For storage you can leave attached while playing on either handheld, choose a microSD card. Valve documents microSD expansion on all Steam Deck models, and ASUS specifies a UHS-II microSD slot on the 2023 ROG Ally. An external SSD is more suited to a docked or desk setup, but its game-library compatibility depends on the device’s operating system and configuration. The available official documentation does not establish that it loads games faster than a microSD card.
Which option is better for portable play?
A microSD card is the clearer choice if you want extra storage installed in the handheld without carrying a separate drive and cable. Both devices have a built-in microSD slot: Valve says all Steam Deck models support storage expansion via microSD, while ASUS lists a UHS-II slot for the 2023 ROG Ally. These are manufacturer compatibility specifications, not game-loading benchmarks. Valve’s Steam Deck hardware page and ASUS’s 2023 ROG Ally page describe those respective options.
An external SSD makes more sense if the handheld usually stays on a desk or connected to a dock. It adds a drive and cable to the setup, and you should confirm that your operating system, drive format, launcher, and library configuration support the way you intend to use it. Steam Support documents connecting USB peripherals through USB-C docks or hubs on Steam Deck, but that does not establish that every drive, enclosure, or game-library setup works on either handheld. Steam’s docking guidance explains the Deck’s dock and hub context.

Does an external SSD load games faster?
The available official sources do not provide a controlled, like-for-like comparison of game loading from a microSD card and an external SSD on either handheld. Interface labels and advertised drive speeds are not the same as measured load times in a particular game. Without a reliable matched test for the device and game you use, there is no supported time or percentage advantage to quote.

If loading speed is decisive, look for independent tests that compare the same game, device, and conditions across both storage options. Treat results from a different model or setup as limited evidence rather than a guarantee for your own handheld.
What to check before buying
- Device model: Valve’s hardware page covers Steam Deck models and built-in storage configurations; it presents microSD as an expansion route. ASUS’s UHS-II slot detail is for the 2023 ROG Ally and should not automatically be applied to later models. Check the specification for your exact device.
- Card compatibility: Confirm supported capacity and speed information with the device manufacturer before choosing a microSDXC card. A manufacturer compatibility listing is not a neutral performance test.
- External-drive setup: For an SSD, verify that the handheld’s operating system and your game launcher can use the drive as intended. A USB-C port or dock’s support for peripherals alone does not guarantee a working game library.
- Your usual location: If you play handheld away from a desk, the card avoids the extra drive and cable. If the device mostly stays docked, an external SSD may fit the arrangement, subject to compatibility checks.
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ includes information about microSD and docking. Its cited material does not provide enough detail to treat a particular filesystem or formatting sequence as universal. For manufacturer-listed device compatibility, Lexar’s 2026 Q1 compatibility list names Steam Deck and ROG Ally; it is a vendor list, not an independent benchmark.
