ac3filter_intl.dll is a support and localization file installed with AC3Filter or a media player that bundles it. It is not a Windows system DLL, so copying it into System32 is usually the wrong fix.
The safest repair is to identify the application that is requesting the file, then repair or reinstall that application from its original installer. AC3Filter is an older Windows DirectShow decoder for AC3 and DTS audio. Its main filter is ac3filter.ax; ac3filter_intl.dll is a companion file.
Fix 1: Identify the application and its file location
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Start here before downloading anything. The program named in the error, or the folder containing the missing file, usually identifies the correct repair.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and message that appears when Windows reports the error. Note whether it occurs:

- When Windows starts
- When a media player opens
- When a video begins playing
- When an AC3 or DTS audio stream is selected
- After uninstalling or updating a media player
- After antivirus software reports a quarantine
If the error names BS.Player, a codec pack, or another media application, that application is the first repair target.
Find the program that launches
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for the media player or utility associated with the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Record the folder path shown in File Explorer.
For an application that is already running:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click the suspected executable.
- Select Open file location.
- Look for an application folder containing files such as
ac3filter.ax,ac3config.exe, or anAC3 Filterdirectory.
Do not assume the file belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. AC3Filter files are normally kept with the application that installed them.
If the executable is 32-bit, it needs compatible 32-bit filter files. A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit components. Do not combine files from different AC3Filter releases.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the parent application
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely working fix.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the media player, codec pack, or AC3Filter.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application and test the same video or audio file.
If there is no Repair option, reinstall the application:
- In Installed apps or Apps & features, select the application.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s official developer site.
- Install the same architecture required by the application.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test playback.
For a standalone AC3Filter installation, use the official AC3Filter download page and reinstall the complete package, not just one DLL. The currently listed full package is the appropriate choice when the original installation was standalone.
For BS.Player or another bundled media product, reinstall that product instead. It may keep AC3Filter in a private application folder rather than in a system directory.

Check the installation folder afterward
After reinstalling:
- Right-click the application’s shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Confirm that the application directory contains the decoder files it expects.
- Start the application normally.
- Open the media file that previously caused the error.
If the error disappears, the missing component was restored correctly. If it returns immediately, the application may be loading a different copy from another folder, or the installation may be using the wrong architecture.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
An antivirus product or cleanup utility may have removed the file. This is possible, but do not restore a quarantined DLL blindly.

Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
ac3filter_intl.dll. - Expand an entry to see its original location and detection details.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It was inside the expected media application folder.
- The parent application came from a trustworthy installer.
- The quarantine entry clearly identifies the same file.
- You have confirmed that the application genuinely needs it.
If the file was found in a temporary folder, an unexpected user-profile directory, or a Windows system folder, do not restore it. Uninstall the affected application, run a full scan, and reinstall from the vendor.
To run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
A reinstall is safer than copying the quarantined file back because it restores the complete, matching package.
Fix 4: Verify files through the application or launcher
Time needed: 5–30 minutes
If the error comes from a game, media suite, or other program installed through a launcher, use that launcher’s verification or repair function.
The menu names vary, but the process is generally:
- Open the launcher.
- Open its library.
- Select the affected application.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.
- Allow the launcher to replace missing files.
- Restart the application.
Do not download ac3filter_intl.dll separately when the launcher can restore the complete installation. A launcher may also install a private copy that Windows does not expose through the normal Apps settings.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
AC3Filter added x64 support in a later release, but not every copy of ac3filter_intl.dll is 64-bit. The file must match the program that loads it.
To check the application architecture:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select the Details tab.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Choose Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if that column is available.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with a suffix such as (32 bit).
Then reinstall the matching application package. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit installation, or mix ac3filter.ax, ac3filter_intl.dll, and configuration files from different releases.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message or a procedure entry-point error commonly indicates a damaged or mismatched component. Reinstall the complete parent application rather than replacing only the named DLL.

Fix 6: Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is normally not the remedy for ac3filter_intl.dll.
The command is used for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A localization or support DLL does not automatically provide that function. AC3Filter’s DirectShow filter is ac3filter.ax, and its installer handles the required filter registration.

If you run:
regsvr32 ac3filter_intl.dll
and receive an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found, that does not mean the file is missing. It means the file is not designed for that registration operation.
Do not manually register ac3filter_intl.dll. Reinstall the complete application instead.

Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Windows repair commands cannot normally recreate a third-party AC3Filter file. Use them when you also see damaged Windows components, repeated system application failures, or broader corruption.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components, not normally an application-specific AC3Filter file. If the commands report repairs, restart Windows and test the application again. If the same DLL error remains, return to the parent application’s installer.

Windows Features
Do not enable random Windows Features to replace AC3Filter. Media Foundation and legacy media components are separate from this third-party DirectShow package.

Fix 8: Update drivers only for a separate driver error
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
Graphics and audio drivers do not normally restore ac3filter_intl.dll. Update them only if Device Manager shows a separate warning or the application reports a hardware playback problem.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Check the driver status and date.
- Choose Update Driver if an update is required.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall a working audio device merely because this DLL is missing.

Causes of the error
The usual causes are:

The error can occur at application startup, when opening a video, or when selecting an AC3 or DTS stream. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by the application is missing, which is another reason to reinstall the full package instead of replacing one file.

If no installed application still requires AC3Filter:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Search for AC3Filter and obsolete codec packs.
- Uninstall components that are no longer needed.
- Open your current media player’s audio settings.
- Enable its internal decoder, if available.
- Test the affected files.
A maintained media player with an internal AC3/DTS decoder may remove the need for this legacy DirectShow component. Do not keep multiple old codec packs installed unless a specific application requires them.
Frequently asked questions
Is ac3filter_intl.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with AC3Filter and applications that bundle AC3Filter. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I download the missing DLL by itself?
Avoid random DLL download sites. A lone file can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, come from a different release, or fail because another dependency is missing. Use the official AC3Filter package or the original media application installer.
Does installing Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repair are unrelated unless the error explicitly names one of those components. Reinstall the application that owns the file first.
Should I run regsvr32?
No, not for ac3filter_intl.dll. The file is a support DLL, while the DirectShow filter is ac3filter.ax. The installer handles filter setup.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Confirm the executable path, check for another copy of the application, review antivirus quarantine, verify 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility, and inspect Event Viewer under Windows Logs and Application for the failing executable. If no program needs AC3Filter, remove the obsolete filter and use an internal decoder instead.
