Kingdom Hearts’ portable era was not one kind of game: it spanned Nintendo DS mission play, a three-scenario PSP prequel, a mobile-phone RPG, and a later Nintendo 3DS adventure. Those projects filled different story gaps and experimented with different formats. Today, however, the collections preserve them unevenly: Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are listed as games, while 358/2 Days and Re:coded are presented as HD cutscene compilations.

Why Kingdom Hearts expanded onto portable systems

In 2007, Square Enix announced three projects for three different portable platforms: 358/2 Days for Nintendo DS, Birth by Sleep for PSP, and Coded for mobile phones. The announcement framed them as distinct experiments rather than versions of the same handheld formula: DS multiplayer missions, a PSP story divided among three protagonists, and delivery to mobile phones. Square Enix’s 2007 announcement also identified Tetsuya Nomura as director of 358/2 Days and Birth by Sleep, and h.a.n.d. as a production company for 358/2 Days.

The timing reflected a series that was already growing beyond its first console releases. In that 2007 announcement, Square Enix reported more than 11 million copies shipped in the roughly five and a half years since the original game’s 2002 release. That is a historical, publisher-reported shipment figure, not a current sales total. Square Enix Holdings’ 2025 annual report later reported more than 38 million global package shipments and digital sales; because that measure combines shipments and digital sales, it is not directly comparable with the 2007 shipment-only figure. What each portable entry added

Entry Original platform and structure Story focus How the current collections present it
358/2 Days Nintendo DS; mission-based play, with multiplayer missions highlighted in Square Enix’s announcement. Roxas’s previously untold time in Organization XIII, including his duties and friendship with Axel. HD cutscene compilation, not a playable remaster in the collection.
Birth by Sleep PSP; three scenarios centered on three new protagonists. A story set before Sora took up the Keyblade, presented as a beginning connected to the wider saga. Birth by Sleep Final Mix is listed as a game.
Coded / Re:coded Coded began as a mobile-phone role-playing game. After Kingdom Hearts II, Jiminy Cricket finds a mysterious message in his journal; the characters investigate a data version of it. Re:coded is an HD cutscene compilation, not a playable remake of the original mobile game.
Dream Drop Distance Nintendo 3DS; Square Enix describes its action and exploration as faster-paced. Sora and Riku take the Mark of Mastery exam. Dream Drop Distance HD is a remaster of the portable game.

The platform and story descriptions above come from Square Enix’s 2007 announcement and its official HD 2.8 product page. The present-day formats are identified on Square Enix’s KINGDOM HEARTS Collection page.

358/2 Days: Roxas’s Organization XIII story

Square Enix pitched 358/2 Days as the story of Roxas, the other protagonist whose past had not yet been told. Its Organization XIII duties and friendship with Axel gave the series room to explore a period largely outside Sora’s central journey. Mission framing suited the DS project, and the publisher specifically called out multiplayer missions as a platform-specific feature. That makes the game significant both as a character story and as an attempt to shape portable play around discrete missions.

Birth by Sleep: three paths into an earlier era

Square Enix described Birth by Sleep as three scenarios featuring three new protagonists, set before Sora took up the Keyblade. Instead of continuing one hero’s current journey, it used the PSP to tell a prequel through multiple perspectives. The announcement emphasized the system’s graphics capabilities and storage, distinguishing its presentation ambitions from the DS and mobile-phone projects announced alongside it.

Coded and Re:coded: a story inside Jiminy’s journal

Coded was announced as a mobile-phone RPG. Its premise begins after Kingdom Hearts II, when Jiminy discovers a mysterious message in his journal and the characters explore a data version of the journal. The distinction between the original and its later collection presentation matters: Square Enix lists Re:coded as an HD cutscene compilation, not as a playable remake of that mobile game.

The portable period continued on Nintendo 3DS with Dream Drop Distance. Square Enix says it was originally released in 2012 and describes the HD edition as a remaster of the portable game. Its story sends Sora and Riku into the Mark of Mastery exam, while the official product description characterizes its action and exploration as faster-paced. Square Enix’s HD 2.8 page

How to revisit the portable-era stories now

Square Enix’s current collections include several of these stories, but they do not reproduce every original portable game in its original playable format. The distinction is important if you are choosing a collection to play through the era rather than simply catch up on its plot.

  • KINGDOM HEARTS -HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX-: includes 358/2 Days and Re:coded as HD cutscene compilations, alongside Birth by Sleep Final Mix as a game.
  • KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue: includes Dream Drop Distance HD as a remaster of the 3DS game, the χ Back Cover movie, and the playable 0.2 Birth by Sleep episode.

These formats are listed on Square Enix’s collection page and HD 2.8 page. The cutscene compilations preserve the relevant stories in film-like form, but they are not equivalent to replaying the original DS or mobile gameplay. Square Enix lists physical editions for supported platforms; platform availability and retailer stock can vary.
