Layoffs or redundancy risk have been reported among Ninja Theory staff, while Xbox is consulting employees over a proposed closure of the Cambridge studio. Xbox has not announced that Ninja Theory has closed, and no confirmed total for affected staff has been published.
Has Ninja Theory started laying people off?
Yes, staff layoffs or redundancy risk have been reported. In a report updated October 6, 2026, Gadgets 360 said Ninja Theory employees had begun reporting layoffs or the risk of redundancy in social media posts. The report said the studio had not confirmed how many people were affected.
Katrin Mair, a Ninja Theory gameplay programmer, wrote in an employee post quoted by the report: “It’s incredibly sad knowing that we won’t get to finish what we were working on. So much care, talent and effort went into it, and I really wish we’d had the chance to see what it could have become.” Her post reflects an employee’s account; it is not an official announcement that a particular game has been cancelled.
Is Xbox closing Ninja Theory?
Xbox has begun employee consultation on a proposed closure, but its September 22 announcement did not say the studio had already shut down. Xbox executive Matt Booty said: “We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” The wording leaves open the possibility of another outcome.

Xbox said two separate agreements to transfer Ninja Theory to new ownership had fallen through. It did not state why the agreements failed, so the reasons should not be assumed.
How the proposed closure developed
| Date | What Xbox or reporting said |
|---|---|
| July 6, 2026 | Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the company planned to reduce its workforce by approximately 3,200 roles across FY27, with approximately 1,600 role eliminations that day. Xbox also said Ninja Theory and Undead Labs had entered terms to join new ownership, with funding to complete and grow their respective games. These were Xbox-wide workforce figures, not a Ninja Theory layoff count. Xbox’s July announcement |

How many Ninja Theory employees are affected?
No confirmed Ninja Theory-specific layoff total is established in the available statements and reporting. The approximately 3,200 planned reductions across FY27 and approximately 1,600 immediate eliminations announced in July cover Xbox’s broader workforce restructuring; neither figure is a count of Ninja Theory employees.

Ninja Theory’s official About page describes the Cambridge studio as a team of “just over 100 people.” The page is undated, so that description should not be treated as a current headcount or as the number affected by layoffs.

The October report identifies Senua, described as a third Hellblade title, as planned for PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PS5 in 2027. Its fate is unclear amid the proposed closure: the sources reviewed do not establish that it has been cancelled or that its release date has changed. Mair’s reported comment about not finishing work is not, by itself, confirmation of the project’s status.
