There is no verified universal score or time cutoff for an S rank in Ace Combat 8. Current guidance describes campaign ranks as mission-specific, with completion time, enemies destroyed, bonus targets, and mission objectives all contributing. To improve your odds, tailor your aircraft and special weapon to the briefing, prioritize valuable targets, and avoid wasting time on detours.
What determines an Ace Combat 8 S rank?
The available mission guidance identifies four factors: completion time, enemy destruction, bonus targets, and mission-specific objectives. Their relative importance can differ between missions, so a score or route that works in one operation may not work in another.
No reviewed official source publishes numeric campaign S-rank cutoffs. PowerPyx’s Ace-difficulty walkthrough also says exact score requirements vary by mission, while a Japanese guide dated October 1, 2026, says it could not verify guaranteed score and time values for all 30 missions. Treat online numbers as provisional unless they are verified for the same mission, difficulty, and game version.
How to plan an S-rank attempt
- Read the briefing. Identify whether the mission focuses on air combat, ground support, naval strikes, or a mix, and note any timed or staged objectives.
- Choose a suitable aircraft and special weapon. Bandai Namco advises adapting your aircraft and weapons to the briefing and combat scenario. Consider target suitability, how quickly you can reach high-value targets, and whether your weapons remain useful across later phases.
- Prioritize valuable targets. During destruction-focused sections, favor worthwhile targets you can reach and destroy efficiently. PowerPyx recommends avoiding long pursuits of isolated, low-value enemies when they cost time.
- Keep the objective moving. In timed or staged sections, avoid unnecessary pursuit. Once you have a reasonable score margin, focus on completing the required objective rather than extending the fight without a clear scoring benefit. This is a strategy, not a universal rank rule.
- Review the result and refine the route. If a run falls behind because of a missed target or a slow engagement, replay the mission and adjust the route or loadout. PowerPyx recommends Free Mission for practice with unlocked custom aircraft.
Adjust your approach to the mission

These are planning principles, not mission-specific cutoff rules. The briefing should determine the actual aircraft, weapon, and target priorities for each operation.

Can you restart from a checkpoint and still earn S?
Do not assume that a checkpoint restart automatically disqualifies an S rank. PowerPyx says a restart does not automatically prevent an S on some missions, but can make the target harder to reach. The available guidance does not establish a universal restart rule for every mission, so judge the run by its score and pace rather than treating a restart as either guaranteed failure or guaranteed safety.
Mission 28: is 156,000 the S-rank requirement?
No confirmed cutoff is established by the available evidence. A player discussing Mission 28 on Ace difficulty suggested aiming for 156,000 destruction score, while explicitly saying they were unsure whether that was the actual requirement. Treat it as an unverified player target, not a guaranteed threshold. The mission’s own objectives, time, bonus targets, and score still matter.

Campaign S ranks are separate from online ranks
Bandai Namco’s game overview discusses mission-clear ranks and rewards in the multiplayer context. That does not establish the requirements for campaign S ranks; use campaign mission guidance when planning a story-mode replay.

Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve released worldwide on October 2, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, following early access. PowerPyx’s guide counts 30 campaign missions. PlayStation.Blog describes more than 30 aircraft across fighter, attack, multi-role, and electronic-warfare roles. Those options support mission-specific planning, but do not imply a single best aircraft or a universal S-rank recipe.
