Choose a USB-C hub or dock for a monitor, peripherals, Ethernet, and charging. Choose an SSD dock only if you specifically need a drive connection built into the dock; a standard hub does not add storage. For most desk or TV setups, start with a hub or powered dock whose video, ports, and charging match your handheld. If you want more game storage, compare a microSD card or a separate external SSD setup instead.
What is the difference between a USB-C hub and an SSD dock?
A USB-C hub expands the handheld’s connections. Depending on its specifications, it may provide video output, USB ports, Ethernet, and power passthrough. An SSD dock adds a drive interface as well as whatever other connections its model includes. The name “dock” alone does not mean a product has an SSD slot.
That makes these accessories different tools rather than direct substitutes: buy for the connection you need, and verify the exact product’s ports and supported drive type before ordering.
Which should you choose?
Choose a basic USB-C hub for a monitor and a few accessories
If your setup needs a display and a keyboard, mouse, or controller receiver, a compact hub is often enough. Valve says any USB-C hub can expand Steam Deck’s options. For either handheld, check that the specific hub supports video over USB-C and provides the ports you need; not every hub offers video, Ethernet, fast data, or charging passthrough.

- BUILT-IN M.2 SSD ENCLOSURE, NOT JUST A HUB: The SABRENT HB-6PNV puts a real M.2 SSD enclosure inside a 6-port USB-C hub. Fit your own M.2 NVMe or SATA drive in the 2242, 2260 or 2280 form factor; the aluminum body and an integrated thermal pad keep it cool while it works. One integrated USB-C cable to your laptop gives you your ports and your storage in the same unit. Drive sold separately.
- 10GBPS TO THE LAPTOP, 5GBPS TO THE DRIVE: Know both numbers before you buy. The integrated USB-C cable connects to your computer at 10Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 2x1). The internal M.2 slot runs at up to 5Gbps, which is quick for photos, project files and backups but is not the full rated speed of a modern NVMe drive. Two of the USB Type-A ports run at 5Gbps (USB 3.2 Gen 1x1, commonly called USB 3.0) at 5V/900mA, and a third Type-A port runs at 480Mbps (USB 2.0) for a keyboard or mouse.
- 4K 60HZ HDMI PLUS GIGABIT ETHERNET: Mirror or extend to one external display at up to 4K@60Hz through the HDMI 2.0 port, and drop onto wired Gigabit Ethernet (1GbE) through the RJ45 jack when the Wi-Fi will not hold. Video output requires a host that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode) - most USB-C laptops have it, but check yours first, because a USB-C port without DP Alt Mode carries data and no picture. One HDMI output, not two.
- 90W BYPASS CHARGING TO YOUR HOST DEVICE: Plug your own USB-C charger into the hub and up to 90W of USB Power Delivery (PD 3.0) passes straight through to the laptop or tablet on the other end, so one cable handles data and charging together. Worth being clear if you are shopping for a powered hub: that power goes to your host device, the USB Type-A ports supply 5V/900mA, and no charger or power adapter is included in the box.
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY, AND THE LIMITS IN PLAIN TERMS: Works with Windows, macOS and Linux - MacBooks, laptops, tablets, smartphones and handhelds including the Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally - and an onboard LED confirms the hub is live. The M.2 slot takes 2242, 2260 and 2280 drives only, so 2230 and 22110 drives will not fit, and there is no SD or microSD card reader on this model. In the box: the hub, an M.2 rubber fastener, the heatsink screw and screwdriver, and the user manual.
Choose a powered dock for a regular desk or TV setup
A powered dock is a better fit when you want the handheld connected to a display while charging, or need several peripherals and wired networking in one place. Check how the dock receives power, whether a charger is included, and how much power reaches the handheld when the display and other devices are connected.
Choose an SSD dock only when you need its drive connection
An SSD dock can suit a setup where you specifically want a drive attached through the dock. Confirm that it actually includes an SSD slot or enclosure, that the drive type and size are supported, and whether the connection and design fit your intended use. For external game storage, a separate SSD enclosure may be a simpler alternative. An external drive used for storage is not the same thing as replacing the handheld’s internal SSD.

- OFFLINE CLONER, NO COMPUTER NEEDED: Copy one SATA drive to another at the press of a button, up to 60MBps, with the dock unplugged from any PC. Target drive must be the same size as the source or larger.
- READS AND WRITES TWO DRIVES AT ONCE: Both bays mount as separate drives when connected to a computer over USB, so you can move files between them or work off both. Hot-swappable, tool-free, with an HDD access LED per bay.
- SATA ONLY, 2.5in AND 3.5in: Fits bare 2.5in and 3.5in SATA hard drives and SATA SSDs. It does NOT support IDE/PATA drives, drives with a 4-pin Molex power connector, M.2 or NVMe drives, and drives are not included.
- WHAT COMES IN THE BOX: Docking station, power adapter and a USB Type-C cable. The cable is USB-C on the dock end - check your computer has a USB-C port or add your own USB-C to USB-A cable before you order.
- USB 3.0 SPEEDS UP TO 5GBPS: Plug and play on Windows and Mac with no drivers to install. Real-world speed is set by the drives you fit - a mechanical hard drive will not reach 5Gbps, and offline cloning runs up to 60MBps by design.
What do Steam Deck and ROG Ally support?
Steam Deck
Valve lists USB-C with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and USB 3.2 Gen 2 in the Steam Deck technical specifications. Its Docking Station is described as connecting the Deck to external displays, wired networking, USB peripherals, and power. Valve also says any USB-C hub can expand the Deck’s options. See the Steam Deck technical specifications, Steam Deck Hardware, and Steam Deck FAQ.
Valve’s specifications distinguish LCD and OLED models, so check the generation you own rather than assuming every product listing or specification applies identically to both.

ROG Ally and related handhelds
ASUS documents the ROG Gaming Charger Dock for connecting an ROG Ally to an HDMI display, USB-A peripherals, and USB-C charging. ASUS lists that dock’s HDMI 2.0 output at up to 1080p at 120 Hz or 4K at 60 Hz; those are specifications for this named dock, not a guarantee for other hubs or docks. ASUS also describes the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 as a 7-in-1 dock with HDMI 2.1, Ethernet, USB-C charging, and data transfer up to 10 Gbps. Check the exact model and regional specification, including whether a power supply is included. See ASUS’s ROG Gaming Charger Dock specifications and ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 specifications.
What to check before buying
- Video: Confirm that the hub or dock supports video output, then match its HDMI or DisplayPort version and supported resolution and refresh rate to your monitor or TV.
- Power: Check USB-C Power Delivery input and output, whether the charger is included, and what power remains available to the handheld with other connections in use.
- Ports: Count the USB-A and USB-C ports you need, and check their data speeds. Confirm Ethernet or audio only if you need those features.
- Storage: Verify that an SSD dock includes a drive bay or enclosure, and check the supported drive size and protocol. A USB port on a hub is not itself an SSD slot.
- Setup: Consider the dock’s footprint, cable arrangement, and whether it holds the handheld in the position you want. A separate hub, stand, and charger may suit a portable setup better than a larger dock.
External game storage is different from an internal SSD upgrade
If you only need more space for games, microSD is another option. Valve lists UHS-I microSD support for Steam Deck models, and ASUS says the ROG Ally can use a microSD card for installed games. Check each handheld’s storage guidance for details: Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications and the ASUS ROG Ally Series FAQ.

For an internal SSD replacement, the drive’s dimensions matter to the handheld and replacement process, not automatically to an external dock. ASUS’s upgrade guide says an external SSD enclosure can be used to clone the current drive before replacement. It distinguishes the original ROG Ally’s M.2 2230 SSD from the M.2 2280 drives used by newer ROG Ally X and ROG Xbox Ally-family devices. Follow instructions for the exact model, and verify that any enclosure supports the drive you are handling; an enclosure used for one format is not necessarily compatible with another. See ASUS’s ROG Ally SSD upgrade guidance.

No. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says docking is “more akin to plugging a USB-C hub into a PC” and that the Deck runs at full performance in portable mode. A dock adds connections; Valve does not describe it as a performance upgrade.
