His friend and corner member Glover Teixeira later said tests showed brain swelling that may have caused the blackout, but that explanation has not been independently confirmed by a treating doctor or a publicly released medical record.
What happened to Raoni Barcelos at UFC Vegas 121?
Barcelos, 39, was ahead on the scorecards entering the fifth round against Raul Rosas Jr. before losing consciousness during the round. Reports said he was stretchered to a local trauma center and taken to hospital for emergency care.
Barcelos posted a hospital update on Sept. 28, saying he felt well and was undergoing tests: “I just wanted to send a message to let you know I’m OK. Yeah, I’m doing really well. I’m getting all the tests done here at the hospital.” That was his own account of how he felt, not a medical clearance. MMA Junkie reported on Sept. 30 that he had been discharged.
What did Glover Teixeira say about the cause?
In an account reported by MMA Fighting on Oct. 2, Teixeira said tests showed “some swelling in his brain,” which he characterized as a traumatic brain injury and said might have caused Barcelos to black out. Teixeira is Barcelos’s longtime friend and was in his corner; the reported explanation is Teixeira’s account of the test findings, not a statement from Barcelos’s treating physician or a released medical record.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Teixeira also stressed that more testing was needed: “He needs to undergo all the proper tests to find out what happened, whether it really was a result of the trauma from the fight.” He said the decision about Barcelos’s fighting future should be made carefully. The public information reported does not establish a final diagnosis or a decision about whether Barcelos will compete again.
Why did reports initially say the cause was unknown?
The reports describe different points in time, not necessarily a contradiction. On Sept. 28, Barcelos said he was still being tested, and the cause had not been publicly diagnosed. After his discharge was reported Sept. 30, Teixeira’s account of what tests showed appeared in reporting on Oct. 2. The underlying records and a treating clinician’s interpretation were not included in that account.

What is known about the “sports medicine doctor” headline?
A Sportskeeda listing identifies a headline about a sports medicine doctor disputing an ex-champ’s claim, along with the byline Ujwal Jain and an article date. The retrieved listing does not provide the article text. As a result, the doctor, the specific claim being disputed, and the doctor’s words cannot be verified from the available material. They should not be attributed or reconstructed.
What can be stated from the reported accounts is narrower: Barcelos lost consciousness and was hospitalized; he said he felt well while undergoing tests; and Teixeira later described brain swelling as a possible explanation while calling for further testing. Those accounts do not establish the contents of Barcelos’s medical record or an independently confirmed cause.
