Gears of War: E-Day is The Coalition’s return to the series’ beginning: a mainline origin story about the first Locust emergence, built on a new Unreal Engine 5 foundation. The studio has described years of pre-production and a project shaped by the period after Gears 5 and Gears Tactics, but it has not disclosed a dated start point that confirms development lasted exactly six years. The “six-year journey” is best understood as a framing for a long creative process, not a verified production timeline.
Why The Coalition went back to the beginning
Announced in June 2024, Gears of War: E-Day takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War. It follows younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust first emerge on Sera. Creative director Matt Searcy described the catastrophe as foundational to the series: “It’s the heart of the Gears universe. Everything that happens is shaped by this day.” Xbox Wire’s 2024 interview presents the premise as a return to the event that shaped the world and its characters, rather than simply another installment in the existing timeline.
The choice was also a response to where the franchise’s stories had left the studio. In a later interview, Coalition developers said they chose an origin story instead of moving directly to Gears 6, looking to recover the series’ emotional core: brotherhood, brutality, pathos, and the terror of confronting the Locust as unfamiliar creatures. Xbox Wire’s 2026 conversation describes the decision as deliberate, not as evidence that the later storyline has been discarded.
The Coalition had explicitly said in 2024 that E-Day was a mainline entry and that it was not abandoning the stories established in Gears 4 and Gears 5. The origin story therefore serves two purposes: it gives newcomers a clear point of entry and lets longtime fans revisit the franchise’s defining crisis without erasing what came after.

What is known about the development timeline
The project followed a period in which The Coalition was finishing Gears 5, its Hivebusters expansion, and Gears Tactics. The studio’s 2024 account connects this transition with its adaptation to COVID-era changes in how it worked. That disruption gave the team room to reflect on what it and players valued in the series before deciding what a new Gears game should be. The studio’s account does not provide a specific project start date.
A 2026 Official Xbox Podcast discussion includes a developer recalling promises made “four or five years ago in pre-production,” and refers to the journey beginning after work on Gears 5 and Gears Tactics was finished. That establishes a substantial pre-production period, but it does not identify the calendar year when E-Day began or show that the quoted interval covers the entire development cycle. The podcast recollection is relative, not a dated production record. As a result, “six years” should not be presented as an independently confirmed duration.

A new technical foundation—and the studio’s claims
The Coalition says it rebuilt E-Day in Unreal Engine 5, including its characters, environments, and animation. Technical director Kate Rayner outlined ambitions for ray-traced lighting, reflections and shadows, destruction, gore, and animation. She called the goal “to, once again, set a new standard in technical excellence.” The studio also claimed the game would contain over 100 times more environment and character details than Gears 5. These are developer statements about design and technical goals, not independent performance measurements. Xbox Wire’s 2024 interview

The announcement does not establish a required graphics card or provide independent benchmark results. The July 2026 PC announcement

Why rebuilding the gameplay sandbox meant leaving features out
The studio says it began with an “empty hard drive” and created a new gameplay sandbox intended to serve the campaign, PvE, and PvP with a more unified foundation. The Coalition says that work opened new approaches to cover, combat, and enemies. It also meant the team could not carry every legacy feature into the launch version. The Coalition’s feature update names Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, some weapons from earlier games, private lobbies, and leaderboards among the features absent at launch.
The update says the team will consider what to deliver later or in a future title; it does not promise that any particular omitted feature will return or give a timetable. It also describes a hybrid camera-and-muzzle approach for Gnasher hipfire, a concrete example of how the new sandbox can change familiar combat behavior.

What E-Day’s journey says about this Gears entry
E-Day’s defining trade-off is a fresh start in the past rather than a direct continuation in the present. The Coalition is using a new engine foundation and a newly built gameplay sandbox to revisit the series’ origins, while accepting that some familiar multiplayer and combat features will not be present at launch. That approach makes the game a deliberate reintroduction to Gears’ central catastrophe—not proof of a precisely six-year production cycle, and not a cancellation of the later story.
