Nintendo presents A Link to the Past as a Super Nintendo adventure about saving Hyrule, with dungeons and iconic equipment at its center. Majora’s Mask is a Nintendo 64 3D adventure in Termina, where Link revisits the same three days and nights while learning about the people around him.

Choose A Link to the Past first for dungeons and classic 2D exploration
In A Link to the Past, Link sets out to save Hyrule from a wizard seeking to unleash Ganon. If you want a traditional top-down adventure in which dungeon exploration and finding items are major draws, this is the more direct fit. Nintendo highlights the game’s atmosphere, graphics and sound, as well as equipment such as the Hookshot, Pegasus Boots, and Master Sword.

Pick it first if what you most want from Zelda is the classic 2D format and a dungeon-centered journey. That is a recommendation based on the game’s described structure—not a claim that it is objectively easier or better for beginners.
Choose Majora’s Mask first for a time loop and character-focused mystery
Majora’s Mask sends Link to Termina, where he must stop the moon from devastating the land. He relives the same three days and nights, using repeated visits to explore the world and get to know its characters. The loop and the people living within it are central to the adventure, rather than incidental details.

Masks add another layer: Nintendo’s manual explains that some masks can change Link’s shape when worn, giving him different abilities. Choose this game first if a looming deadline, a mysterious atmosphere, and learning characters’ routines appeal more than a conventional dungeon-led adventure. Nintendo notes that the world becomes less intimidating as Link gains knowledge. Its Nintendo 64 manual describes the masks’ transformation ability.

Does Zelda timeline order decide which to play first?
No. Nintendo places A Link to the Past in the timeline branch where the hero is defeated, while Majora’s Mask follows Ocarina of Time in the child timeline. Those placements explain different parts of the series’ chronology; they do not establish a required order for choosing between these two games. See Nintendo’s Zelda timeline.

Nintendo’s October 16, 2024 overview lists A Link to the Past in the Nintendo Switch Online catalog and Majora’s Mask under Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Availability depends on membership, region, and the current catalog; the article is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of what is available where you live today. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online classics overview and your regional service listing before subscribing or planning a playthrough.
Nintendo’s UK pages also list historical Virtual Console editions, but Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases ended on March 27, 2023. Those closed storefronts are not current purchase options. Original SNES and Nintendo 64 cartridges are another route for original-hardware play, but they are legacy items: confirm the listing, condition, and regional compatibility before buying.
