When Windows says hpzinw12.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, repair or remove the HP printer package that installed it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
hpzinw12.dll is associated with HP’s Dot4Net Module and Bidi User Mode components. HP documentation connects HPZinw12.dll with the Net Driver HPZ12 service used by certain HP printer drivers, including older Universal Print Driver packages.
The file is commonly found in:
C:WindowsSystem32hpzinw12.dll
However, driver-store and print-spooler locations can also contain HP printer components. The path alone does not prove that a copy is genuine. A file with this name outside an expected HP installation location deserves additional checking.
This is not:
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET component
- A normal protected Windows system file
- A file that should usually be installed with
regsvr32
The exact HP printer model cannot be identified from the filename alone. Several historical HP packages used related HPZ components, and their versions and architectures varied.

Reported Windows loader messages include “The program can’t start because hpzinw12.dll is missing,” “The code execution cannot proceed,” “Error loading hpzinw12.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” These are general loader variants rather than an exhaustive HP-specific error list.
Before changing anything, record the printer model, Windows version, exact error text, full path shown in the message, and what happened immediately beforehand.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer software
This is the safest and most likely solution when the error started during printer setup, after a driver update, or after a Windows upgrade.
Remove the existing HP package
- Disconnect the printer from USB. If it is a network printer, leave it powered off temporarily.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the printer model, HP Smart, HP Universal Printing, or another HP printer package.
- Select the entry and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the uninstall wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Then remove the stale printer object:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
- Open Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows again if Windows requests it.
Install the correct package
Use the exact printer model’s support page on HP’s official website. Select the installed Windows version and the correct architecture when HP presents those choices. HP’s official printer setup portal is also appropriate for supported consumer models.

Install the package as follows:
- Download the current HP driver or printer software.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Accept the installer’s terms.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Allow the setup program to install the driver and supporting services.
- Print a Windows test page.
The repair worked if the HP setup completes without the DLL message, the printer appears under Printers & scanners, and a test page prints. If the same error returns, uninstall the package again and check whether an older HP driver or service remains.

- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for Net Driver HPZ12 and, if present, Pml Driver HPZ12.
- Do not remove either service if an installed HP printer still depends on it.
- If the printer and its HP software are definitely obsolete, close the Services window.
Open Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
sc delete "Net Driver HPZ12"
sc delete "Pml Driver HPZ12"
If Windows reports that a service does not exist, that service has already been removed. If it reports access denied, confirm that the window is elevated and that no HP installer or print job is active.
HP documents removal of the associated file as part of a complete obsolete-driver cleanup:
del C:WindowsSystem32HPZinw12.dll
Run that command only after confirming that the HP printer software is being removed and that no active installation still uses the file. If Windows says the file is in use, restart the computer and do not force deletion while an HP printer remains installed.
The cleanup worked if the startup message stops and the old HP entries disappear from Installed apps, Printers & scanners, and the Services console.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
An antivirus product may quarantine a damaged or suspicious HP component. It may also remove a legitimate file when an old driver behaves unexpectedly.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find the event involving
hpzinw12.dll. - Review the full path and detection name.
- Do not restore the file solely because its filename looks familiar.
- If the path belongs to a currently installed HP printer package and the security product identifies it as a false positive, use the security product’s restore process.
- Then run the HP installer again so the complete package is restored.
If the file is in an unusual user folder, a temporary directory, or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. Reinstalling from HP is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.

Fix 4: Check whether a dependency is actually missing
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that hpzinw12.dll itself is absent. Windows may have located the DLL but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Check the reported location:
- Right-click Start.
- Select File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown in the error.
- If
hpzinw12.dllis present, do not copy another version over it. - Repair or reinstall the HP printer package instead.
A 32-bit printer application can require 32-bit HP components even on 64-bit Windows. Do not move files between System32 and SysWOW64 manually. Those directory names are counterintuitive, and the HP installer must decide where each component belongs.
If the error began after installing an older driver, remove that package and select the driver intended for your exact Windows version. Do not choose a replacement based only on the filename.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other system errors exist
SFC and DISM do not normally restore third-party HP printer files. Use them when hpzinw12.dll errors appeared alongside Windows Update failures, corrupted system applications, repeated system-file warnings, or other Windows instability.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Reinstall the HP driver afterward.

These commands can repair Windows infrastructure that prevents installers from working, but they are not a substitute for reinstalling the HP package.

Fix 6: Use Device Manager to remove a broken printer driver
Use Device Manager when the printer remains listed with a warning icon or Windows keeps reinstalling a damaged driver.
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers if the printer is connected by USB.
- Right-click the affected HP printer.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows shows Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the obsolete HP installation.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current driver from HP.
If the printer does not appear in Device Manager, select View → Show hidden devices and check again. Do not remove unrelated Microsoft print devices.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong here
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 hpzinw12.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing or repairing every DLL. HP’s documented cleanup and repair process treats hpzinw12.dll as part of the printer-driver and service installation, not as a standalone registered library.
If regsvr32 returns an error such as DllRegisterServer in hpzinw12.dll failed, that means registration was not the appropriate repair method. It does not mean that another copy should be downloaded.
Do not download hpzinw12.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an incompatible historical build, or the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. Copying a DLL into System32 can also leave the HP service, printer-driver files, and dependencies mismatched.

When System Restore is appropriate
System Restore is reasonable when:
- The error began immediately after a known driver installation or Windows change
- A restore point exists from before the failure
- The current HP installer is unavailable or cannot complete
Open Start and search for Create a restore point, select System Restore, choose a restore point before the change, and review the affected programs before confirming. Afterward, remove the old HP package and install a current driver if the printer is still required.

FAQ
Is hpzinw12.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with HP printer software and the Net Driver HPZ12 service. It should not be treated like a standard Microsoft system component.
Which HP printer installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the printer model. Multiple historical HP printer packages used related HPZ components.
Is hpzinw12.dll safe?
A filename cannot guarantee safety. Check the full path, the surrounding HP installation, file properties, antivirus result, and whether the printer software was installed from HP.
