Before changing anything, confirm:
- Which program fails: AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, or another AutoCAD-based product.
- Whether the error appears at launch, after an update, or immediately after installation.
- Whether the installed application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the error says the file is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows.
- Whether Windows Security recently quarantined an Autodesk file.
- Whether several AutoCAD generations or vertical products are installed.
The clearest public report connects this filename with AutoCAD Architecture 2017. AutoCAD 2017 was available in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, so do not assume that a file from one architecture can replace the other.

What ac1st21.dll is
ac1st21.dll is an Autodesk application file associated most clearly with the AutoCAD 2017 generation. The 21 is consistent with Autodesk’s R21.0 product-generation naming, but Autodesk does not publish a standalone product page for this specific DLL.

C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64
A legitimate copy belongs with the Autodesk product that installed it. Depending on the product and installation, Autodesk files may be under the product directory or a shared-components directory such as:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk Shared
That location is not universal. The correct path is the one created by the matching Autodesk installer.
Commonly reported messages include:
- “The program can’t start because ac1st21.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading ac1st21.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because ac1st21.dll was not found.”
- “ac1st21.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The wording can indicate either a missing file or a damaged dependency. It does not, by itself, prove malware or Windows corruption.

Fix 1: Repair the installed Autodesk product
Repair is the fastest safe fix because it restores the application files and preserves the existing installation state.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Find AutoCAD or the affected AutoCAD-based product.
- Select it and choose Modify.
- In the Autodesk installer, choose Repair.
- Allow the process to complete, then restart Windows.
- Launch the same product again.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify, if available.
- Select Repair in the Autodesk setup window.
- Restart Windows and try the application.
For AutoCAD versions that use the older installer interface, the option may appear under Control Panel → Programs and Features → AutoCAD → Uninstall/Change → Repair or Reinstall.
A successful repair should let the same AutoCAD executable start without the ac1st21.dll message. If the repair option is missing, setup immediately fails, or the error returns, continue with a complete reinstall rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact AutoCAD product
Use this route when repair is unavailable or does not restore startup.
Rank #2
First identify the exact product and release. AutoCAD, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Mechanical, and other vertical products are not interchangeable. Also record whether the installed application is 32-bit or 64-bit. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit application, so Windows architecture alone does not answer this question.
- Back up custom templates, profiles, tool palettes, scripts, and other customizations.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings → Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the Autodesk removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to Autodesk Account and open All Products and Services.
- Select the same product and release.
- Choose the Windows platform and language.
- Use the complete installer, not a partial package.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Finish setup, restart Windows, and launch the product.
If the older release is not shown in Autodesk Account, Autodesk may direct you to Autodesk Assistant or the Autodesk Virtual Agent. Do not substitute a newer AutoCAD release or a different vertical product merely because its installer is available.
If the web installation was interrupted, use Autodesk’s Download or Direct Download method to obtain a complete package. A missing installer component can leave the product installed but without required application files.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or block an application DLL, but the quarantine record must support that conclusion.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
ac1st21.dll, AutoCAD, or the Autodesk installer. - Check the detected file path and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if it came from your verified Autodesk installation and the publisher information is trustworthy.
- Run the Autodesk repair again afterward.
Do not restore a DLL downloaded from an unknown source. If Protection History shows no Autodesk-related event, antivirus is only a possibility, not an established cause. Check the security product’s own logs as well.
If the file repeatedly disappears after repair, inspect real-time protection, installer logs, permissions on the Autodesk directory, and recent disk errors. Do not permanently disable protection as a substitute for identifying the blocked file.
Fix 4: Perform a clean Autodesk removal
A normal uninstall can leave damaged files, cached data, or configuration state behind. Use a clean removal when reinstalling the same product reproduces the error.
- Back up Autodesk customizations and licensing information that your organization requires.
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product from Windows.
- Remove Autodesk products and shared components only when you have identified what belongs to the failed installation.
- Check for leftover folders such as:
C:Program FilesAutodesk<product>C:ProgramDataAutodesk<product>%APPDATA%Autodesk<product>%LOCALAPPDATA%Autodesk<product>- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact product and architecture from Autodesk Account, education access, deployment media, or the original verified installer.
Do not delete shared Autodesk folders blindly when other Autodesk products are still installed. If several products use common components, Autodesk support or your organization’s deployment administrator is the safer route.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only if other Windows files are failing
ac1st21.dll is an application DLL, so System File Checker normally will not recreate it. DISM and SFC are worthwhile when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, update failures, or protected-system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Autodesk repair or reinstall.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to download or reconstruct a normal Autodesk application DLL.
If repeating these commands does not change the AutoCAD error, stop repeating them and return to the Autodesk repair or clean-reinstall path. If manually tracking component corruption and interpreting repeated scan results is taking time, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. Reinstalling the affected Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for a missing Autodesk file.
Fix 6: Check architecture and mixed-version installations
A 32-bit and 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable. Public catalog metadata lists a 32-bit ac1st21.dll entry as version 21.0.52.0, but that metadata is not an Autodesk file manifest and should not be treated as proof that every installation uses that exact build.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check these points:
- The DLL must match the architecture of the AutoCAD application that loads it.
- The DLL must come from the same Autodesk release as
acad.exeand its neighboring files. - Do not replace it with
ac1st19.dll,ac1st22.dll, or another generation. - Do not copy files from a different computer unless the entire matching installation is repaired through its installer.
- Multiple Autodesk products can have similar shared folders and different dependency requirements.
If one AutoCAD release works and another does not, repair the failing release separately. Do not move files between product directories.
Fix 7: Test a new Windows profile
If AutoCAD works for another Windows user, the program installation may be healthy while the original profile contains damaged AutoCAD settings.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Choose Add account.
- Create a local test account.
- Sign in to that account.
- Launch AutoCAD.
If the application works there, reset or rebuild the affected user’s Autodesk profile and settings rather than replacing the DLL. If the same error appears for every user, focus on repair, reinstall, quarantine, and installation architecture.

Drivers are rarely the cause of this DLL error
A graphics driver can cause AutoCAD crashes, display problems, or hardware acceleration failures, but it is not the normal explanation for a missing ac1st21.dll. Update drivers only if Device Manager or the application identifies a separate driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not remove unrelated devices to troubleshoot this DLL. If manually checking hardware IDs and hunting compatible driver packages is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify available updates; installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a replacement for repairing the Autodesk installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 or random DLL downloads
Do not run:
regsvr32 ac1st21.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry points, such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that ac1st21.dll is an ActiveX or COM server that requires registration. Registering it will not repair a missing dependency or reconstruct an incomplete Autodesk installation.
Avoid DLL download repositories as well. A downloaded copy may have:
- The wrong AutoCAD generation.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing side-by-side dependencies.
- An altered or malicious binary.
- No matching installer registration or product state.
The safe sources are Autodesk Account, an Autodesk education portal, approved deployment media, or the original verified Autodesk installer. Repair the complete product instead of treating the DLL as an independent Windows component.

When to use System Restore or contact Autodesk
System Restore is reasonable when the failure began immediately after a recent Autodesk installation, update, cleanup, or system change and no usable installer is available.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete the restore and test AutoCAD.
System Restore is not a substitute for obtaining a clean installer. Contact Autodesk support when licensing, deployment media, shared components, or an older product release prevents a clean repair. Provide the exact product name, release, architecture, error text, installer source, Protection History result, and what repair or reinstall did.
FAQ
Is ac1st21.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence associates it with Autodesk AutoCAD-family software. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Best Value
Which AutoCAD version is involved?
The strongest available association is with AutoCAD 2017-family products, including a reported AutoCAD Architecture 2017 startup failure. The filename alone does not prove that every AutoCAD 2017 edition contains the same file.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Architecture is product-specific. Public metadata lists a 32-bit entry, while AutoCAD 2017 itself was offered in both architectures. Match the DLL to the installed product rather than to Windows.
Will SFC restore ac1st21.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary Autodesk application files.
Why does Windows say the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows”?
The file may be corrupted, incomplete, mismatched, or missing a dependency. Repair or reinstall the matching Autodesk product before investigating Windows itself.
Should I download the DLL separately?
No. A loose DLL can be the wrong version, architecture, or an unsafe replacement. Use Autodesk’s repair and installation routes.
