Aaron Judge’s status for the Yankees’ American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays was still undecided as of the morning of Oct. 3, 2026. Manager Aaron Boone said the team was evaluating whether Judge could be available at some point in the series after the right fielder began running and took live batting practice while recovering from a right calf strain.

Boone described the decision as an ongoing evaluation, not a confirmed roster choice. “But we’re looking at the days and so it’s more is he going to be available at some point in this series, potentially, as a player?” Boone said, as reported on Oct. 2 by MLB.com.
He also said the Yankees’ trainers would have an important role in the assessment: “The trainers will obviously play a big part in this. As the day unfolds, we’ll see where we’re at and what it potentially looks like for the series.”

Judge has not played since straining his right calf on Sept. 16, 2026. The Yankees left him off their roster for the Wild Card Series against Boston. During his recovery, he took live batting practice and began running, but those activities do not by themselves establish medical clearance or readiness to play. Could Judge be available as a hitter but not play right field?
That was discussed as a possibility, not announced as a plan. Boone said Tropicana Field’s turf factored into the decision “a little bit,” and contemporaneous reporting described the possibility that Judge could be available to hit without initially playing right field. The reporting did not confirm what role, if any, he would have in the series.

Reports said New York had until 10 a.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 3, to submit its 26-player roster before Game 1.
