If acpal.dll is missing, Windows cannot start an Autodesk application or one of its DWG components. The safest fix is to identify the Autodesk product named in the error, then repair or reinstall that product and its shared Autodesk components.

The exact acpal.dll errors

You may see:

“The code execution cannot proceed because AcPal.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.”

Autodesk documents this message when launching AutoCAD-based software, including AutoCAD LT. A related entry may also appear in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > Application.

Other possible messages include:

  • AcPal.dll could not be loaded
  • A procedure entry point could not be located in ...RealDWG Shared...AcPal.dll
  • A later error naming acut.dll, acdb24.dll, acge24.dll, or anav.dll

The wording matters. A “not found” message usually indicates a missing, damaged, quarantined, or incorrectly installed Autodesk file. An entry-point message more strongly suggests that the file and the application are incompatible, or that Windows itself is not supported by that Autodesk component.

What acpal.dll belongs to

acpal.dll is an Autodesk application DLL associated with AutoCAD-based products and Autodesk RealDWG Shared. It is not a Windows system DLL and should not normally be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The file may be used by:

  • AutoCAD
  • AutoCAD LT
  • Civil 3D
  • Navisworks
  • Revit
  • Desktop Connector
  • Other Autodesk products that use native DWG support

RealDWG Shared can be installed as a shared component and may be updated separately from the main Autodesk application. Common Autodesk paths include:

C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk SharedRealDWG Shared 2025
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk SharedRealDWG Shared 2026

The exact folder depends on the product and installation. Do not treat catalogue listings of file sizes, versions, or bitness as universal Autodesk specifications. The correct file is the one installed by the matching Autodesk product.

First, identify the failing Autodesk product

Before changing anything, record the full error and determine which executable produced it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the error window.
  2. Try launching the Autodesk application again.
  3. Note whether the title names AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Navisworks, Revit, Civil 3D, Desktop Connector, or another product.
  4. If several Autodesk applications are installed, test them separately.
  5. Right-click the application shortcut and select Properties.
  6. On the Shortcut tab, note the Target executable.
  7. Check whether the error names a path such as RealDWG Shared 2025.

You can also check Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
  3. Expand Windows Logs.
  4. Select Application.
  5. Look for an error recorded at the time the Autodesk program failed.
  6. Record the application name, faulting module, and full path.

If the path points to RealDWG Shared, repairing only AutoCAD may not correct the problem. Another Autodesk product may own or share the failing component.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Autodesk first

A damaged or incomplete Autodesk installation is the most likely cause. This can follow an interrupted update, a failed installation, disk cleanup, a Windows upgrade, or removal of another Autodesk product.

Autodesk products using the Classic Installer

For Autodesk products from 2021 and earlier, try repair first:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Select Programs > Uninstall a program if necessary.
  4. Select the affected Autodesk product.
  5. Choose Uninstall/Change.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Follow the prompts and restart Windows.
  8. Launch the application again.

Repair restores missing product files. If repair does not work, repeat the process and choose Reinstall. Reinstall restores the original installation files and registry entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Autodesk products using the newer installer

For products from 2022 onward, Autodesk says the old repair option may not be available:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected Autodesk product.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Sign in to your Autodesk Account or use the official Autodesk installer.
  8. Download and install the same product and release.
  9. Restart Windows again and test the application.

Use Autodesk’s repair and reinstall guidance and its current uninstall and reinstall procedure when the menu names differ.

If multiple Autodesk programs use DWG files, update or reinstall the relevant RealDWG Shared component as well. Autodesk explains that RealDWG Shared updates can be separate from product updates in its RealDWG Shared documentation.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair or reinstall succeeded if:

  • The application opens without the AcPal.dll message.
  • A DWG file opens normally in products such as Navisworks or Revit.
  • The next launch does not produce a new Autodesk DLL error.
  • Event Viewer no longer records the same application failure.

If the next message names acut.dll, acdb24.dll, acge24.dll, or anav.dll, treat that as evidence of a broader Autodesk installation or RealDWG problem. Do not keep replacing only acpal.dll.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can quarantine an Autodesk DLL after an update or installation.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
  4. Look for an action involving AcPal.dll or the Autodesk installation folder.
  5. Check the detection details and file location.
  6. Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from the legitimate Autodesk installation and the detection is a false positive.

Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the file is missing, reinstalling Autodesk is usually safer than restoring an uncertain copy because the installer can replace the file and its related dependencies together.

After reinstalling, run a scan and test the application again. If the file is immediately quarantined again, leave it isolated and contact Autodesk support or your security vendor rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Fix 3: Install pending Windows and Autodesk updates

Missing updates can contribute to Autodesk launch failures and compatibility problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Windows updates

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
  6. Check for updates again until none remain.
  7. Retry the Autodesk repair or installation.

Microsoft provides additional Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

Check Autodesk updates

Open the Autodesk application manager, Autodesk Account, or the official Autodesk installer and look for updates that apply to:

  • The affected Autodesk product
  • RealDWG Shared
  • Autodesk shared components

If an update fails repeatedly, uninstall and reinstall the affected Autodesk product rather than repeatedly launching the failed updater.

Fix 4: Check for a RealDWG or Windows compatibility problem

A missing-file dialog is different from an entry-point error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Autodesk documents this example:

“The procedure entry point IsWow64Process2 could not be located in the dynamic link library …RealDWG Shared 2025AcPal.dll.”

That case involved Navisworks on Windows Server. Autodesk’s solution was to run Navisworks on a supported Windows 10 or Windows 11 environment.

If your message names IsWow64Process2, RealDWG Shared, or an unsupported Windows Server installation:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. Record the Windows edition and build.
  4. Confirm whether the computer is running Windows 10, Windows 11, or Windows Server.
  5. Check the Autodesk system requirements for the exact product release.
  6. Do not replace AcPal.dll with a file from another release.
  7. Move the workload to a supported Windows environment if the Autodesk product does not support the current server version.
  8. Reinstall the compatible Autodesk product and RealDWG Shared component.

See Autodesk’s Navisworks and RealDWG Shared case for the documented entry-point scenario.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail

Use Windows repair commands when several unrelated applications report DLL failures, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or the Autodesk installer behaves abnormally. These commands do not repair an Autodesk-owned acpal.dll.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Retry the Autodesk repair or reinstall.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. See Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions.

Running these commands repeatedly without knowing what changed is frustrating. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair features require the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for a missing Autodesk DLL.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired files, restart and test Autodesk. If it reports that it could not repair some files, complete the Autodesk reinstall and investigate Windows component health separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check architecture and dependencies

Do not assume that every acpal.dll has the same architecture. Autodesk products and shared components must match the application and supported operating system.

Check the following:

  • Whether the failing application is 32-bit or 64-bit
  • Whether the installed RealDWG Shared component belongs to the same product generation
  • Whether a manually copied DLL came from another release
  • Whether the error names a Microsoft runtime DLL

If the error names mfc140u.dll, vcruntime140.dll, or msvcp140.dll, install the appropriate official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package. Microsoft lists the current packages as:

VC_redist.x64.exe
VC_redist.x86.exe

The package architecture must match the application. Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Do not install VC++ automatically just because acpal.dll is missing. acpal.dll is an Autodesk file, not a Microsoft runtime file.

Fix 7: Update graphics or device drivers only when relevant

A graphics driver normally does not restore a missing Autodesk DLL. Consider driver troubleshooting only when the application opens but crashes during display initialization, or when Device Manager reports a device problem after a Windows update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To inspect drivers:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics device.
  5. Choose Properties and inspect the Device status.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Select Update Driver.
  8. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  9. Restart Windows and test Autodesk.

If the issue began immediately after a driver update, use Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise download the matching driver from the computer or graphics-device manufacturer.

Finding the correct driver manually can mean checking hardware IDs, Windows builds, and several vendor packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues; installing drivers through its full version is optional. A driver update will not replace the Autodesk installation that owns acpal.dll.

What not to do

Do not download acpal.dll from a random DLL site

A same-named file may contain malware, the wrong Autodesk release, the wrong architecture, or incompatible dependencies. It may also leave the damaged installation and registry state untouched.

Use the official Autodesk product installer or Autodesk Account. Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or an unrelated application folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Copying from another computer is also unreliable. Even if the other computer launches Autodesk successfully, its file may belong to a different product, update, architecture, or RealDWG release.

Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no Autodesk instruction establishing that acpal.dll should be registered this way.

Running this command is therefore not a standard repair:

regsvr32 AcPal.dll

It can produce a registration error without addressing the missing or incompatible Autodesk installation. Microsoft explains the relevant Regsvr32 troubleshooting behavior.

If acpal.dll is still failing after reinstall

Collect these details before escalating:

  1. The exact error text.
  2. The Autodesk executable that fails.
  3. The full path shown for AcPal.dll.
  4. The Autodesk product and release.
  5. The Windows edition and build from winver.
  6. Whether the file appears in Windows Security Protection History.
  7. Any follow-up DLL named by the error.
  8. The related Event Viewer entry.
  9. Whether the failure occurs for a new Windows user profile.
  10. Whether the machine runs an unsupported Windows Server edition.

A clean reinstall that still produces an entry-point error usually points to an unsupported operating system, a RealDWG version conflict, a blocked installation, or an environment-level compatibility issue rather than a single missing file.

FAQ

Is acpal.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with Autodesk applications and RealDWG Shared. It should not be downloaded as a Windows component or copied into System32.

Which program installed acpal.dll?

The exact owner depends on the failing Autodesk installation. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are documented examples, while RealDWG Shared may support Navisworks, Revit, and other Autodesk products.

Should I install Visual C++ to fix acpal.dll?

Only if the error also names a missing Microsoft runtime DLL or Autodesk support identifies a runtime dependency problem. Visual C++ is not the primary fix for a missing acpal.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I restore acpal.dll from another PC?

It is not a reliable general fix. The other file may have a different version, architecture, or dependency set. Repair or reinstall the matching Autodesk product instead.

What if the error names acdb24.dll or acge24.dll next?

That indicates a wider Autodesk or RealDWG installation problem. Repair or reinstall the affected product and shared component rather than replacing each DLL separately.

Does SFC repair acpal.dll?

No. SFC checks protected Windows system files. It can help with Windows corruption that interferes with installation, but Autodesk must restore its own application DLL.
