What Is a Modular Power Supply? Modular vs. Non-Modular PSUs

Modular PSUs let you detach some or all cables. Compare fully modular, semi-modular, and non-modular designs to understand cable routing, cost, and what to check before buying.

A modular power supply lets you detach some or all of its cables. A fully modular PSU has detachable cables throughout; a semi-modular PSU has a mix of fixed and detachable cables; and a non-modular PSU has fixed cables. The practical difference is how much choice you have when connecting and routing cables—not a guarantee of better efficiency or performance.

What does “modular” mean in a PC power supply?

A power supply unit (PSU) delivers power to a computer’s components through cables. With a modular PSU, some or all of those cables can be unplugged from the PSU itself. That lets a builder connect only the detachable cables needed for the system. CORSAIR describes the benefit as: “These allow you to connect only the cables you need.” CORSAIR’s explanation of modular and regular PSUs covers the three common cable designs.

Fully modular, semi-modular, and non-modular: what changes?

PSU design Cable arrangement What it means when building
Fully modular All cables detach from the PSU. Connect the cables the build needs and leave unused cables out of the case.
Semi-modular Some cables are fixed; others detach. Unused detachable cables can be left out, but fixed leads still need routing. Which leads are fixed depends on the model.
Non-modular All cables are fixed to the PSU. Any unused leads still need to be routed or tucked away inside the case.

Fully modular

Every PSU cable can be removed. This gives the builder the most flexibility to connect only the leads required by the components. It can make cable routing simpler, especially when a case offers limited room for cables.

Semi-modular

A semi-modular unit combines fixed and detachable leads. For example, CORSAIR says its CX-M semi-modular units retain at least the ATX 24-pin and EPS12V 8-pin cables, while other fixed leads can vary by model. That is an example from that product series, not a rule for every semi-modular PSU. Check the specific model’s documentation to see which cables are fixed.

  • 80 PLUS GOLD CERTIFIED
  • 10-year limited warranty, guaranteeing long term reliable operation
  • Fully modular design
  • ATX 3.1 & PCIE 5.1

Non-modular

All cables are attached to the PSU and cannot be disconnected. If the build does not use every lead, the extras must be routed or tucked away. A fixed-cable model may still suit a build if its price and cable layout work for the builder and case.

How much does modularity matter for cable management?

The main advantage is cable selection: a modular unit lets you omit unused detachable leads. Fewer cables to route may reduce clutter and make it easier to work within a case, but the difference depends on the case, the components, and the builder’s preferences. Thermaltake notes that case space for cable routing can be limited in its discussion of modular and non-modular PSU trade-offs.

CORSAIR RM1000x ATX 3.1 PCIe 5.1 Ready Fully Modular 1000W Power Supply – Low-Noise, Cybenetics Gold Efficiency, Native 12V-2x6 Connector – Black
  • Fully Modular: Reliable and efficient low-noise power supply with fully modular cabling, so you only have to connect the cables your system needs.
  • Cybenetics Gold-Certified: Rated for up to 91% efficiency, resulting in lower power consumption, less noise, and cooler temperatures.
  • ATX 3.1 Compliant: Compliant with the ATX 3.1 power standard from Intel, supporting PCIe 5.1 and resisting transient power spikes.
  • Native 12V-2x6 Connector: Ensures compatibility with the latest graphics cards with a direct GPU to PSU connection – no adapter necessary.
  • Embossed Cables with Low-Profile Combs: Sleek, ultra-flexible embossed cables look great and make installing and connecting the RMx a breeze.

Modularity does not itself establish a universal improvement in airflow, temperatures, noise, or electrical performance. The cited manufacturer guidance supports a cable-management comparison, not a performance ranking among the three designs.

Does a modular PSU cost more?

Price is a model-specific trade-off, not a dependable rule for every PSU or market. CORSAIR says fully modular models cost more than semi-modular and regular options in its comparison, and Thermaltake also notes possible added cost. Neither source provides a current market-wide price comparison. Compare the actual models and local prices rather than assuming a fixed premium.

Does modularity mean a PSU is more efficient or better?

No. Modularity describes whether the cables detach; it is separate from efficiency certification. MSI lists full, semi, and unmodular cable designs separately from 80 PLUS certification in its power-supply selection guidance. A modular label alone does not tell you whether a PSU has suitable wattage, the connectors your components require, the right physical fit, or a particular level of electrical quality.

How should you choose between modular and non-modular?

Start with the PSU model’s suitability for the computer, then treat cable design as a convenience and price consideration. Before buying, check:

  • Wattage needs: Confirm the specific PSU can support the system you are building.
  • Required connectors: Check that it provides the connections required by the components.
  • Case fit: Confirm the PSU fits the case and consider how much room the case leaves for cable routing.
  • Fixed versus detachable leads: For semi-modular models, consult the model documentation to identify which cables cannot be removed.
  • Actual price: Compare specific models at the prices available to you; modularity does not imply a universal price difference.

If you value leaving unused cables out of the case, fully modular gives you the most cable choice, while semi-modular offers some of that flexibility. If fixed leads are manageable in your case and a particular non-modular model fits the build and budget, the cable design alone is not a reason to rule it out. The manufacturer product pages for Seasonic CORE GX, Seasonic CORE GM, and CORSAIR VS500 illustrate fully modular, semi-modular, and fixed-cable categories respectively; those examples are not endorsements or independent performance tests.
