The amounts differ in precision and geography: the worldwide figure includes markets beyond the United States, while the domestic total is for the U.S. weekend. They are opening figures, not the movie’s final lifetime gross.
What record did the movie break?
Guinness recognizes A Minecraft Movie for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a movie based on a videogame. That is an opening-weekend record, not the record for the highest-grossing video-game adaptation overall.

The distinction matters: Guinness named The Super Mario Bros. Movie the highest-grossing video-game movie overall as of February 19, 2025. A film can therefore hold the opening record without holding the lifetime-gross record.
How did its opening compare with The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
The Associated Press reported that The Super Mario Bros. Movie had held the domestic video-game adaptation opening benchmark with about $146 million in 2023. Against that comparable domestic, three-day figure, A Minecraft Movie opened to about $162.75 million in the United States.

Keep comparisons on the same basis: a U.S. three-day opening should not be compared as if it were a worldwide total or a five-day opening. The publication and reporting stage matter, too: Sunday estimates can differ from later listed totals.
Why did early reports show smaller numbers?
On April 6, 2025, the Associated Press reported opening-Sunday estimates of $157 million domestic and $301 million worldwide. Those were preliminary estimates at the time, not the later record figures. Box Office Mojo’s listed domestic total for April 4–6 is $162,753,003, and Guinness gives the worldwide opening as $313.7 million.

For another point of reference, Box Office Mojo lists the film’s worldwide lifetime gross as $960,387,780 on its current listing, accessed October 8, 2026. That is a cumulative gross, not the opening-weekend amount, and database totals can be updated.

Box Office Mojo lists an April 4, 2025 release by Warner Bros., a PG rating, and a runtime of 1 hour 41 minutes. The Associated Press described the film as a Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. co-production and reported a $150 million production cost, excluding marketing and promotion.
