replsync.dll Won’t Load: Trace SQL Server Startup Errors

replsync.dll is a genuine Microsoft SQL Server file, not a standard Windows system DLL. If replsync.dll is missing or cannot load, the correct fix is usually to repair the SQL Server component or remove an old startup reference, not to download a replacement DLL.

Its documented description is SQL Server Replication Synchronization Manager Handler. Microsoft update manifests list it among SQL Server replication binaries in both 32-bit and 64-bit builds.

Quick identification

Item Verified information
File replsync.dll
Description SQL Server Replication Synchronization Manager Handler
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Product Microsoft SQL Server
Component SQL Server Replication
Known example 64-bit, version 2007.100.1600.22, approximately 0.12 MB
Related resource REPLRES.RLL
Windows status Not a protected Windows System32 file

The example version above is not universal. SQL Server releases have different file versions and architectures. Microsoft’s SQL Server 2012 manifests show x86 and x64 replication files, while later SQL Server manifests include other legitimate versions.

What the error usually means

Windows may display one of these messages:

  • replsync.dll - DLL Load Error
  • Cannot load resource dll: REPLRES.RLL
  • The specified module could not be found
  • The program can’t start because replsync.dll is missing from your computer
  • Error loading replsync.dll
  • The code execution cannot proceed because replsync.dll was not found

The message does not always mean that replsync.dll itself is absent. Windows can show “The specified module could not be found” when a dependency or resource file required by the DLL is missing. In the clearest documented startup cases, the immediately missing file was REPLRES.RLL.

  • Less chaos, more calm. The refreshed design of Windows 11 enables you to do what you want effortlessly.
  • Biometric logins. Encrypted authentication. And, of course, advanced antivirus defenses. Everything you need, plus more, to protect you against the latest cyberthreats.
  • Make the most of your screen space with snap layouts, desktops, and seamless redocking.
  • Widgets makes staying up-to-date with the content you love and the news you care about, simple.
  • Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)

The timing of the error is the most useful clue:

  • During Windows startup: a leftover SQL Server startup entry, scheduled task, or service is probably trying to load the file.
  • When using a database application: the SQL Server installation or replication feature may be damaged.
  • When starting one particular program: that application may include or depend on a private SQL Server component.
  • After antivirus activity: Defender or another security product may have quarantined a genuine file.
  • After uninstalling SQL Server: an orphaned reference may still point to the removed component.

Follow the section that matches your situation.

Fix 1: Find out whether SQL Server is still installed

Before replacing anything, establish which program owns the file.

Check Installed apps

  1. Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
  4. Search for:
  5. Microsoft SQL Server
  6. SQL Server Setup
  7. SQL Server Browser
  8. SQL Server Native Client
  9. A program that may use a database
  10. Note the SQL Server version and edition if listed.

If SQL Server is present and the error appears while using a related application, continue with the repair procedure below.

If SQL Server is absent and the popup appears only during startup, skip to Fix 3: Remove a stale startup reference.

Check the file location

If a copy of replsync.dll exists:

  1. Right-click the file.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the General tab and record its location.
  4. Open Digital Signatures, if available.
  5. Select the signature and choose Details.

A file installed under a SQL Server program directory is more consistent with the documented product. A file in a random temporary folder, a user profile directory, or an unexpected application folder deserves further investigation.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The filename alone does not prove that a file is safe. Run a Microsoft Defender scan if the location or signature is suspicious.

Fix 2: Repair SQL Server from its installation media

This is the primary fix when SQL Server is installed but replsync.dll, REPLRES.RLL, or another replication component is damaged.

You need installation media matching the installed SQL Server major version and architecture. Do not use a random DLL archive. Microsoft’s SQL Server downloads page is the appropriate starting point for supported releases.

Run the graphical repair

  1. Obtain the matching SQL Server installation media.
  2. Open the media folder.
  3. Right-click setup.exe.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Wait for SQL Server Setup to load.
  6. Select Maintenance in the left panel.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Choose the affected SQL Server instance.
  9. Complete the validation checks.
  10. Follow the prompts to finish the repair.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Reopen the program that produced the error.

A successful repair should restore the matching SQL Server files and resources together. Test the original application rather than merely checking whether a DLL now exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Setup does not offer the expected instance, you may have the wrong installation media or an incomplete SQL Server installation. Check the installed major version before trying again.

Add the SQL Server Replication feature

Repairing the instance may not be enough if replication was never installed or was removed separately.

  1. Start the matching SQL Server installer.
  2. Choose Installation or the option to modify an existing instance.
  3. Select the existing SQL Server instance.
  4. Continue to Feature Selection.
  5. Select SQL Server Replication.
  6. Continue through the prerequisite and validation pages.
  7. Complete Setup.
  8. Restart SQL Server Agent.
  9. Restart the dependent application.

Microsoft documents replication as an installable SQL Server feature. It is not installed merely because Windows is 64-bit or because another database component is present. See Microsoft’s SQL Server replication installation guidance.

If the installer reports missing Windows Installer cache files, do not copy a DLL manually. Microsoft provides a separate procedure for restoring missing SQL Server installer cache files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Command-line repair

For an administrator-led repair, Microsoft documents this form:

setup.exe /q /ACTION=Repair /INSTANCENAME=<instancename>

For some older installations, the equivalent command is:

setup.exe /ACTION=REPAIR /INDICATEPROGRESS=TRUE

Run the command from the matching SQL Server installation media in an elevated Command Prompt. Replace <instancename> with the actual instance name. If you do not know the instance name, use the graphical Setup process instead.

The repair worked if the application starts normally and the same error does not return. If the error remains, confirm that another program is not producing the popup and inspect SQL Server Setup logs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Remove a stale startup reference

If SQL Server was uninstalled but Windows still reports replsync.dll at every boot, the file may no longer be needed. The remaining problem is likely a startup entry, scheduled task, service, or application shortcut that still points to the old component.

Check Startup apps

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for entries mentioning SQL Server or a program that was recently removed.
  4. Right-click an entry you clearly identify as obsolete.
  5. Select Disable.
  6. Restart Windows.

Disabling an entry stops it from launching, but it does not remove the underlying software. If the error disappears, identify the owning program before deleting anything permanently.

Check Task Scheduler

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Task Scheduler.
  3. Open Task Scheduler.
  4. Select Task Scheduler Library.
  5. Review tasks mentioning SQL Server, replication, or the removed application.
  6. Select a task and inspect its Actions tab.
  7. Look for commands referencing replsync.dll, REPLRES.RLL, or an old SQL Server directory.
  8. If the task is clearly orphaned, right-click it and choose Disable.
  9. Restart Windows and test again.

Do not disable an active task simply because its name contains SQL. Confirm that the related SQL Server instance or application is no longer installed.

Check Services

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
services.msc
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Look for services such as SQL Server, SQL Server Agent, or SQL Server Browser.
  3. Check whether the service belongs to an installation you intentionally removed.
  4. Do not stop or delete a service that belongs to an active database application.

If SQL Server is partially installed, use SQL Server Setup to repair or remove it. Avoid deleting registry keys or service entries by hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Autoruns for a deeper search

Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns can search startup locations that Task Manager does not display.

  1. Download Autoruns from Microsoft.
  2. Extract the archive.
  3. Right-click Autoruns64.exe or Autoruns.exe.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Press Ctrl + F.
  6. Search for replsync.dll.
  7. Repeat the search for REPLRES.RLL.
  8. Search for SQL Server.
  9. Inspect the Image Path or command associated with each result.
  10. Uncheck only an entry that is clearly orphaned.
  11. Restart Windows.

If the reference points to a still-installed application, repair or uninstall that application instead of disabling its startup entry.

Fix 4: Repair the application that shows the error

Some programs install SQL Server components as prerequisites or invoke replication components from their own installation directory. If the error appears only when launching one application, repair that application first.

Use Windows app repair

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If no Repair button exists:

  1. Return to the application’s entry in Installed apps.
  2. Select the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall the application from its original official installer.

Do not assume that installing a generic SQL Server package will fix an application-specific dependency. The application’s installer may require a particular SQL Server branch, architecture, or private resource file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error appears at startup but the application is no longer used, uninstalling the related program is usually cleaner than copying a replacement DLL.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

Both x86 and x64 versions of SQL Server replication files exist. A 32-bit application can require an x86 SQL component even on 64-bit Windows. An x64 file is not automatically a suitable replacement.

Check the following:

  • The Windows architecture.
  • The application architecture.
  • The SQL Server major version.
  • The SQL Server instance that owns the component.
  • The architecture of the installation media.
  • Whether the file belongs to the same SQL Server branch as the installed components.

Do not choose a DLL because it has the newest-looking version number. A mismatched file can cause a bad-image error, missing entry-point error, or another loader failure.

The safe repair is to use matching SQL Server Setup media or the original application installer. Microsoft’s update history documents legitimate Replsync.dll versions across SQL Server branches; it does not establish one universal version for every computer. See the SQL Server update history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check Microsoft Defender and security software

A security product may quarantine a file after an update or scan. Do not restore it solely because Windows displays a missing-file message.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent detections.
  5. Look for replsync.dll, REPLRES.RLL, or the SQL Server installation directory.
  6. Check the detected file’s path and publisher.
  7. If it came from a genuine SQL Server installation, repair SQL Server before restoring an isolated file.
  8. Run a full scan if the path was unexpected.

Microsoft explains the risks of restoring or allowing files in Protection History. A broad exclusion for C:Windows, System32, or all DLL files is not a safe solution.

If a security product repeatedly removes the file, investigate whether the installation source is genuine and submit a suspected false positive to the security vendor when appropriate.

Fix 7: Repair broader Windows component corruption

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally reinstall SQL Server-specific files, so they are not the first fix for an isolated replsync.dll error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use them when several unrelated Windows files are failing, Windows features are damaged, or SQL Server Setup reports wider component corruption.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test the affected application again.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the application after restarting. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, repeat the SQL Server repair rather than copying replsync.dll into a Windows folder.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

A driver is not the normal cause of a missing SQL Server replication DLL. Consider driver work only if the error began after a hardware change, Windows update, or device failure and other symptoms point to a broader system problem.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand categories with warning icons.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the General tab and read the device status.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Select Update Driver.
  9. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  10. Restart Windows if a driver is updated.

For a recently updated device, use Roll Back Driver if the button is available. Do not remove random drivers to resolve a SQL Server file error.

If you are hunting through numerous device manufacturers and driver versions manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported outdated drivers; the driver installation is handled by the full version, and updating a driver will not replace a missing SQL Server component.

Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore can help if the popup began immediately after installing, updating, or removing software.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the problem began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
  5. Review the changes.
  6. Select Next, then Finish.
  7. Allow Windows to restart.

System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It does not replace the need to repair SQL Server if the installation itself is damaged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What not to do

Do not download a single DLL from a random website

Third-party DLL archives can provide:

  • The wrong SQL Server version.
  • The wrong x86 or x64 architecture.
  • A tampered or malicious file.
  • A file that lacks REPLRES.RLL and other dependencies.
  • A binary that conflicts with future SQL Server updates.

Copying the file to C:WindowsSystem32 can also create a misleading global installation that the SQL Server installer does not know about.

Use matching SQL Server installation media, an official Microsoft update package, or the original application installer instead.

Do not run Regsvr32 as a routine fix

Do not use this as a default repair:

regsvr32 replsync.dll

regsvr32.exe is intended for DLLs that expose self-registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft does not identify replsync.dll as a self-registering COM DLL or instruct users to register it.

A failed registration can add a second error without restoring the missing resource, dependency, or SQL Server installation. Repair the owning SQL Server instance instead.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not rename the DLL to suppress the popup

Renaming a file may hide one message while leaving the startup entry or application dependency broken. Find the process attempting to load the file and repair or remove that owner.

Do not install an obsolete SQL Server release only to obtain one file

SQL Server 2008 R2 is legacy software whose extended support ended on July 10, 2019. If an old application truly requires it, verify the Windows compatibility requirements and isolate the installation appropriately. Do not install an old database server as a generic DLL source.

Frequently asked questions

Is replsync.dll malware?

Not by itself. The name and Microsoft description are legitimate, but a malicious file can use a legitimate filename. Check its location, digital signature, installation context, and Defender history.

Is `replsync.dll part of Windows?

No authoritative Microsoft documentation identifies it as a protected Windows system DLL. It is associated with Microsoft SQL Server replication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Windows mention REPLRES.RLL?

REPLRES.RLL is a related resource file. A missing resource or dependency can produce a loader message that appears to blame replsync.dll. Repair the complete SQL Server component rather than replacing one file.

Do I need the file if SQL Server was uninstalled?

Probably not, unless another installed application still depends on SQL Server components. If the error appears during startup, remove the orphaned startup, scheduled-task, or service reference after confirming that SQL Server is no longer needed.

Can SFC restore replsync.dll?

Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while replsync.dll belongs to SQL Server. Use SFC and DISM for broader Windows corruption, and use SQL Server Setup repair for this file.

What if the file exists but still will not load?

Check the file’s architecture, SQL Server branch, permissions, related resource files, dependent modules, and the exact program attempting to load it. The file may be present while another required component is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I collect before asking for support?

Record:

  • The complete error text.
  • Whether it appears at startup or only in one application.
  • The path of any existing replsync.dll.
  • The SQL Server version and instance name.
  • Whether the system is x86 or x64.
  • Whether SQL Server was recently installed, updated, repaired, or removed.
  • Any relevant SQL Server Setup log errors.
  • Recent Defender detections.

That information distinguishes a damaged SQL Server installation from a harmless leftover startup reference and points to the appropriate repair.
