For a tour of 3Dfx Glide’s most memorable PC games, start with the variety: Quake II’s gunfights, Tomb Raider’s exploration, the armed-car chaos of Interstate ’76, and the grim strategy of Rainbow Six. This is an editorial shortlist, not a definitive ranking or a compatibility list. Glide was 3Dfx’s low-level library for Voodoo Graphics hardware, and games used it in different ways.

What made a game a Glide game?

Glide was not a generic label for any PC game with 3D acceleration. In its July 30, 1997 Glide Reference Manual, 3Dfx described Glide as “a low-level rendering and state management sub-routine library” serving as a thin layer over the register-level interface of Voodoo Graphics hardware. The library let developers build rendering libraries, games, and drivers for that hardware.

That distinction matters when revisiting period games: a menu option marked “3D accelerated” does not, by itself, establish native Glide support. A 2005 enthusiast forum thread even made the distinction explicit, asking for “NATIVE GLIDE games” rather than Quake II’s MiniGL mode. That discussion is useful evidence of how enthusiasts use the terms, but it is not an authoritative compatibility database.

The following selection follows the range of games highlighted in TechSpot’s retrospective. Game Genre and appeal Glide context
Quake II First-person shooter; weapons, enemies, and network play. Included in TechSpot’s Glide-games selection; the feature does not specify that its Glide presentation is an optional later-edition mode.
Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now Destructive racing and vehicular competition; TechSpot notes its Mature rating in the US context of its article. Included in the selection; no special-edition Glide qualification is given there.
Interstate ’76 Vehicular combat with armed cars and a revenge plot. Included in the selection; no special-edition Glide qualification is given there.
Tomb Raider Adventure built around exploration and Lara Croft. TechSpot illustrates the original 3Dfx presentation at 640×480 and separately shows Glidos with high-resolution textures at 1024×768.
Diablo II Action role-playing with five playable classes and single-player and multiplayer modes. Included in the selection; no special-edition Glide qualification is given there.
Virtua Fighter 2 Fighting game: the PC version followed the 1994 arcade release and 1996 Saturn version, according to TechSpot. Included in the selection; no special-edition Glide qualification is given there.
Resident Evil Horror adventure known for pre-rendered backgrounds and cinematic camera angles. TechSpot says the 1996 PlayStation original reached PC in 1997 and was among the early games to use Glide.
Need for Speed II: Special Edition Driving game with arcade and simulation modes. TechSpot says this edition added Glide support along with visual and smoothness improvements.
MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat Mech combat between rival clans, with a campaign TechSpot describes as having 30 missions. TechSpot says a later release added Glide in 1996.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Tactical action that contrasts planning and lethal combat with arcade-style shooting. Included in the selection; no special-edition Glide qualification is given there.

Where to start, depending on what you want to play

For fast action and multiplayer

Quake II is the direct pick if you want a shooter centered on its weapons, enemies, and network play. Keep the rendering-mode distinction in mind: the 2005 forum example specifically separates MiniGL from what it calls “pure” Glide, so check the individual game’s renderer rather than relying on a broad acceleration label.

For driving and vehicular combat

Choose Need for Speed II: Special Edition for a conventional race-game structure with arcade and simulation modes. Interstate ’76 trades racing for armed-car combat and a revenge story, while Carmageddon II leans into destructive competition. These are three different kinds of driving game, not interchangeable demonstrations of one genre.

For exploration, horror, or role-playing

Tomb Raider is the adventure pick, and TechSpot’s comparison makes clear that its original 3Dfx presentation should not be confused with the separate Glidos, high-resolution-texture image. Resident Evil offers horror framed by pre-rendered backgrounds and cinematic camera angles. For a longer action-RPG commitment, Diablo II brings five classes and both solo and multiplayer play.

For tactical or cockpit-focused play

Rainbow Six suits players looking for tactical planning rather than arcade-style shooting. MechWarrior 2 offers a campaign about rival clans and a 30-mission structure as described by TechSpot. For a different kind of competition, Virtua Fighter 2 brings the fighting-game format to the PC list.

Can you play Glide games on a modern PC?

TechSpot names nGlide and Glidos as emulator routes for revisiting Glide games on modern computer hardware. That is not a guarantee that every game, edition, or current operating system will work the same way. Check the specific game and emulator documentation before choosing a route; the available evidence here does not establish universal compatibility.

Original 3Dfx Voodoo graphics cards are another route for enthusiasts interested in period hardware, since Glide was designed as a thin software layer over Voodoo Graphics. A vintage card is an optional hardware path, not a requirement for every way of revisiting these games. Current card inventory and availability are not established here.
