That makes “Rockstar is sidestepping Trump and MAGA” a reasonable interpretation of the approach—not a direct quote from Humphries or confirmation that GTA VI has no related political themes.
What Rockstar says GTA VI will satirize
In a LOVE Magazine interview reported by VGC on October 5, 2026, Rockstar Games senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries said the writers were drawn to conspiracy theories and the public’s unusual reactions to ordinary events. “We took things that interested us, like the conspiracy theories, the strange ways the public reacts to everyday occurrences, and those are the kinds of things we ran with,” he said, as quoted by VGC.

That identifies subjects the writers chose to develop; it is not an exhaustive list of the game’s satire. The interview reporting does not have Humphries explicitly name Donald Trump or MAGA. The clearest supported distinction is between copying a current political figure or movement and satirizing broader patterns through invented, heightened material.
Why use fictionalized satire instead of direct references?
Humphries told LOVE, as reported by VGC, that Rockstar generally creates “our own slanted, overblown versions” rather than a like-for-like depiction of something real. He also tied that choice to the years-long development cycle: a trend prominent for a short time may have faded by the time the game arrives. His example of a trend lasting six months was illustrative, not a measured statistic.

His reasoning is about durability as well as creative style. Rockstar aims for satire that can still feel relevant at release, rather than anchoring the game to a single fleeting headline. As Humphries put it, “We work on it for years and years, so you need to make content that will feel vital to the moment of release,” according to VGC’s interview report.
Political atmosphere, without a one-to-one portrait
Avoiding direct likenesses does not mean avoiding politics. VGC reports that GTA VI’s world may include election signs, campaign robocalls, political ads and radio talk shows. Those details can create a recognizably political backdrop without establishing that a specific real politician or movement is being portrayed.

PC Gamer’s October 4, 2026 coverage likewise quotes Humphries describing the game’s approach to representing contemporary life: “If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face.” PC Gamer reports that Humphries said the game will contain political material and “culture wars”; that is compatible with satire built from fictionalized versions rather than direct copies.
How Leonida fits the premise
GTA VI is set in the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page describes protagonists Jason and Lucia becoming involved in “a criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida.” The setting gives Rockstar room to invent stories and institutions while drawing on recognizable contemporary cultural patterns. The official premise does not, by itself, identify any conspiracy theory or political movement as a target.
