80 PLUS Bronze vs Gold vs Platinum vs Titanium: Which PSU Rating Do You Need?

80 PLUS tiers compare PSU efficiency at specified loads, but the right choice depends on your exact model, PC compatibility, budget, and evidence beyond the badge.

For most PC builders, there is no single 80 PLUS tier everyone needs. Choose a power supply by its exact model, wattage, form factor, connectors, and independent test evidence first; use Bronze, Gold, Platinum, or Titanium to compare certified efficiency at specified loads. Gold sets higher minimum efficiency than Bronze in the relevant desktop categories, while Platinum and Titanium raise the thresholds further. Those tiers do not, by themselves, establish reliability, noise, protections, or compatibility.

What an 80 PLUS rating measures

CLEAResult describes 80 PLUS as “a performance specification and certification program for internal power supply units (PSUs).” The tier indicates minimum conversion-efficiency thresholds at specified load points for a particular input category. It is not a complete quality grade or a measure of how suitable a PSU is for a gaming PC.

For ordinary desktop supplies, the relevant official tables are the 115V internal non-redundant and 230V EU internal non-redundant categories. Do not compare those figures with thresholds for workstation, server, redundant data-center, or industrial supplies. The program says certified products and testing reports can be checked through its product portal.

Bronze vs Gold vs Platinum vs Titanium efficiency

The following are the official minimum efficiency thresholds for internal non-redundant desktop PSUs. The applicable input category matters: 115V and 230V EU values are not interchangeable. “Not specified” means the cited desktop table does not list a required value at that load point for that tier.

115V desktop category

Tier 10% load 20% load 50% load 100% load
Bronze Not specified 82% 85% 82%
Gold Not specified 87% 90% 87%
Platinum Not specified 90% 92% 89%
Titanium 90% 92% 94% 90%

These are minimums at the listed certification test points, not promises for every load a computer might draw. Among these four tiers, Titanium is the only one with an explicit 10% desktop load requirement in this table. CLEAResult’s program requirements identify the category and thresholds.

230V EU desktop category

Tier 10% load 20% load 50% load 100% load
Bronze Not specified 85% 88% 85%
Gold Not specified 90% 92% 89%
Platinum Not specified 92% 94% 90%
Titanium 90% 93% 95% 91%

Because these thresholds differ from the 115V values, check the category shown for the product rather than assuming a rating has one universal set of numbers. The official requirements page is maintained by CLEAResult and can change.

What the tier does—and does not—tell you

A higher tier requires a PSU to meet higher efficiency thresholds at the applicable test points. It does not prove that a particular model is quieter, more reliable, better protected, or compatible with a particular PC. Those are separate questions that require model-specific test results and manufacturer specifications.

An individual report illustrates why the exact model matters: a CLEAResult-hosted report for Great Wall’s CRPS1300D5 records a 230V, 60Hz test on 2024-02-08, with efficiency of 94.08% at 20% load, 94.40% at 50% load, and 92.45% at 100% load; the report states Platinum compliance. These are that model’s reported results, not typical or guaranteed results for all Platinum PSUs. View the certification report.

Efficiency also should not be turned into a promised electricity-bill saving. The certification thresholds describe performance at test points; they do not establish a universal savings figure or payback period for a buyer’s system and usage.

How to choose a PSU rating for a gaming PC

  1. Confirm fit and system requirements. Check the wattage recommendation for your components, PSU form factor, required motherboard and graphics-card connectors, and the case’s PSU clearance. Use component and PSU manufacturer specifications; an 80 PLUS tier does not determine the wattage you need.
  2. Verify the exact model and certification. Search the full product model in the CLEAResult portal and inspect its listing or test report. A badge or product-family name alone is not a substitute for checking the precise unit.
  3. Compare efficiency for your context. Use the correct 115V or 230V EU category and consider how closely your expected system load relates to the listed test points. The tier does not predict a buyer’s actual bill or establish that a more expensive tier will pay for itself.
  4. Evaluate the rest of the PSU separately. Look for reputable, model-specific testing of electrical behavior, protections, and noise, then compare the warranty and specifications. Efficiency certification does not certify those attributes.
  5. Compare candidates as complete products. Weigh verified model and category, efficiency at relevant test points, wattage and connector/form-factor fit, independent test findings, warranty, and price. A higher tier is meaningful as an efficiency threshold, not an automatic overall upgrade.

So, which rating do you need?

Pick the tier that fits your budget and priorities after you have found a correctly sized, compatible PSU with credible model-level evidence. Bronze, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium tell you progressively higher minimum efficiency requirements within the same desktop input category; they do not rank every aspect of PSU quality. For a specific buying decision, compare the exact models rather than choosing by badge alone.
