Starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, Magic’s first set of 2027, Wizards of the Coast is changing both Booster Packs and Collector Boosters. The changes include rare God Packs, new foil-card possibilities and the removal of foil commons and uncommons from Booster Packs. Wizards says the changes will not increase prices.
What is changing in Magic booster packs?
Wizards announced the changes on October 5, 2026. Play Boosters will be renamed simply Booster Packs, and the new configurations begin with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm. Wizards says the rollout will continue with each Magic Multiverse set; Universes Beyond sets are expected to receive the changes in 2028. Wizards’ announcement describes the goal as making openings more exciting and meaningful without increasing MSRP.
Booster Packs
- One in every 1,000 Booster Packs will contain a God Pack with 14 rare or mythic rare cards.
- Traditional foil Japan Showcase cards can appear in the wildcard slot.
- Wizards says foil rare and mythic rare drop rates will increase, but did not publish numerical before-and-after rates.
- Foil commons and uncommons are being removed, as is the guaranteed foil. If a Booster Pack contains a foil, it will be rare or mythic rare.
Collector Boosters
- One in every 300 Collector Boosters will contain a God Pack.
- Two commons and one uncommon are removed from Collector Booster foil slots, with no replacement in those slots.
- Some foil commons and uncommons will remain in Collector Boosters because they will not be available in Booster Packs.
What is a God Pack?
A God Pack is a rare booster in which every nonbasic card is rare or mythic rare. Wizards has announced different card mixes for the two product types:

These are publisher-announced odds, not a promise about any particular pack or purchase. The Collector Booster version is less rare by the announced frequency and has a stronger foil emphasis, while the Booster Pack version has its own mix of traditional foil Booster Fun cards.

Are Magic booster packs getting more expensive?
Wizards says the changes do not adjust prices and are intended to improve the opening experience without increasing MSRP. The announcement does not provide set-specific retail prices, so it does not establish the price of a particular product at a particular retailer.

Wizards says removing lower-rarity cards creates printing capacity for God Packs and Japan Showcase cards in Booster Packs. It describes the broader aim as making openings more exciting and meaningful. Those are the publisher’s stated reasons; the announcement does not provide independent measurements of player response or of the effects on the opening experience.
