If the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Island Transfer Tool reports “A communication error has occurred,” first confirm that you are using the right kind of transfer and that both consoles meet Nintendo’s requirements. Nintendo does not identify one universal cause for this generic message, so no single workaround can be promised. Work through the official checks below before trying anecdotal fixes.
First, identify which transfer you are doing
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has separate processes for moving a whole island, moving an individual resident, and transferring Switch system data. The steps are not interchangeable.
- Whole-island transfer: Uses the Island Transfer Tool on both the source and target consoles. The island is moved, not copied; after completion, it is no longer available to visit on the source system. Nintendo’s island transfer guide explains the process and its consequences.
- Individual resident transfer: Uses a separate process and requires both systems, local wireless, and a copy of the game on each. The resident representative cannot be transferred individually. See Nintendo’s resident-move instructions.
- Switch system transfer to Switch 2: This is distinct from an in-progress Island Transfer Tool move. If local communication was used for the system transfer, residents may need to be linked to user accounts afterward; Nintendo addresses that follow-up under error MT-10003 at its support page.
If the error occurs while one console is looking for the other, or when the transfer is starting, note which screen displays it and whether an error code appears. Those details help distinguish a detection problem from a post-transfer account-linking issue, but the wording alone does not establish the cause.
Check Nintendo’s whole-island transfer requirements
For a complete island move, compare your setup with Nintendo’s current checklist before changing settings or deleting data.

- Have both consoles available. The source system holds the island being moved; the target is where it will go.
- Enable communication on both. Airplane Mode must be off, or Wi-Fi must be enabled, on both systems. Follow the on-screen prompts to designate each console as Source or Target.
- Update and open the required software as directed. Use the Island Transfer Tool on each console and follow the game and tool prompts through the detection step.
- Check for existing Animal Crossing: New Horizons save data on the target. Nintendo requires that save data on the target be deleted before a whole-island transfer can complete. This is destructive: verify whose save it is and whether it needs to be kept before removing it.
- Confirm which console is not advancing. Record whether the source fails to appear on the target, or the communication error appears after detection or when transfer begins. This is useful information if you need support; it is not, by itself, proof of a particular fault.
Do not start a whole-island move expecting to keep a playable copy on both systems. Nintendo says the island “will no longer be available to visit on the source system after transferring.”
If the consoles cannot find or communicate with each other
When the source and target do not connect, use Nintendo’s general Switch local-communication troubleshooting. It is guidance for local communication problems, not a diagnosis of every Island Transfer Tool message.

If the exact message is “Unable to Find the Source Console,” Nintendo separately recommends checking for wireless interference and trying a different access point. See Nintendo’s instructions for that message. These steps are relevant to source-console detection, but they do not prove that every generic communication error has a network cause.
If those Nintendo steps do not resolve a local-communication failure, contact Nintendo Support. Provide the transfer type, the screen where it stops, the exact message or error code, and which console displays it.

Should you try a hotspot?
A HackerNoon article suggests trying a mobile hotspot when a network may be interfering with detection: its discussion of the communication error is non-Nintendo advice. Treat a hotspot as an optional experiment, not an official fix or a confirmed explanation for the error. Nintendo’s published guidance does not establish that it will resolve every case.

An island backup or restoration is a separate workflow from a direct transfer between two consoles. Do not treat restoring a backup as an equivalent workaround for a failed direct move. If the source console is unavailable and you have an enabled island backup, consult Nintendo’s applicable backup and recovery instructions for that situation rather than following the two-console transfer steps.
