Texas Gov. Greg Abbott withdrew his endorsement of Republican David Flores after video of Flores’s February DWI arrest circulated in early October. The Houston Chronicle reported that Flores pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DWI in June and was sentenced to probation. The footage also appears to show him invoking political connections while speaking with officers, and the Chronicle said it appears to capture him using a racial slur.
What happened, and when
- February 14: Deer Park police stopped Flores for speeding early in the morning. A police department spokesperson told the Houston Chronicle that a breath test showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.11%. The Chronicle’s October 1 report attributes that figure to the spokesperson; it is not independently verified here.
- June: According to court records cited by the Chronicle, Flores pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DWI and was sentenced to probation. The Chronicle’s account is not itself the court judgment or the underlying police record.
- Early October: Dashcam footage circulated after the Lone Star Project, which the Chronicle described as a Democratic strategy group, obtained and released it. The Chronicle reported on October 1 that Abbott withdrew his endorsement after the video drew attention to Flores’s conduct and language.
What the video reportedly shows
In the footage, Flores appears to refer to political relationships and Abbott’s endorsement while talking with officers. The Chronicle noted that Abbott did not officially announce his endorsement until May, after the February arrest. The paper also said the video appears to capture Flores using a racial slur; the slur is not repeated here. The footage is separate from the reported court outcome: the Chronicle says Flores later pleaded guilty.
Abbott and Perez respond
Abbott campaign spokesman Eduardo Leal said the governor was withdrawing his endorsement, adding: “There is no place for this kind of behavior or language.”
Democratic Rep. Mary Ann Perez, whom Flores is challenging in Texas House District 144, criticized the apparent invocation of political standing. “Public service should never be viewed as a shield from accountability, before or after someone is elected,” she said. Perez added that people seeking public trust should accept responsibility and hold themselves to the standards they expect of others.

Why the race matters—and what remains unknown
The Chronicle described District 144 as one of Republicans’ better opportunities to flip a Democratic-held Texas House seat in November. Perez had represented the district for nearly 10 years, and it voted for Donald Trump in 2024, according to the paper. Those facts make the endorsement withdrawal politically consequential, but they do not establish how voters will respond or whether Flores’s candidacy will be affected at the ballot box.
The headline phrase “Bahahahaaaaa” reflects ridicule in online replies, including one cited by The Nerd Stash in an October 2 article. A handful of posts cannot show what Texans broadly think; no representative polling or systematic measure of reaction is established by the available reporting. The Nerd Stash article reports social-media reaction, not a statewide measure of public opinion.
