Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which program shows the error: a media player, Ulead application, scanner utility, game, or laboratory instrument program.
- When it appears: at startup, while opening an MPEG file, when browsing a video folder, or after uninstalling another application.
- The exact dialog title: older MPEG-related errors may say MPL Loader.
- Whether another DLL follows:
mplapx.dllormplvpx.dllmay be reported immediately afterward. - The application architecture:
cpuinf32.dllis a 32-bit library, so it is normally used by a 32-bit application, even on 64-bit Windows. - Whether antivirus recently quarantined a file.
- Whether the original application is still installed.
The safest repair is usually to repair or reinstall the program that installed cpuinf32.dll. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL into System32.
What cpuinf32.dll is
cpuinf32.dll is an identifiable 32-bit Intel CPU identification library. Older software used it to read processor identity, processor features, and speed information.
It is not a normal Windows component and should not be assumed to belong to Windows Media Player, Windows 10, or Windows 11. Older third-party programs redistributed it, including MPEG and video codec packages, Ulead software, PaperPort or ScanSoft software, some games, and certain laboratory-instrument applications.
There is no single current application that owns every copy of this filename. The correct repair depends on the application named in the error.

Public file inventories commonly identify the library as an x86 file. A commonly reported file size exists in old inventories, but redistributed builds can differ, so size alone is not a reliable way to validate a copy.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that needs it
This is the quickest and most reliable fix.
If the application is still installed
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Start the application again and repeat the action that produced the error.
If there is no Repair button:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Complete the installer repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the application using its original installer, supplied media, or the current installer provided by the software vendor. Restart before reinstalling if the program was an old codec, DVD application, scanner package, or media suite.
A successful repair normally means the program opens without the DLL dialog and the original operation works again. If the same dialog returns, note whether the missing file is now a different DLL. That often confirms that the whole codec or application package is incomplete rather than proving that cpuinf32.dll alone is defective.
If the problem began after removing another program
An older codec or media component may have been removed while another application still expects it.
Check both locations:
- Settings → Apps → Installed apps
- Control Panel → Programs and Features
Look for recently removed or partially removed video, DVD, Ulead, scanner, or PaperPort-related software. If the affected application still needs that component, reinstall the original package. If the old program is no longer needed and the error appears only at startup, remove the abandoned startup entry or repair the remaining application instead of copying the DLL globally.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed or quarantined a legitimate legacy library, but do not assume every detection is a false positive.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any entry associated with
cpuinf32.dllor the affected application. - Confirm the file’s original path and the application that supplied it.
- Restore or allow it only if you can verify its origin and relationship to the installed program.
Microsoft warns that allowing an unknown quarantined file can expose the device. If the file came from an unofficial DLL site, leave it quarantined and remove that download. Obtain a clean copy through the parent application’s official installer or vendor support package.
After restoring a verified file, launch the application again. If Windows Security quarantines it immediately, stop restoring it manually and run a full scan. The detection may indicate modification, malware, or an untrusted source.

Fix 3: Reinstall the bundled codec or media component
A historic pattern for this error involves MPL Loader while opening MPEG files, selecting MPEG files in Explorer, or browsing folders containing video. Older media players, Ulead software, FinePixViewer, and related codec packages may have loaded cpuinf32.dll as part of their MPEG processing.
Use the application’s own installer rather than installing a standalone DLL:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for media players, MPEG codecs, DVD software, Ulead software, or camera software.
- Select the relevant program and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall.
- If repairing fails, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program from its original media or the developer’s official support source.
- If the installer offers optional MPEG, DVD, or codec components, select the components required by the application.
- Test by opening the same MPEG file or browsing the same folder.
If Windows Explorer crashes or shows the message only when a video folder is opened, the failure may be caused by a stale codec or shell component. Repair or remove the application that installed that codec. Do not place cpuinf32.dll in System32 to work around an orphaned codec registration.
Fix 4: Restore an exact vendor hardware package
Some scientific workstations and instrument applications include this library with their own image-processing or acquisition software. BD documentation, for example, lists Cpuinf32.dll among files used in certain flow-cytometer workstation environments.
If the error appears on a managed laboratory workstation:
- Record the instrument model and application name.
- Do not replace the file manually.
- Contact the instrument vendor or your organization’s system administrator.
- Use the supplied workstation media or the vendor’s approved repair package.
- Follow the vendor’s validation procedure after reinstalling.
- Confirm that the instrument software can connect to the hardware and open its normal workspace.
Manual changes can invalidate a controlled instrument configuration even when the replacement file appears to fix the startup message.
Fix 5: Check the 32-bit location and dependencies
A 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows does not automatically need a copy in C:WindowsSystem32. Windows uses separate handling for 32-bit and 64-bit applications, and the application directory is searched before system directories.
If you have a verified copy from the original installer:

- MICROSOFT WINDOWS 11 PRO (INGLES) FPP 64-BIT ENG INTL USB FLASH DRIVE
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and choose Open File Location.
- Check whether
cpuinf32.dllis beside the application executable or in a vendor-prescribed subfolder. - Use the original installer’s repair function to restore it there.
Do not copy an x86 DLL into a 64-bit application directory. Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64 merely because the error names a DLL.
If the file is already beside the executable and the error persists, “module not found” may refer to a dependency required by cpuinf32.dll. Repair the complete parent package and check its installation log or vendor diagnostics. A visible cpuinf32.dll does not prove that all required supporting files are present.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the application’s drivers
A driver update is relevant only when the error belongs to a scanner, camera, capture device, laboratory instrument, or other hardware application. It is not a substitute for repairing a media codec or unrelated game.
Use Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the vendor application.
If the device disappeared after an update:
- In Device Manager, right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the complete driver and application package supplied by the hardware vendor.
- Test the hardware application.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through many driver versions; its free scan shows what it identifies, while driver installation is done by the full version. For a laboratory or vendor-controlled device, the vendor’s approved package remains the definitive source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 7: Install runtimes only when the application identifies one
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET as a first response to cpuinf32.dll. There is no established connection between this particular library and those Microsoft runtimes.
If the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime, install the architecture requested by that application. A 32-bit program generally needs the x86 runtime, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Installing a runtime does not install cpuinf32.dll.
Windows Features are also not a direct source for this DLL. You can check them only when the affected application specifically requires an optional Windows component:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs, then Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the feature named by the application’s documentation.
- Enable it only if required.
- Select OK, restart if prompted, and test again.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components when broader corruption exists
Because cpuinf32.dll is a third-party library rather than an established Windows-protected file, System File Checker is not expected to recreate it. Use these commands when Windows itself is unstable or several unrelated Windows components are failing.

System Restore does not replace good application backups or vendor installers, so use it only when the timing is clear.
Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. cpuinf32.dll is documented as a CPU-information API library, not as a COM server.
Running:
regsvr32 cpuinf32.dll
is therefore not a normal repair. If Windows reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that is evidence that registration is irrelevant. It does not mean you need another downloaded copy.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid DLL download websites and forum attachments. A downloaded file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different redistributed build, or lack dependencies. Even a clean-looking copy may hide the underlying damaged installation and create future version conflicts.
Use, in order:
- The original application installer or repair option.
- The application developer’s official installer or support package.
- An approved hardware or instrument vendor package.
- Your organization’s software deployment system.
A controlled manual copy is appropriate only when the exact file comes from one of those trusted sources and is placed beside the matching application executable.

FAQ
Is cpuinf32.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Intel-origin CPU identification library redistributed by older third-party applications. It should not be treated as a standard Windows 10 or Windows 11 component.
Is it related to Windows Media Player?
Not directly. Older MPEG codecs and media software could request it while Windows Media Player or Explorer handled an MPEG file. Repair the codec or parent media application.
Recommended Free Tools
Is there a 64-bit version?
The known public identity of this library is 32-bit x86. Do not use an arbitrary file with a different architecture. Repair the 32-bit application package that requires it.
Why does the error mention mplapx.dll or mplvpx.dll next?
Those names can appear in the same older MPEG or MPL Loader failure chain. Repair the complete codec or media package rather than replacing each DLL separately.
Will Visual C++ or DirectX fix it?
Not by themselves. Install a runtime only if the application separately identifies that runtime as missing. They do not install cpuinf32.dll.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The named file may depend on another missing library, or it may be damaged or incompatible. Repair the owning application and consult its installation log or vendor diagnostics.
What if the error appears after every reboot?
The original program may have been removed while leaving a startup entry or codec registration behind. Identify the abandoned application in Installed apps or Programs and Features, then repair or uninstall the remaining owner rather than adding a global DLL copy.
