers offline downloads on supported smart devices. The Spotify source reviewed does not establish a comparable plan-specific detail. | Nintendo Music has a documented offline option. Check Spotify’s current plan and app terms for your account. |
| Keep soundtracks with your existing music library | Spotify’s announcement confirms a Nintendo game-music playlist, but not availability of every game soundtrack. | Search Spotify for the exact game before relying on it. |
| Avoid game spoilers or discover music from your play history | Nintendo documents spoiler hiding for selected soundtracks and play-history-based recommendations. | Prefer Nintendo Music if those features matter and the title is available. |
| Avoid paying for another membership | Nintendo Music requires Nintendo Switch Online. A current region-specific price comparison with Spotify is not established here. | Compare current local terms and consider memberships you already pay for. |
What Nintendo Music includes
Nintendo describes the service as exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online members. The app is free to download, but an active Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required to use the music service. A Nintendo Switch console is not required. Nintendo lists smart-device access and browser access; its U.S. page also lists Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Browser visitors can inspect the library, but membership is needed to use the service.

Catalog and discovery
Nintendo’s current U.S. service page states that Nintendo Music has over 250 hours spanning more than 130 titles (Nintendo, 2026). This is Nintendo’s own changing catalog claim, not an independently audited count. Nintendo of Canada’s how-to page gives Animal Crossing: New Horizons as an example of a large listing, with 407 tracks; that is a Nintendo-published example, not a cross-service benchmark. Catalog contents can change as Nintendo adds music.
Nintendo’s documented tools include ready-made and custom playlists, search by game, track, playlist, or screenshot, and filters by original platform, app addition date, and original game release year. It also describes recommendations based on Switch play history and a My Mix playlist based on that history. Some functions are app-only; the support guide distinguishes “Top tracks” from “All tracks.”
Listening controls
On supported mobile devices, tracks can be downloaded for offline listening. For selected tracks, Nintendo offers extensions to five, ten, fifteen, thirty, or sixty minutes. The service also has spoiler hiding for selected game soundtracks, useful if seeing a track title could reveal an event you have not reached in a game.

Nintendo’s support guide lists Data saving, Balanced, and High quality settings. Those are available settings, not evidence of a measured sound-quality advantage over Spotify; no comparable technical measurements are established here.
Regions and membership terms
Nintendo Music Support’s article, updated June 2, 2026, lists 47 named regions and says more may be added. Availability and membership terms depend on country, so check Nintendo’s current support information for your region. Nintendo’s official page offers a seven-day trial subject to conditions, including automatic renewal unless canceled; review the current local trial and renewal terms before starting it.
What Spotify’s Nintendo announcement establishes
On April 24, 2026, Spotify announced a “Nintendo Game Music Official Playlist” containing official game soundtracks from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. This confirms those named releases as of the announcement, not a complete inventory of Spotify’s video game music or continuing availability in every region. Search Spotify for the specific game or track and verify that it is currently playable in your account’s region.
Spotify also announced a separate playlist for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A movie soundtrack is not the same as a game soundtrack, so check the release and track listing rather than assuming a film playlist contains the game music. Spotify’s announcement also mentioned an in-app Luma playback-bar appearance for Premium subscribers; that cosmetic feature does not establish soundtrack availability or a sound-quality difference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for the game you want
- Name the exact game or track. Search each service for the title, then confirm that the results are the soundtrack you mean—not a film score, cover, remix, or similarly named release.
- Check the live listing in your region. Catalogs and licensing can change, so an announcement or search result does not guarantee that every track is playable for your account.
- Match the features to your listening. If offline mobile listening, spoiler hiding, or play-history recommendations matter, Nintendo documents those functions for Nintendo Music. If keeping the soundtrack alongside your Spotify listening matters, check whether Spotify currently has the exact release.
- Account for memberships you already have. Nintendo Music requires Nintendo Switch Online. Compare current local terms for both services instead of assuming either option is free or that one is cheaper.
Can you compare the catalogs or sound quality?
Not reliably from the published counts and announcement available here. Nintendo’s title and hour figures describe Nintendo Music alone, while Spotify’s official announcement is about a focused playlist and names two game soundtracks. Those figures do not reveal which service has the larger overall game soundtrack catalog. Likewise, Nintendo lists quality settings, but no side-by-side technical measurements establish which service sounds better. For a particular game, current availability is the meaningful test.
