A Beginner’s Guide to Learning Ren’Py and Creating Your First Visual Novel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ren’Py is a free, open-source engine for dialogue-heavy visual novels, branching stories, dating sims, kinetic novels and text adventures. You can create a complete first game without knowing Python: write a short script, add placeholder art and audio, test every route, and package a desktop build. This guide walks you through a finished vertical slice with two characters, one background, music, a choice and two outcomes.

Instructions were checked against Ren’Py 8.5.3, listed by the official site as released May 15, 2026. Version labels and launcher screens can change, so confirm details at renpy.org.

What Ren’Py is—and whether it suits your game

A visual novel combines written narrative, character dialogue, backgrounds, sprites, music, sound effects and player choices. Some are linear “kinetic” novels; others branch into routes and endings. Ren’Py also supports galleries, achievements, custom interfaces and more involved simulations, so it is not simply a book with pictures.

Ren’Py is particularly well suited to dialogue-driven games, dating sims, interactive fiction and narrative prototypes. It is less natural for action games, physics-heavy systems, real-time multiplayer or large 3D worlds. The engine is free for commercial use, but that permission does not cover third-party art, music, fonts, voices or code.

Tool type Best fit Trade-off
Ren’Py Branching, dialogue-heavy visual novels Less suited to action and 3D
Twine Text-first interactive fiction and prototypes Visual-novel presentation requires more work
TyranoBuilder and similar GUI tools Authors who prefer visual authoring May provide less scripting flexibility or include paid tiers
Godot or Unity Broad game types and custom systems More general-purpose setup and engine complexity

Choose based on how you want to work. Ren’Py is beginner-friendly scripting, not a no-code system: indentation, labels, variables and file paths still matter.

Keep the first project deliberately small

Before installing anything, outline a game you can finish in one sitting:

  • One location and one background
  • One or two characters
  • One decision
  • Two short branches or endings
  • A few minutes of playtime

You need a supported computer, basic file management, a plain-text editor, a short story idea and either temporary or finished assets. You do not need Python, advanced mathematics, a graphics tablet, professional art, a commercial music library or a finished screenplay. Placeholder images and silence are better than an unfinished 20-hour project.

Install Ren’Py and open the launcher

  1. Download the current stable Ren’Py 8 release from the official site. Avoid nightly builds for a first project.
  2. Put the SDK in a permanent, writable folder. On Windows, run the downloaded executable and then open renpy.exe. On macOS, mount the disk image, copy the Ren’Py folder somewhere writable and run the application there. On Linux, unpack the archive and run renpy.sh.
  3. Choose a projects directory when the launcher asks. Keep the SDK and projects directory distinct and easy to back up.
  4. Run the built-in Tutorial or sample project before creating your own. It demonstrates the workflow faster than reading every manual page.

Ren’Py’s quickstart recommends Visual Studio Code for new creators and the launcher can help download it. Use any plain-text editor you prefer; do not edit scripts in a word processor that inserts formatting or curly quotation marks. See the official quickstart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create a project

  1. In the launcher, choose Create New Project.
  2. Select or create your projects directory, then enter a project name.
  3. Choose 1280×720 for a first desktop project. It is a practical compromise for the tutorial.
  4. Select an accent color and background color for the generated GUI.
  5. Click Continue, then launch the generated project.

script.rpy is the usual scenario file. screens.rpy contains interface screens, while options.rpy and gui.rpy hold configuration and GUI settings. Put images in images/ and audio in audio/. Translation files belong in tl/. Ren’Py compiles source .rpy files into generated .rpyc files; edit the .rpy source, never the compiled file.

Characters, labels and dialogue

define maya = Character("Maya")
define alex = Character("Alex")

label start:
    maya "I finally made my first visual novel."
    alex "Then let's test it."
    "The room fell silent."
    return

define creates reusable character values. A label names a location in the script; start is the normal entry point. Dialogue begins with a character name, while narration is a quoted line by itself. Indentation is significant.

Scenes, images and transitions

scene bg room with fade
show alex happy with dissolve
hide alex

scene clears the current scene and displays a background. show places an image on screen and hide removes it. Use transitions sparingly so a short game does not feel slow.

Choices and jumps

menu:
    "Tell Alex the truth.":
        jump honest_route
    "Change the subject.":
        jump evasive_route

label honest_route:
    maya "I made this game for you."
    jump ending

label evasive_route:
    maya "The weather is nice today."
    jump ending

label ending:
    "Thanks for playing."
    return

Each menu choice has an indented block. jump moves execution to a named label, allowing routes to converge or finish separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Variables and conditions

default helped_alex = False

label start:
    menu:
        "Ask for help.":
            $ helped_alex = True
        "Work alone.":
            $ helped_alex = False

    if helped_alex:
        "Alex tested the route with Maya."
    else:
        "Maya discovered a bug while testing alone."
    return

Introduce variables after your first branch works. Use default for values that change during play, assign with $, and test with if and else. Python is available for advanced systems, but it is not required for this kind of game.

Add art, music and sound

Create simple folders and keep filenames stable:

game/
├── audio/
│   └── classroom_theme.ogg
└── images/
    ├── bg classroom.png
    ├── alex neutral.png
    ├── alex happy.png
    └── alex concerned.png

Subfolders such as images/backgrounds/, images/characters/, audio/music/ and audio/sfx/ are optional organization choices. Explicit image definitions are safest when automatic naming is unclear:

Build a complete first vertical slice

Replace the generated script with this coherent example after adding the explicitly defined files above:

define maya = Character("Maya")
define alex = Character("Alex")

default helped_alex = False

label start:
    scene bg classroom with fade
    play music "audio/classroom_theme.ogg" fadein 1.0

    maya "Today is the day I finish my first visual novel."
    show alex neutral at center with dissolve
    alex "You look nervous."

    menu:
        "Ask Alex for help.":
            $ helped_alex = True
            maya "Could you help me test the first choice?"
            alex "Of course."
        "Pretend everything is fine.":
            $ helped_alex = False
            maya "I'm completely prepared."
            alex "That sounded convincing."

    if helped_alex:
        show alex happy
        alex "Your story works. Now test the other route too."
        jump good_ending
    else:
        show alex concerned
        alex "You should probably run the script checker."
        jump careful_ending

label good_ending:
    stop music fadeout 1.0
    scene black with fade
    "Maya published her first tiny visual novel."
    return

label careful_ending:
    stop music fadeout 1.0
    scene black with fade
    "Maya learned that testing is part of writing."
    return

Test, lint and debug before sharing

  1. Save the .rpy file and launch the project from the launcher.
  2. Read the traceback when the game stops; it usually identifies a file and line.
  3. Run Check Script (Lint) from the launcher.
  4. Correct the source, relaunch and repeat.
  5. Play every route manually, including loading saves made before and after the choice.

Lint finds potential script errors but does not replace playtesting. Check these common failures:

  • Indentation: statements under menu and each choice must align consistently.
  • Missing colon: write label start:, not label start.
  • Unknown label: every destination in jump happy_end needs label happy_end:.
  • Missing asset: define the image name or correct the path and filename.
  • Quotation marks: use straight quotes in code, not typographic quotes copied from a word processor.
  • Stale generated files: use the launcher’s cleanup or temporary-file options if behavior remains confusing; do not delete source files.

Release test checklist

  • Every menu choice and ending
  • Save, load and rollback at several points
  • Skip, auto-forward, dialogue history and preferences
  • Music starting, changing and stopping
  • Windowed and fullscreen modes at different screen sizes
  • A clean first launch with no missing assets
  • The packaged build, not only the development project

Once you distribute updates, labels, variables and route structure can affect old saves and rollback. Keep backups and version numbers, and test loading an older save after significant script changes.

  • 【Capacitive stylus】This is a capacitive stylus (battery-free, requires no charging, and functions like a fingertip)—not an active stylus. It does not support pressure sensitivity or palm rejection. Build and share a desktop release

  1. Run Lint and complete the full test checklist.
  2. Choose Build Distributions in the launcher.
  3. Select the required targets and let Ren’Py create the archives.
  4. Test each archive on a clean system before uploading it.

The build tools provide packages for Windows x86_64, Linux x86_64 and macOS on Intel and Apple Silicon, as well as market-oriented packages. Ren’Py documentation also describes preparation for itch.io and Steam. Do not repack ZIP or TAR archives on Windows: their permissions are needed by Linux and macOS builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Web and Android are separate targets

WebAssembly builds can be uploaded to itch.io as the generated web.zip, but browser builds have no arbitrary networking, no Python multithreading or Live2D, and can encounter audio, caching, image-loading and download-size limits. Test in real browsers early; see the web documentation.

Android 5.0 and later is supported, but packaging requires the separately downloaded RAPT tool. Back up release signing keys securely and test on lower-powered devices. Mobile interfaces also need touch-friendly layouts and multiple aspect ratios; desktop screens do not automatically translate well. See the Android documentation.

What to learn next

After the prototype is stable, explore Screen Language and GUI customization, translation, galleries, achievements, Python, version control, mobile and web deployment. Plan for translation before putting text into images or rigid UI elements. Leave voice acting, Live2D, online features, complex inventories and persistent unlock systems until the story and route logic are proven. The full documentation index is at renpy.org/doc/html/index.html.

For editing, Visual Studio Code is a practical free option: code.visualstudio.com. A first game can also be made with Ren’Py, a free editor, placeholders and properly licensed or self-created audio. Pay for tools or assets when they save production time, not because they are prerequisites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose your next small improvement

Do not jump from a finished prototype to a massive multi-route production. Add one new scene, one additional choice or one new character, then lint and retest every route. That repetition teaches more Ren’Py than collecting isolated commands.
