A Game of Thrones: The Board Game – Digital Edition is most appealing when you have people ready to play: its central attraction is the tabletop game’s mix of military maneuvering, influence and temporary diplomacy, available online or against AI. Whether that appeal outweighs a dated-feeling PC presentation is less certain. Steam’s user-review snapshot was mostly positive, while a 2020 PC Gamer review criticized the interface and presentation; neither is a fresh test of the game’s current technical state.
What kind of game is the Digital Edition?
Developed by Dire Wolf and published by Twin Sails Interactive, the game adapts Fantasy Flight Games’ strategy board game. Steam lists October 6, 2020 as its release date. You lead one of Westeros’s Great Houses and compete for the Iron Throne through influence, diplomacy and military force. This is a negotiation game as much as an army-moving game: the appeal depends on reading opponents and coordinating—or breaking—temporary arrangements. That makes the available player group an important part of the decision, not just a technical detail.
Can you play solo or with friends?
Steam lists online PvP for up to six players and local single-player against up to five AI opponents. These modes answer different needs:

- Solo versus AI: Lets one person play without assembling a group. The store page lists up to five AI opponents; it does not describe their difficulty or how closely they reproduce human negotiation.
If your main reason to buy is a regular game night with friends, confirm that your group can coordinate online before relying on the digital version. If you mostly want to learn or play alone, the AI option is useful, but the available sources do not establish that it can substitute for human diplomacy.
How do reviews assess the digital adaptation?
The available reviews point in different directions and measure different things. Steam’s listing showed 71% positive from 1,703 all-time user reviews when accessed in 2026. This is a changing user-review aggregate, not a critic score. Check Steam’s current listing for the live snapshot.

Jonathan Bolding’s PC Gamer review, published December 20, 2020, scored the game 72. It described the port as functional but basic, faulting the static map, limited presentation and an oversized interface that could not be scaled or altered. Its verdict was: “A functional, basic board game port isn’t enough to truly shine off the tabletop.” Read the PC Gamer review
That criticism is useful if interface clarity and presentation matter to you, but it is a dated PC review—not evidence of the game’s current performance, interface state or condition on every platform. The Steam aggregate offers a broader user snapshot, but does not explain why reviewers liked or disliked the game. Together, they suggest a worthwhile strategic adaptation for some players rather than a clear consensus about its polish.

What changes from the tabletop game?
Asmodee says the main differences are visual: the interface and assets are adapted for digital play. It also says the digital edition includes additional content absent from the original tabletop game. Steam currently lists two DLC items, A Dance with Dragons and A Feast for Crows. The physical second edition remains a separate option if you want the tabletop experience and its in-person interaction. The digital edition’s convenience is playing through a screen, with online and AI modes listed on Steam; whether that trade-off suits you depends on whether convenience or face-to-face play matters more. Who should play it?
- Consider it if you enjoy strategic board games built around negotiation and can play with a group online—or are comfortable facing AI.
- Be cautious if you expect a highly polished PC presentation or need a resizable interface; the 2020 PC Gamer review specifically criticized those areas.
- Compare it with the tabletop version if in-person discussion and physical play are central to what you want. The digital edition’s extra content and convenience do not make either format universally better.
What should you verify before buying?
Prices, discounts, review totals, DLC prices and availability can change. The cited sources do not settle current system requirements, platform availability beyond the Steam listing, or the present status of multiplayer services. Check the live store listing for the platform and purchase details relevant to you rather than relying on older review coverage.
