What is Alarmo?
Alarmo is a dedicated digital alarm clock built around Nintendo’s audiovisual design. Rather than simply playing a ringtone at a set time, it turns waking up into a small interactive scene: characters appear, music and sound effects build, and movement can affect the alarm.

What comes with it?
The package includes the Alarmo unit and a USB-C cable. An AC adapter is not included, so you need a compatible power adapter separately. Alarmo must remain connected to external power for normal operation; it is not a portable rechargeable alarm clock.
A backup battery preserves the current time during a power outage, but that should not be confused with battery-powered operation.
You do not need a Nintendo Switch console to use the basic alarm functions. Nintendo’s current FAQ also says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to purchase Alarmo as of February 14, 2025. A Nintendo Account and internet connection are relevant to downloading some content and receiving updates.

How the motion-sensitive alarm works
The intended morning sequence is straightforward:
- The selected scene and character appear before the alarm.
- Game-specific sounds begin gently.
- A visitor or character arrives as the alarm continues.
- Waving or moving can make the alarm quieter.
- If you stay in bed, the alarm can become more intense in Steady Mode.
- When the sensor detects that you have left the bed, the alarm is intended to stop and play a victory-style fanfare.
The exact characters, animations, audio, and behavior vary by scene. “Get out of bed to turn it off” is a useful description of Nintendo’s intended experience, not a guarantee under every bedroom layout.
Alarm modes
- Steady Mode: gradually intensifies while you remain in bed.
- Gentle Mode: maintains a more consistent intensity.
- Button Mode: works like a conventional alarm with physical-button controls; motion sensing is disabled.
- Moderate Mode: added through an early software update. Its availability should be confirmed on the device’s current software and regional documentation.
Button Mode is particularly important for shared beds, unusual room layouts, or anyone who finds motion detection unreliable.
The current Alarmo scene library
At launch on October 9, 2024, Nintendo announced 35 scenes inspired by five games. Nintendo’s current U.S. product page lists 74 scenes, including later downloadable content. The catalog can vary by region, account, language, rollout, and software version.

Downloading additional scenes requires internet access, a linked Nintendo Account, and the relevant software update. “74 scenes” does not necessarily mean 74 entirely different alarm systems; they are themed scene variations with their own characters, sounds, and presentation.
What it does outside alarm time
Alarmo’s clock face can use Nintendo-themed presentation, while hourly chimes add game-specific sounds during the day. At night, Sleepy Sounds provide ambient audio intended to help with winding down.
The device also records movement during sleep. That can provide a simple record of how much movement it detected, but it is not equivalent to sleep-stage analysis, heart-rate monitoring, oxygen measurement, or a medical sleep study. Nintendo’s official material establishes movement sensing, not diagnostic accuracy.
Version 4.0.0 keeps the software current
As of May 18, 2026, Nintendo lists software version 4.0.0 as the latest official update. It changed scene selection so users choose a game first and then a scene, and added Shuffle Favorites, which rotates among favorited scenes. The update also includes general stability improvements.
Alarmo displays a notification when an update is available. Select the notification and follow the on-screen instructions. This matters because launch-era guides centered on 35 scenes and the original menu flow no longer describe the whole current experience.

Shared beds and pets
Alarmo cannot identify a particular person. If two people sleep within its detection range, one person getting up may stop the alarm while the other remains in bed; the alarm may then restart if movement indicates that someone is still there. It stops completely once everyone is out of range.

The same principle applies to pets or other movement near the sensor. This is an inference from Nintendo’s person-detection limitation, not a separate pet feature. Couples who need predictable behavior should use Button Mode.
Placement matters
The sensor is not guaranteed to behave identically on every bed or in every room. If the alarm does not respond as expected, confirm that motion controls are enabled, reposition the clock according to the official usage guidance, test it while awake, and install available software updates. If the arrangement remains unsuitable, Button Mode is the dependable fallback.
Power and connectivity
Alarmo is designed to live beside a bed, not travel in a bag. It needs wall power, does not include an AC adapter, and is not presented as a rechargeable clock. Wi-Fi is used for time synchronization, Nintendo Account linking, downloadable scenes, and firmware updates. That does not make Alarmo a general-purpose internet device.
Privacy
There is no camera. Nintendo says movement-related data is not shared from the device. That statement should not be expanded into a claim that no account or network information is ever transmitted; it specifically concerns movement-related data.
Is Alarmo worth $109.99?
Nintendo announced a $99.99 suggested U.S. price at launch, but the current U.S. product page lists a regular price of $109.99. At that price, Alarmo is expensive if judged only as a clock. Its premium pays for licensed Nintendo scenes, polished sound design, interactive alarm behavior, and collectible appeal.
- Buy it if: you are a Nintendo fan, want a phone-free bedside alarm, enjoy themed game audio, or think getting out of bed to silence an alarm will help your routine.
- Skip it if: you want the cheapest dependable clock, battery operation, person-specific detection, medical-quality sleep data, voice control, streaming, smart-home features, or fully custom music.
- For children: the characters and sounds may make mornings more appealing, but test the placement and sensor behavior before relying on it.
- For couples: expect person-recognition limitations and consider Button Mode.
- For travelers: the wall-power requirement and bedside design make it a poor fit.
A conventional alarm clock is likely better for reliability and value. A smart display offers broader functions. A wearable or dedicated sleep tracker offers more detailed personal data. Alarmo’s advantage is different: it makes waking up feel like a tiny Nintendo event.
