To complete “Breaking the Siege of Kvatch,” speak to Savlian Matius at the barricade, close the Oblivion Gate by activating the Sigil Stone at the top of its tower, then help Savlian’s soldiers fight into the city. Speak with Savlian at the Chapel of Akatosh and recruit Brother Martin to continue the main quest. If Martin is not in the chapel, check the refugee camp below Kvatch.
1. Start the siege task with Savlian Matius
Find Captain Savlian Matius at the barricade outside Kvatch and offer to help. His soldiers cannot advance while the Oblivion Gate is open. The GameSpot walkthrough and the Game8 Remastered guide both describe the gate as the first obstacle in the assault.
2. Enter the Oblivion Gate and reach the tower’s top
Go through the gate and follow the route across the Oblivion plane and through its connected towers. Daedra, falling rocks, and mines can make the trip hazardous, so keep an eye on your health and use the active quest marker if a room name or route cue in a walkthrough does not match what you see.
Decide what to do with Ilend Vonius
Ilend Vonius can accompany you as an optional ally or be sent back to help Savlian. The walkthroughs do not identify either choice as a requirement for closing the gate. Keeping him gives you help during the tower route; sending him back preserves his support for the force outside.

Find the Sigil Stone
Continue upward through the Blood Feast and connected areas. In the route described by GameSpot and GameBanshee, you encounter Menien Goneld and a Sigil Keeper carrying the Sigil Keep Key. Reach the upper Sigillum Sanguis chamber and activate the Sigil Stone. This closes the gate and returns you to Kvatch.
3. Report back and fight into Kvatch
Once back outside, speak to Savlian and tell him the gate is closed. Join him and the guards as they push into the city, and help clear the Daedra on the route to the Chapel of Akatosh. The city assault is part of reaching the chapel and Martin; the castle assault is not required for that rescue.

- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernises the 2006 Game of the Year with all new stunning visuals and refined gameplay.
The Oblivion plane and the city fighting both involve multiple Daedra. Healing and repair supplies can be useful, but the amount of preparation you need depends on your character and difficulty. Ilend may also provide combat support if you chose to keep him with you.
4. Speak with Savlian, then find Brother Martin
At the chapel, speak to Savlian to advance the siege sequence. Brother Martin is there during the rescue, so talk to him and ask him to accompany you to Weynon Priory. GameSpot notes that Martin can instead be at the refugee camp below Kvatch if a soldier has already evacuated the civilians before you speak with him. Check your active journal objective and the camp if he is not in the chapel.

Is the Castle Kvatch battle required?
No—not to find Martin and continue the main quest. Game8 and GameSpot treat “The Battle for Castle Kvatch” as a separate follow-on quest, and Bethesda’s June 11, 2025 Update 1.1 notes refer to “The Battle for Kvatch” separately. You can take on the castle battle immediately or return to it later. If your journal has already advanced you into that quest, follow its current objective; the guides do not establish that the castle assault, Colovian Signet Ring, or Kvatch Cuirass is necessary to recruit Martin.

Bethesda’s June 2025 Update 1.1 notes include a fix for Savlian becoming stuck after the Castle Courtyard fight in “The Battle for Kvatch.” That note concerns the follow-on castle content; it does not establish that the gate-closing objective has a current, widespread blocker.
