Windows or an older application may display one of these messages:

  • “This application failed to start because a0001732.dll was not found.”
  • “The file a0001732.dll is missing or corrupted.”
  • “A required component is missing: a0001732.dll.”
  • “Error loading a0001732.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The program can’t start because a0001732.dll is missing.”

a0001732.dll is associated with an old Microsoft IIS component, not a normal standalone game or application runtime. The safest repair is to identify the program, service, or IIS website requesting it and repair or reinstall that parent software.

The 60-second answer

Do not download a0001732.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.

The filename appears to be a renamed archive or catalogue copy of Microsoft’s httpodbc.dll, the Internet Data Connector, also called the Microsoft ODBC HTTP Server Extension. Microsoft documentation identifies Httpodbc.dll as an IIS extension that processes .idc files and connects them to ODBC data sources. Microsoft does not use a0001732.dll as the official filename in its IIS documentation.

Follow this order:

  1. Record the full error path and identify the calling application.
  2. Repair or reinstall that application from its original installer.
  3. Check whether antivirus quarantined a verified file.
  4. Check IIS configuration only if this computer actually hosts IIS or an old .idc website.
  5. Run DISM and SFC if other Windows components are also failing.
  6. Use System Restore if the failure began immediately after a known system change.
  7. Plan to migrate old IDC or HTX technology because modern IIS no longer supports the Internet Data Connector.

What a0001732.dll actually refers to

The identifiable Microsoft component is httpodbc.dll, an ISAPI extension for Internet Information Services. Microsoft describes it as the Internet Data Connector, which allows an IIS website to process .idc files and query ODBC databases through an HTTP request.

Microsoft’s IIS documentation confirms that .idc files are mapped to Httpodbc.dll:

Microsoft’s IIS documentation for IDC and Httpodbc.dll

The name a0001732.dll is not the official Microsoft filename documented for that component. Catalogue data associates the renamed filename with an older IIS build, but that does not prove that every file with this name is an authentic Microsoft binary or that it is interchangeable with every version of httpodbc.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters. A DLL with the right-looking filename can still be the wrong architecture, the wrong version, tampered with, or missing its own dependencies. The repair should therefore begin with the software that requested the file, not with a search for a replacement copy.

Why Windows 11 or Windows 10 may not contain it

The Internet Data Connector is legacy IIS technology. Microsoft states that IIS 6 was the last IIS version to include IDC. Microsoft also states that HTTPODBC.DLL was not supported beginning with IIS 7 on Windows Vista-era systems and recommends ASP.NET or ASP instead.

Microsoft’s IIS compatibility and feature requirements

This means a current Windows installation may legitimately have no httpodbc.dll. Its absence alone does not show that Windows is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enabling modern IIS will not recreate the old Internet Data Connector. Installing the current Web Server role may help a modern website, but it is not a supported way to restore IIS 5- or IIS 6-era IDC functionality.

The error is most likely caused by one of these situations:

Cause What it usually means Correct direction
Legacy IIS application was damaged An old server application or website still needs IDC Repair or reinstall the application
Application was partly removed A service, startup entry, shortcut, or IIS mapping remains Remove the obsolete reference or reinstall the complete product
Antivirus quarantined a file A verified installation file was removed Check Protection History and restore only a trusted file
32-bit application on 64-bit Windows The caller uses older 32-bit IIS or application settings Check the application’s architecture and IIS configuration
Windows component corruption Several unrelated Windows files are also failing Run DISM, then SFC
Recent system change An update, cleanup, or installation broke the setup Try System Restore
Malware or tampering An unexpected binary or IIS installation appeared Scan the computer and investigate the parent process

Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file

This is the most important step. A missing DLL message tells you what the caller wants, but not necessarily which application installed it.

Check the complete error path

Read the entire error carefully. Look for a path such as:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An application folder under C:Program Files
  • A legacy server directory
  • An IIS website directory
  • A temporary installer folder
  • A startup or service location

Do not assume that a file mentioned in an error belongs in the Windows system directory.

If the message appears only when opening one application, that application is the first repair target. If it appears during startup, continue with the startup and service checks below.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an entry connected to the program that shows the error.
  4. Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location, if available.
  5. Record the application name and folder.
  6. Do not delete the entry yet. Use the information to identify the parent software.

You can temporarily disable a clearly identified obsolete startup item, restart Windows, and check whether the error stops. Disabling startup does not repair the missing component, but it confirms that the entry is involved.

Check installed applications

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps.
  4. Search for the application, server package, database tool, or old website software that was installed around the time the error began.
  5. Select its three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair or Reset when the application provides those options.

For a traditional desktop program, open Control Panel:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Control Panel and open it.
  3. Select Programs.
  4. Select Programs and Features.
  5. Select the suspected application.
  6. Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.

Restart Windows after the repair. Start the original application again and check whether the same message appears.

If repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall the damaged application, restart, and reinstall it from the original vendor media or an organization-approved installer. Do not replace one DLL manually and leave the rest of the installation unchanged.

Check Windows services

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type services.msc.
  3. Press Enter.
  4. Look for a service belonging to the application or server software.
  5. Open its Properties.
  6. Read the Path to executable field.
  7. Record the executable path and publisher information.

If the service points to a program that was already removed, the remaining service is probably the real problem. Use the original application’s uninstall procedure when possible. Removing service entries manually can leave additional broken references.

Check Event Viewer

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Open Application and System.
  5. Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
  6. Record the application name, faulting module, service name, and full path.

For an IIS-related error, also inspect Applications and Services Logs for entries related to IIS or the application pool.

The decisive question is: which executable is requesting a0001732.dll?

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the legacy application

If the error belongs to an old server program, database application, or internal website package, reinstall that parent software rather than downloading the DLL separately.

Before uninstalling, preserve any needed data:

  • Website files
  • Database connection details
  • Configuration files
  • Application licenses
  • Custom .idc or .htx files
  • Scheduled tasks and service settings

Then use this process:

  1. Close the affected application.
  2. Stop its related service from Services, if appropriate.
  3. Uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Install the same application from its original, trusted installation source.
  6. Apply the application’s supported updates.
  7. Recheck its configuration and test the affected operation.

If the application requires IDC or old HTX processing, reinstalling it may restore the historical environment only on a system that still supports that technology. On current Windows versions, the permanent solution may be to migrate the site to a supported ASP.NET, ASP, or other web application design.

Do not assume that a modern IIS installation can host the old component. Microsoft identifies IIS 6 as the last IIS version containing IDC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined the file

An antivirus product may have removed a file because it was suspicious, damaged, or located in an unexpected directory. Do not immediately disable protection or download another copy.

To inspect Microsoft Defender:

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Open an item related to the affected application.
  6. Read its original file path and detection details.

Microsoft explains that a quarantined item can be restored, but restoring it may cause Defender to detect it again.

Microsoft Defender Protection History guidance

Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:

  • It came from the original application installation.
  • The application and publisher are known.
  • The file path matches the expected installation.
  • Your security team or the software vendor has confirmed the file is safe.
  • You can reinstall the complete application if the file is removed again.

If the file came from a random DLL download sites site, leave it quarantined. Reinstall the parent application instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check IIS only if you actually use IIS

Do not install IIS merely because the error mentions an IIS-related file. First establish that this computer hosts a website, server application, or internal tool that depends on IIS.

Check whether IIS is enabled

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Windows Features.
  3. Select Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Expand Internet Information Services.
  5. Note which features are enabled.
  6. Cancel if you are only investigating.

On Windows Server, IIS is managed through Server Manager:

  1. Open Server Manager.
  2. Select Manage.
  3. Select Add Roles and Features.
  4. Review the Web Server (IIS) role.
  5. Do not add or remove features until you know what the affected application requires.

Microsoft’s current IIS installation guidance covers enabling supported IIS features:

Microsoft IIS hosting and installation guidance

Enabling IIS may restore a missing modern web-server feature, but it will not recreate the unsupported Internet Data Connector. If an old site contains .idc or .htx files, treat that as a migration project rather than a simple Windows Features repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also distinguish old IDC from modern IIS ODBC logging. They are different technologies. Modern ODBC logging does not provide the old .idc database connector.

Microsoft IIS ODBC logging documentation

Fix 5: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC

Use Windows repair commands when other system components are failing too, Windows Update has errors, or the problem began after system corruption. These commands are unlikely to restore a discontinued IIS extension that is not part of your Windows version.

Save your work, then:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

Microsoft System File Checker guidance

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected application again. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the process only after restarting and checking Windows Update. If the application alone still reports a0001732.dll, return to the parent-application repair rather than repeatedly running SFC.

When manually hunting through Windows component versions becomes confusing, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what it identifies; its free scan shows the findings, while repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the affected legacy application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the missing component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is useful when the error started after a driver installation, cleanup utility, software installation, or Windows configuration change.

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Review the programs and drivers that will be affected.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore normally rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs without changing personal files.

Microsoft System Restore guidance

Afterward, test the original application. If the error returns after reinstalling or updating that application, the application itself may not support your current IIS version.

Fix 7: Check architecture, but do not copy the file into both system folders

Catalogue information associates the renamed file with a 32-bit legacy component. A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications, but the application, IIS settings, application pool, and dependencies must match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not follow generic advice to copy a DLL into both:

  • Please remember that this DVD does not come with a KEY CODE. You will need to obtain a Windows Key Code in order to use the reinstall option
  • C:WindowsSystem32
  • C:WindowsSysWOW64

Those folders are not interchangeable storage locations, and copying an unknown binary into both can make troubleshooting harder.

For IIS, inspect the application pool:

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type IIS.
  3. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  4. Expand the computer name.
  5. Select Application Pools.
  6. Right-click the relevant pool.
  7. Select Advanced Settings.
  8. Check Enable 32-Bit Applications.
  9. Change it only if the application’s documentation requires it.
  10. Restart the application pool and test the site.

If the application documentation does not specify the architecture, contact the software owner or inspect the original installer. Do not guess based only on the DLL filename.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

A missing a0001732.dll is not normally a device-driver problem. Device Manager will not repair a legacy IIS extension. Check drivers only if Event Viewer also reports a device failure, the affected software controls hardware, or the issue began after a driver change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Press Win + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Check the provider, date, and version.
  8. Use Update Driver only when a suitable driver source is available.
  9. Use Roll Back Driver if the problem began immediately after an update.
  10. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not uninstall a working device merely because a DLL error mentions Microsoft or IIS.

If checking dozens of hardware drivers manually is the part slowing you down, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation through the full version is optional. This is not a substitute for repairing the application that actually requests a0001732.dll.

Why regsvr32 a0001732.dll usually fails

Do not run this command as a general repair:

regsvr32 a0001732.dll

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Many ordinary runtime DLLs and ISAPI components do not provide that entry point. Windows may respond that the module loaded but the entry point was not found.

Microsoft regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance

Use registration only when the original software documentation explicitly requires it and supplies the correct file, architecture, and installation path. For this IIS component, reinstalling the complete supported application or IIS configuration is the safer approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What “specified module could not be found” means

That message does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows can show it when:

  • The DLL is missing.
  • The DLL exists but a dependent DLL is missing.
  • The application is loading the wrong architecture.
  • The search path points to an old or removed installation.
  • The file is blocked, quarantined, or damaged.
  • An IIS mapping references a component that the current IIS version cannot provide.

This is another reason that copying a replacement file is unreliable. The missing item may be a dependency or an unsupported feature rather than a0001732.dll itself.

When to investigate malware or tampering

Run a full Microsoft Defender scan if:

  • The file appeared in an unexpected folder.
  • An unknown IIS site or service was added.
  • The binary keeps being replaced.
  • The publisher is missing or does not match the expected software.
  • The error began after installing untrusted software.

Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options, choose Full scan, and follow the results. Defender Offline is appropriate when a persistent threat may be hiding during normal Windows operation.

FAQ

Is a0001732.dll an official Windows filename?

Not according to the Microsoft documentation for this component. Microsoft documents httpodbc.dll or Httpodbc.dll. a0001732.dll appears to be a renamed archive or catalogue filename associated with that legacy component.

Should I download the DLL from a search result?

No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture, and they often do not include required dependencies. Use the original application installer, supported Microsoft repair tools, or a verified backup instead.

Do I need to install IIS?

Only if the affected application genuinely requires IIS. Installing modern IIS will not restore the old Internet Data Connector, which Microsoft no longer supports in IIS 7 and later.

Can SFC restore this file?

SFC can repair protected Windows system files, but it is unlikely to restore an obsolete IIS extension that is not part of the installed Windows version. Repair the parent application first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the error appear on a computer with no IIS?

A leftover startup item, service, scheduled task, or uninstalled application may still be requesting the file. Identify the parent process before installing anything.

Should I use System32 or SysWOW64?

Do not copy an unknown DLL into either folder. The correct location depends on the complete application installation and its architecture.

Should I migrate an old .idc website?

Yes, migration should be the long-term plan. IDC is discontinued IIS technology. Preserve the data and configuration, then move the site to a supported web technology rather than depending on an unsupported extension.

Final troubleshooting checklist

Before considering the issue resolved, confirm that:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You know which executable or service requested a0001732.dll.
  • You repaired or reinstalled that parent application.
  • You checked Defender Protection History.
  • You did not copy an untrusted DLL into a Windows folder.
  • You did not run regsvr32 without vendor instructions.
  • You checked whether the application is 32-bit and whether its IIS settings match.
  • You ran DISM followed by SFC only when broader Windows corruption was suspected.
  • You used System Restore only when a suitable restore point existed.
  • You have a migration plan if the application depends on IDC or HTX.

If the error remains, record the full path, parent process, Windows edition, application version, architecture, and matching Event Viewer entry. Those details identify whether the next repair belongs to Windows, IIS, antivirus, or the legacy application itself.
