Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown has a PlayStation VR mode on PS4, but it does not put the full campaign or online play into VR. The VR content is a separate set of three missions, alongside free flight and an airshow mode. You need PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera to use it.
What is included in Ace Combat 7’s PS4 VR mode?
The VR mode is a dedicated content set, separate from the main campaign and online mode. Bandai Namco describes three VR missions, plus free flight and airshow activities. Its official VR page presents the experience as a pilot sequence that runs from the hangar and sortie preparation through the mission, return, and results.
In the VR hangar, you can view aircraft and enter their cockpits. Bandai Namco says it rebuilt aircraft models and cockpits to show detail in VR. The publisher also lists four VR aircraft on its official VR information.

- Carrier launch and air combat: The first mission starts with a carrier launch and moves into aerial combat.
- Emergency takeoff and base defense: The second centers on an urgent takeoff followed by defending a base.
- Mountain-region battle: The third takes place in mountainous terrain and is described as a more demanding engagement.
These are publisher descriptions of the scenarios, not an independent assessment of their length or difficulty.
Free flight and airshow
Free flight lets you look around while flying. Airshow mode places you as a spectator viewing aircraft maneuvers from an aircraft carrier; Bandai Namco’s Japanese VR page lists 22 maneuvers that players can assemble into a show. These activities are part of the VR content, not a way to play the main campaign in VR.

Does VR include the main Ace Combat 7 campaign?
No. The main story and online mode do not support PlayStation VR; the VR missions are a separate single-player experience. A January 15, 2019 PlayStation Blog preview by Dmitryi Khlynin of Bandai Namco Entertainment America describes the VR story as its own mode, set in 2014—five years before the events of Ace Combat 7—and featuring Mobius 1 and Free Erusea.
That distinction matters if you are buying the game specifically to play its campaign in a headset: the VR mode is an additional, limited set of scenarios rather than a headset option for the full story.

What hardware and controls do you need?
For the PS4 VR features, PlayStation says you need a PlayStation VR headset and PlayStation Camera. Bandai Namco states that other VR devices are unsupported and that the VR mode uses Expert controls only. The requirements apply to the VR features; the game’s other modes are not VR-compatible. - Required for VR: PlayStation VR and PlayStation Camera.
- Control setting: Expert only in VR mode.
- Unsupported: Other VR devices; do not assume PS VR2, PC headsets, or other headsets are officially supported.
- Optional flight stick: A compatibility list includes Ace Combat 7 among PS4 games compatible with the T.Flight HOTAS 4. That does not make the stick a VR requirement. The list is available as a compatibility PDF.
PlayStation warns that VR games may cause motion sickness for some players. That is a general platform caution, not a title-specific comfort rating.

Is Ace Combat 7 available on PS4, and which edition has VR?
The PlayStation Store lists the game for PS4, and the VR mode is a PS4 feature of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Bandai Namco’s Japanese product page lists PS4 editions and gives January 17, 2019 as the original Japanese PS4 release date. Editions and current availability vary by country, so check your local PlayStation Store for the edition and price currently offered.

What to know before choosing the VR mode
- Choose it for three dedicated VR missions, free flight, and airshow—not for a full campaign replay in VR.
- Confirm you have the original PS4 VR hardware and camera; other headsets are not officially supported.
- Expect Expert-only controls in VR. A compatible flight stick is optional, not specified as necessary.
- Use your region’s PlayStation Store to verify which PS4 edition is currently available.
