A Conversation With Josh Wardle, Creator of Wordle

Josh Wardle made Wordle for his partner. He told TechCrunch how one shared daily answer and spoiler-safe emoji grids helped it spread without turning it into an attention-hungry business.

Josh Wardle made Wordle for his word-puzzle-loving partner, not as a growth business. In a January 2022 interview with TechCrunch, he described how one shared daily puzzle, simple browser technology and spoiler-safe emoji grids helped turn a small website into a social ritual—while keeping it free and deliberately restrained.

Why did Josh Wardle create Wordle?

Wardle, a British-raised New York resident, built the game for his partner, who enjoyed word puzzles. He hosted it on a website under the name Powerlanguage and initially shared it with family and friends. The basic game that spread widely was, in Wardle’s words, already close to what he had built at the start: “What I built [at the start] is the game that everyone is playing today.”

That origin helps explain the game’s modest scope. It was made to be a pleasant puzzle for someone close to him, rather than a product designed from the outset to maximize engagement or revenue.

How did Wordle become a social ritual?

One answer for everyone

At the time of the interview, Wordle offered one five-letter answer each day and gave players six guesses. Because everyone received the same word, friends could compare how they solved the same puzzle. Wardle said that a different random word for every player would have made that kind of shared conversation harder. That is his explanation of the design’s social quality, not proof that any one feature alone caused the game’s popularity.

Emoji grids made results shareable

Wardle recalled that a player in New Zealand came up with a way to represent results using colored emoji squares. The grid let people show how their guesses went without posting the answer itself. Wardle later added result sharing to the game, turning a player-created format into a built-in way to invite others into the daily conversation without spoiling the puzzle.

Personal recommendations carried it outward

The game first traveled through personal sharing. A blog mention by Andy Baio and a New York Times newsletter mention around Thanksgiving helped expose it to more people. TechCrunch reported in January 2022 that Wordle had grown from fewer than 1,000 players to 2 million over a period of weeks. That is a historical figure reported in 2022, not a current audience count.

What made the design feel different?

Wardle discussed Wordle’s limits as deliberate parts of its appeal, rather than merely missing features. In the interview, the game had no registration, no advertisements and only one puzzle a day. Its short, bounded session contrasted with games built to keep players playing indefinitely.

“I think people have an appetite for things that transparently don’t want anything from you,” Wardle told TechCrunch. The game did not ask players to create an account, endure ads or keep going through an endless supply of puzzles. That restraint suited a daily ritual: play, share the result if you want, and come back the next day.

How did the website work?

Wardle described Wordle as a JavaScript website with no backend involved in each guess. After the code had downloaded, the game could continue to work offline. The approach kept the experience technically simple, though it also meant that the solutions were visible in the site’s source code. Wardle treated cheating as low-stakes rather than trying to secure a casual puzzle against determined players.

He also said he had filtered the solution list to remove obscure words that could make a correct answer feel unfair. That choice reflects a design trade-off: a constrained answer list can favor familiar vocabulary and a more approachable daily puzzle over an exhaustive set of possible words.

Why didn’t Wardle turn Wordle into a bigger business?

Wardle said venture capitalists had approached him, but he was not looking to make Wordle his full-time job or invest in growing it as a business. He liked giving the game away for free. Those remarks describe his thinking in the January 2022 interview; they should not be read as a statement of his current plans.

Why was Wordle a website instead of an app?

Wardle said he had no plan to make an app and did not see why his partner needed one to play a game already available on a website. He also questioned whether push notifications and other attention-seeking app mechanics were desirable for this kind of puzzle. These were his views at the time of the interview, not a claim about Wordle’s present distribution or ownership.

A browser game can be opened when a player chooses, without asking for an installation or notifications. An app could offer those conveniences, but Wardle’s design priorities favored a low-friction game that did not compete aggressively for attention.
