A Reddit poster says a PlayStation 5 Pro with its original shell removed has kept working for more than a year inside a cardboard box with an external fan. That is one person’s account, not a verified endurance test—and it does not show that a bare PS5 Pro can safely run without cooling or dust protection.
What the Reddit poster says happened
In a post dated October 3, 2026, a Reddit user who says they run a pawn shop described acquiring PS5 Pro components after a customer removed the console’s parts and returned its empty shell. The poster says they put the components in a cardboard box, added an external fan, and used the system daily with PlayStation VR2. Their update says it was still running more than a year later. The post does not include independent inspection, runtime logs, temperatures, or other operating data.

Wccftech’s report repeats the story but does not independently verify the console’s condition or the claimed duration. The reported setup also included an external fan and a cardboard housing; it is not an example of the console operating bare with no cooling arrangement.
What Sony says about PS5 Pro cooling and dust
Sony’s official PS5 Pro teardown identifies a top-side dust catcher and explains that the console needs substantial airflow. PS5 Pro Mechanical Design Lead Shinya Tsuchida says, “the PS5 Pro requires more air for cooling.” Sony also says its fan is designed to generate airflow more efficiently. These are explanations of the factory design, not approval of a modified enclosure or an external fan setup.

Sony’s PS5 Pro Safety Guide advises preventing dust from building up on the vents and disconnecting the console before cleaning. The poster’s anecdote does not establish how much dust entered the modified build or change that ordinary maintenance guidance.

The account suggests that one modified PS5 Pro configuration may have continued to work, but it cannot establish that removing the shell is safe or reliable. Sony’s materials describe airflow in the designed console and give care instructions for it; they do not endorse deshelling, putting the components in cardboard, or adding an unspecified external fan. No comparative temperature, noise, dust, or reliability measurements are provided.

Sony’s PS5 Pro Console Covers instructions document compatible covers as an accessory. They do not indicate that covers were used in the reported build or that replacement covers would address any cooling issue.
