Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match“The program can’t start because acge15.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
You may also see that acge15.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or is “not designed to run on Windows.” The safest solution is to repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product that needs acge15.dll, rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use this decision list before changing anything:
- AutoCAD stopped launching after an uninstall, cleanup, failed update, or disk problem: repair the owning Autodesk installation.
- The file is present but Windows says “specified module could not be found”: a dependency may be missing. Reinstall AutoCAD first, then investigate the named dependency.
- The problem began after installing an ObjectARX application or Autodesk plug-in: test the plug-in and repair the host AutoCAD release.
- Windows Security shows a recent quarantine event: verify that the file belongs to the correct Autodesk installation before restoring it.
- You installed several old Autodesk products: do not copy
acge15.dllbetween them. AutoCAD 2000, 2000i, and 2002-era libraries are not interchangeable merely because their names look similar. - The application is very old and you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11: the installation may be incompatible with the operating system even after the file is restored.
- You downloaded the DLL from a random website: remove that copy and use the original Autodesk installer or licensed installation media instead.
What acge15.dll does
acge15.dll is the Autodesk AcGe geometry library, used by AutoCAD and related ObjectARX-based software. AcGe provides geometry functionality for points, curves, surfaces, vectors, and related mathematical objects.
The file is associated with older AutoCAD generations, particularly AutoCAD 2000, AutoCAD 2000i, and AutoCAD 2002. Those releases used version-15 API libraries, but that does not mean their DLLs can be mixed safely. AutoCAD 2000 is associated with API generation 15.0, while AutoCAD 2002 is associated with 15.2.

A commonly catalogued copy is a 32-bit file identified as version 21.0.98.0, with a size of approximately 0.95 MB. Treat that information as identification metadata, not as a universal download specification or proof that every installation needs that exact build.
This is not a Windows component and is not the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. It is an application file supplied by Autodesk.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the best first step because it restores missing product files and associated installation information without relying on an unrelated DLL.
For classic Autodesk installers
- Save your work and close AutoCAD.
- Press
Win + R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - In Programs and Features, select the affected Autodesk product.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
- Launch the same AutoCAD product again.
If the repair completes successfully, AutoCAD should recreate acge15.dll in the location expected by that installation. It may be in the application directory or an Autodesk shared directory such as Common FilesAutodesk Shared.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Repair is unavailable or the repair reports an error, return to Uninstall/Change and choose Reinstall, if offered. Reinstalling uses the original product files rather than copying a DLL from another machine.
For newer Autodesk installations
Autodesk products using newer installer systems may not offer a repair option. In that case:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Reinstall the product from your Autodesk account or original licensed media.
For obsolete releases such as AutoCAD 2000, 2000i, or 2002, the current Autodesk Account cannot be assumed to provide the installer. Use the original licensed CD, deployment media, or Autodesk support. Confirm that the media matches the product release and language.
How to tell whether repair worked
Check all of the following:
- AutoCAD opens without the
acge15.dllmessage. - The error does not reappear when opening a drawing.
- Any ObjectARX-dependent command or plug-in also starts normally.
- Windows Security does not immediately quarantine the restored file.
If the same error returns immediately, do not keep copying replacement files. Continue with the matching-version and quarantine checks below.

Older Autodesk products often use similarly named shared libraries. That makes manually replacing acge15.dll particularly risky.
A file from AutoCAD 2000 may not be suitable for AutoCAD 2000i or AutoCAD 2002. Even when Windows accepts the file, the application can fail later with crashes, access violations, or other loader errors.
Use this rule:
| Situation | Safe action |
|---|---|
| AutoCAD 2000 is affected | Restore files from the AutoCAD 2000 installation |
| AutoCAD 2000i is affected | Restore files from the AutoCAD 2000i installation |
| AutoCAD 2002 is affected | Restore files from the AutoCAD 2002 installation |
| An ObjectARX plug-in reports the error | Repair the host AutoCAD release and verify plug-in compatibility |
| Several Autodesk products are installed | Identify the executable producing the error before changing files |
Do not copy acge15.dll from another Autodesk product, another computer, or an unrelated backup unless you have verified that it came from the identical product release, architecture, language, and installation build.
Fix 3: Check the application and Autodesk shared folders
Do not automatically place acge15.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The commonly catalogued file is 32-bit. A 32-bit AutoCAD program needs its 32-bit application dependencies even when Windows itself is 64-bit. System32 and SysWOW64 are Windows-managed locations, not general-purpose storage for application DLLs.
To inspect the installation:
- Right-click the AutoCAD shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the path in Target or choose Open File Location.
- Look for
acge15.dllin the application folder. - Also inspect the Autodesk shared folder used by that release, if the installer placed shared libraries there.
If the file is missing, restore it through repair or reinstall. If it exists, do not assume it is usable. It may be corrupted, incompatible, or dependent on another missing module.
Windows searches for application DLLs according to its DLL search order. The original installation location matters, and placing a file in a system directory can cause another application to load the wrong copy.
Fix 4: Distinguish a missing file from a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that acge15.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found acge15.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies.
First, reinstall or repair the Autodesk product. That is the most reliable way to restore the entire dependency set.
Then read the complete error carefully:
- If it names
acge15.dll, repair the Autodesk installation. - If it names
MSVCP,MSVCR, orVCRUNTIME, investigate the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime required by that application. - If it names an
api-ms-winfile, follow the Microsoft guidance for that specific Windows component. - If it reports that the file is not designed to run on Windows, suspect corruption, wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a missing dependency.
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages include separate x86 and x64 installers. A 32-bit AutoCAD application generally requires the x86 runtime where applicable, even on 64-bit Windows. Installing a runtime does not replace acge15.dll.
Rank #3
Do not install every runtime package at random. Use the dependency named in the error or restore the complete Autodesk installation first.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
A sudden disappearance can result from antivirus quarantine, especially if the file vanished after an update, cleanup, or security scan.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent actions.
- Open any detection associated with the AutoCAD installation.
- Confirm the affected path and product before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of these are true:
- It came from the legitimate Autodesk installation.
- The product and release are known.
- The file path belongs to that installation.
- The installation media or source is trusted.
- You have scanned the system and found no broader malware issue.
Do not disable antivirus merely to install a DLL downloaded from an unknown source. If the file is restored and immediately quarantined again, stop and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly allowing it.
Fix 6: Reinstall the affected ObjectARX plug-in
Sometimes the host AutoCAD installation is intact and an add-on is the actual caller.
Think back to what changed:
- Did the error begin after installing an ObjectARX application?
- Does AutoCAD open until a particular plug-in loads?
- Does the failure occur only with one custom command or workspace?
- Are multiple AutoCAD releases installed?
To isolate the plug-in:
- Start AutoCAD without loading the suspected add-on, if the product allows it.
- Temporarily disable the plug-in through its installer or AutoCAD plug-in manager.
- Start AutoCAD again.
- If the error disappears, repair or reinstall the plug-in from its developer’s trusted installation source.
- Confirm that the plug-in supports the exact AutoCAD release installed.
Do not replace a host AutoCAD DLL with a file supplied for a different ObjectARX development environment. The plug-in and host must use compatible libraries.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components when other programs are also failing
acge15.dll is a third-party Autodesk file, so Windows repair tools normally will not recreate it. Use them when other Windows applications are also damaged, Windows component errors are present, or the Autodesk installer itself cannot run correctly.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Restart Windows after both commands complete, then retry the Autodesk repair.
Success means DISM and SFC complete without an unrepaired corruption result, and the Autodesk installer can run normally. If AutoCAD still reports acge15.dll, repair or reinstall AutoCAD. SFC does not normally restore third-party Autodesk files.
Rank #4
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

Fix 8: Do not update drivers as a primary DLL fix
Graphics drivers are important to AutoCAD, but a display-driver update does not normally recreate acge15.dll. Use Device Manager when you have separate display problems such as blank windows, graphics-driver errors, or rendering failures.
- Press
Win + X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers, or install a driver obtained from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available.
Avoid driver changes when the only symptom is a missing acge15.dll message. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers; its free scan shows findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. A driver update still does not replace the correct Autodesk installation.
Fix 9: Use System Restore for a recent installation change
System Restore can help when AutoCAD worked recently and the failure followed a program installation, update, cleanup operation, or registry change.
- Press
Win + R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if shown.
- Pick a restore point from before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Click Finish to begin the restore.
System Restore can revert system files, registry settings, and installed programs without removing personal files. It is not a substitute for reinstalling AutoCAD, and it may not help if the required product files were never installed correctly.

Use a clean reinstall when repair fails, the installer database is damaged, or repeated attempts leave incompatible Autodesk files behind.
Before uninstalling:
- Record the exact product name and release.
- Back up drawings, templates, custom menus, profiles, and plug-in installers.
- Confirm that you have valid licensed installation media or access to the Autodesk account.
- Note whether other Autodesk products depend on shared components.
Then:
- Uninstall the affected Autodesk product from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove only leftover folders that clearly belong to the uninstalled product.
- Do not delete shared Autodesk folders while another Autodesk product still depends on them.
- Restart again if requested.
- Install the same product release from trusted Autodesk media.
- Apply only updates compatible with that release.
- Test AutoCAD before reinstalling optional ObjectARX applications.
For very old AutoCAD releases, modern Windows compatibility may be the real obstacle. Autodesk did not test or guarantee every legacy product on newer Windows versions. If the exact release cannot run reliably, use a supported environment or an isolated legacy system rather than continuing to replace DLLs.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
acge15.dll is normally an application dependency loaded by AutoCAD. It is not automatically a registerable COM server. Running:
regsvr32 acge15.dll
may produce an error saying that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. It will not restore a missing file, correct a mismatched version, or install its dependencies.
Best Value
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor specifically identifies a DLL as a registerable component and provides registration instructions.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A standalone download may have:
- The wrong AutoCAD-era build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing dependent files
- A damaged or modified binary
- Malware or unwanted software
- No reliable association with your licensed installation
It can also hide the actual cause, such as a failed Autodesk installation, antivirus quarantine, or an incompatible ObjectARX plug-in.
The safe sources are the original Autodesk installer, licensed Autodesk media, an authorized Autodesk account, or a verified identical installation of the same product release. Do not use DLL archive sites as the primary repair method.
Prevention after the repair
Once AutoCAD launches again:
- Keep a copy of the matching licensed installer and product documentation.
- Record which AutoCAD release owns shared Autodesk files.
- Avoid third-party “DLL fixer” utilities.
- Back up custom AutoCAD settings before major Windows or Autodesk changes.
- Install ObjectARX applications only after confirming host-version compatibility.
- Do not manually replace shared DLLs during routine cleanup.
- Keep Windows Security enabled and review Protection History when files disappear.
- Test very old AutoCAD releases in a controlled environment before deploying them across office machines.
FAQ
Is acge15.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Autodesk application library associated with AutoCAD and related ObjectARX software.
Is acge15.dll part of Visual C++?
No. It is the Autodesk AcGe geometry library. A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime may be a separate dependency, but it does not replace acge15.dll.
Can I copy the file into System32?
No. Restore it to the location expected by the owning Autodesk installation through repair or reinstall. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create additional conflicts.
Why does a 32-bit file matter on 64-bit Windows?
A 32-bit application requires compatible 32-bit libraries. Windows being 64-bit does not convert a 64-bit DLL into a valid dependency for a 32-bit AutoCAD release.
Should I run SFC for this error?
Only if Windows itself shows broader corruption or the Autodesk installer cannot run. SFC normally does not recreate third-party Autodesk files.
What if the file exists but AutoCAD still fails?
The file may be corrupted, incompatible, or missing a dependency. Repair the exact Autodesk installation, inspect the full error for another named module, and test recently installed ObjectARX plug-ins.
What information should I give support?
Record the complete error text, the executable name, AutoCAD product and release, Windows version, requested file path, whether the file is present, whether it is 32-bit, recent antivirus actions, and any newly installed Autodesk plug-ins.
