Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Naval combat in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced revolves around the Jackdaw, weapon-mode switching, positioning, and a decision after every disabled ship: sink it quickly or board for substantially greater rewards. Every Jackdaw weapon has a secondary firing mode that can be changed while aiming. You gather materials from ships, wrecks, forts, harpooning and exploration, then spend them on upgrades that increase damage, defense and weapon capacity. Boarding takes longer and can cost crew, but Ubisoft says it awards double the loot of simply destroying a vessel and can also repair the Jackdaw, reduce Wanted Level, add a ship to Kenway’s Fleet or yield a Captain’s Lockbox.
The systems below reflect Ubisoft’s May 26, 2026 naval deep dive and launch information. Weapon damage, range and reload figures have not been published, and footage in the deep dive came from a work-in-progress build, so balance and availability can change in updates.

What you do in a typical sea battle
The Jackdaw is your mobile combat platform. You identify a target, choose an approach, use the firing mode that matches your position, expose or attack weak points, and decide what to do once the enemy is disabled. The same loop works against ordinary ships, faction patrols, Pirate Hunters and the larger vessels guarding difficult encounters.

- Scout before committing. Use the Spyglass to inspect a ship and reveal the materials it carries. This lets you prioritize targets that provide the resources needed for your next upgrade rather than fighting whatever is closest.
- Set your position. Bow chasers are useful while pursuing, broadsides require a parallel angle, mortar fire can reach an area from farther away, and stern-launched shrapnel barrels are suited to a pursuer behind you.
- Switch modes while aiming. Each Jackdaw weapon has a secondary mode. Change modes during your attack instead of treating every weapon as a single-purpose gun.
- Exploit openings. Ubisoft identifies additional hull weak points exposed by 8-pounder cannons and other equipment. Forward and side attacks are not interchangeable, so keep turning the ship to present the weapon that best matches the target’s exposed section.
- Reassess when the ship is disabled. Sinking is the fast, low-risk option. Boarding takes time and can cost crew, but it provides double the loot and several strategic benefits.
No official source gives universal numerical damage, range or reload values for the weapons. Treat the following roles as tactical guidance rather than a definitive damage ranking.

Jackdaw weapons and their alternate firing modes
| Weapon or mode | What it does | Best practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Ram Dash | A damaging, bow-first collision move. The Padre unlocks it earlier than in the original game. | Close distance, damage a ship from the front or finish an approach before boarding. |
| Mortar / Deadman’s Cohort | Tobias “Deadman” Smith adds a secondary mortar option that saturates a manually directed area with Carcass bombs. | Pressure targets from a safer angle or punish ships grouped in an area. |
| Bow chaser double shot | A heavy volley fired from the front of the Jackdaw while pursuing. | Keep firing during a chase without giving up your forward line. |
| Broadside heated shot | Multiple quick volleys of fiery projectiles from the side. | Deliver repeated side attacks when you can hold a parallel course. |
| Stern shrapnel barrels | Barrels launched behind the ship that shred enemy sails. Ubisoft says all barrels have a larger area of effect in Resynced. | Slow or disrupt a pursuer while escaping or preparing a turn. |
| 8-pounder cannons | Additional equipment identified in the launch material that exposes more hull weak points. | Open vulnerable sections so subsequent attacks can do more useful work. |
The secondary-mode system means weapon selection is also a timing decision. A broadside is not automatically the right answer just because an enemy is alongside you: a heated-shot volley may be preferable for a quick burst, while a turn can create a better angle for a bow attack. The official naval deep dive shows how Ubisoft expects players to combine these modes rather than repeat one attack.
How to choose between sinking and boarding
When a vessel is disabled, the choice is not simply cosmetic. It trades time and crew safety for loot and utility.
| Choice | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|
| Sink the ship | Fastest resolution; avoids a boarding fight and protects remaining Jackdaw crew. | Misses the additional boarding rewards and services available after capture. |
| Board the ship | Ubisoft says boarding grants double the loot of simply destroying the vessel. You may repair the Jackdaw, reduce Wanted Level, add the ship to Kenway’s Fleet and, on eligible large ships, take the Captain’s Lockbox for extra reales. | Consumes time, exposes you to the remaining crew and can reduce your own crew count. |
Use sinking when you are already damaged, short on crew, under pursuit or trying to escape worsening weather. Board when the target carries materials you need, when you want to lower notoriety, or when a larger vessel offers a lockbox. The exact value of those benefits depends on the ship and situation; the official material does not promise a lockbox on every class.

Boarding procedure
- Disable the target without destroying it. Stop attacking once the ship reaches the state that permits boarding; continuing to fire can remove the opportunity.
- Close the gap and initiate the boarding action. Your approach is part of the risk, especially if another enemy is nearby.
- Reduce the enemy crew’s morale. Fight the remaining crew or cut down their flags until they surrender. Both methods contribute to the surrender condition described by Ubisoft.
- Collect the post-capture benefits. Depending on the vessel, use its resources to repair the Jackdaw, lower Wanted Level, add it to Kenway’s Fleet or take a Captain’s Lockbox. Frigates and Man O’ Wars are the larger ships specifically associated with the lockbox reward.
- Replace losses before the next fight. Recruit at taverns, rescue pirates held hostage on land or find castaways. Entering another battle with a depleted crew makes the next boarding attempt less attractive.
How upgrades and resources change your options
Loot is the progression currency for the Jackdaw, but it is not obtained only by sinking ships. Materials can come from boarded or destroyed vessels, floating cargo, underwater chests, harpooning, forts and burning ships. Harbormasters sell upgrades that increase weapon damage, strengthen defenses and increase the number of weapons available.
Before a fight, use the Spyglass to match a target’s materials to your build plan. If you need defensive resources, choosing a target that carries offensive materials may be less efficient than waiting for a different ship. This is especially important before high-difficulty encounters, where entering with an incomplete upgrade path can turn a manageable attack into a resource drain.
Three officers with permanent combat effects
- Lucy Baldwin: Her quest unlocks Perfect Brace, which can almost nullify incoming damage when timed correctly. It rewards watching the enemy’s attack and bracing at the correct moment instead of holding the defense continuously.
- The Padre: He joins boarding parties and unlocks Ram Dash. His earlier access to Ram Dash in Resynced changes how soon you can build a bow-first attack into your approach.
- Tobias “Deadman” Smith: He enables the mortar’s Carcass-bomb option and an additional broadside volley with minimal cooldown, giving you more ways to maintain pressure.
These are permanent perks after the officers are found and recruited through their quests. They do not replace ordinary upgrades: the officer abilities add tactical tools, while Harbormaster purchases improve the Jackdaw’s underlying combat capacity.

Wanted Level, Pirate Hunters and faction battles
Repeated naval fights raise the sailing Wanted bar. At higher levels, stronger Pirate Hunter ships pursue you, so a profitable sequence of battles can become a chase in which escape matters more than another capture. Ubisoft says you can reduce notoriety through a boarding choice or by bribing an Officer in port.
Faction relationships also change the context of an encounter. Factions have their own alliances and enemies and can fight each other at sea. You can wait for a battle to weaken a target, then attack the survivor, or join an allied vessel against its enemy. Waiting reduces the amount of damage you need to inflict, but it can also let the battle move out of position or attract additional threats.
Weather and sea hazards are part of combat
The Anvil Engine weather system, called Atmos, produces rogue winds and waves, storms and calm conditions. Resynced adds two types of waterspout, while lightning can strike the water and deal area damage. These are not merely visual changes: a storm can alter your route, a waterspout can disrupt an approach and a lightning strike can punish ships clustered together.

- Use stern shrapnel to create separation when a pursuer is taking advantage of rough conditions.
- Brace with Lucy Baldwin’s Perfect Brace when a major hit is imminent, rather than assuming armor alone will absorb it.
- Do not assume a calm approach will remain calm; weather can change the risk profile during the engagement.
Sea activities that feed naval progression
Navigation
Pathfinder highlights a route to a pinned destination while leaving you in control of the Jackdaw. Sea Hands can take over navigation and follow the set route on autopilot. Use Pathfinder when you want route guidance without surrendering control, and Sea Hands when the destination is routine and you want to focus on preparation.
Diving and the Diving Bell
After the story unlocks the Diving Bell, deeper locations become available. They contain rarer loot but also jellyfish, sharks, currents and limited oxygen. Resynced’s Dive Anywhere feature allows shallower free diving for submerged chests or stealthy approaches; the deepest Diving Bell sites still require the apparatus. Plan an exit route before entering a deep site because oxygen and currents limit how long you can search.

Harpooning
Harpooning returns as a minigame using finite harpoons. Successful hunts provide resources for sale or crafting upgrades, so harpoons are a limited supply to manage rather than an unlimited source of materials.

Forts
Fort assaults begin with naval combat and continue on land. After the Jackdaw weakens the fort, the crew disembarks to fight soldiers, reduce morale and confront the commander. Capturing a fort reveals regional points of interest and opens additional Kenway’s Fleet missions, making forts both combat objectives and progression hubs.
Legendary Ships: the endgame test
Four named encounters are designed to test a fully developed Jackdaw and your command of its tools:
- El Impoluto
- HMS Fearless and Royal Sovereign, known together as The Twins
- La Dama Negra
- HMS Prince
Each awards exclusive Jackdaw cosmetics, including figurehead, hull, wheel and sail skins. Ubisoft’s lead naval designer Guilhem Marin warned: “Do not face them unprepared, for they require complete mastery of all the Jackdaw’s tools.” That warning is consistent with the encounter design: there is no published universal build or damage shortcut, so arrive with upgraded defenses, reliable crew replacement options and confidence switching between bow, broadside, mortar and stern tools.
