1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesacproxy.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows system file, and the safest fix is to repair Windows rather than download a replacement DLL. If Windows or an application says that acproxy.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, use Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker in that order.
What this file actually does
The file is named Autochk Proxy DLL and is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is published by Microsoft Corporation and normally resides at:

%WINDIR%SysWOW64
Do not interpret SysWOW64 as meaning that it contains 64-bit files. Windows uses file-system redirection so that 32-bit programs can access their corresponding system components. The exact copy present depends on the Windows edition, architecture, and build.

Windows associates this DLL with the scheduled task:
MicrosoftWindowsAutochkProxy
That task can invoke rundll32.exe with the exported function PerformAutochkOperations:
%windir%System32rundll32.exe /d acproxy.dll,PerformAutochkOperations
Historical Windows documentation describes the task as collecting Autochk or System Quality Metrics data when the relevant telemetry setting is enabled. The word “Proxy” in the filename does not mean that the DLL manages your proxy server.
acproxy.dll is unrelated to WinHTTP AutoProxy support, which is a separate Windows networking feature. Changing proxy settings, resetting WinHTTP, or reinstalling a web browser normally will not restore this system DLL.
Windows builds do not all use one universal version, size, or hash. Do not compare the file with a copy from another computer or assume that an older Windows version is interchangeable with Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Common symptoms and likely causes
| Symptom | More likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because acproxy.dll is missing from your computer” | Windows file deletion or corruption, or a damaged application | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| “This application failed to start because acproxy.dll was not found” | A Windows component or application dependency problem | Check the file path and repair Windows |
| “Error loading acproxy.dll. The specified module could not be found” | The DLL or one of its dependencies may be unavailable | Run DISM and SFC; do not assume the named file alone is missing |
| “acproxy.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” | Wrong architecture, damaged file, or invalid replacement | Remove unofficial copies and repair Windows |
| The message appeared after an antivirus detection | Quarantine or unauthorized replacement | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| Only one third-party program reports the error | Damaged application installation or an inaccurate dependency message | Repair, verify, or reinstall that application |
| The message began after an update | Interrupted servicing or a damaged component store | Run DISM and SFC, then consider update recovery |
| Windows reports the error during startup or Task Scheduler activity | A Windows task or system component is affected | Check the system copy and repair Windows |
The wording alone does not prove that a particular program legitimately owns or requires acproxy.dll. “Specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency loaded by the DLL is missing.
Before repairing: identify what is failing
First note exactly when the message appears:
- During Windows startup or sign-in
- When opening Task Scheduler
- When launching one particular application
- After a Windows update
- After a cleanup utility or antivirus action
- After a failed system repair
- After a disk, driver, or malware incident
This distinction matters. A system-wide problem should be repaired through Windows servicing. If only one application fails and Windows itself works normally, that application may need its own repair or reinstall.

Also record the full error text. “Missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” and “not designed to run on Windows” point to different possibilities, even though they can appear similar.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows Update is the safest first repair because Microsoft distributes system files through Windows servicing rather than as standalone DLL downloads.
Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again.
- Test the program or action that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Check for updates again and retest the affected program.
If the update process fails, note the error code. Do not repeatedly download acproxy.dll from another source. A failed update may indicate that the component store or servicing stack also needs repair.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this procedure when the file is absent from a Windows directory, Windows reports multiple component errors, or the problem remains after updating.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management, or DISM, before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected system files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when DISM completes.
The command repairs the currently running Windows installation. It does not download an isolated acproxy.dll file.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Enter:
sfc /scannow
- Press Enter.
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application or Windows task again.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC repaired files, restarting before testing is important.

If the result is unchanged, inspect the CBS log or proceed to a matching Windows repair source. Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance explains the supported sequence and results.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use a Windows installation source that closely matches the installed edition, language, architecture, and build. Microsoft documents the required /Source approach in its guide to repairing a Windows image. Do not use a random image or a copy of the DLL from another computer.
Manually checking component corruption and repeating DISM and SFC can be time-consuming, especially when Windows has several damaged files. Outbyte PC Repair can perform a free scan that shows what it finds; repairs are handled by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
Fix 3: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a system file after a detection, including after a false positive or an unauthorized file replacement.

Check Protection history in Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Security. - Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection related to
acproxy.dll. - Note the detected file path, threat name, and action taken.
Restore a quarantined file only when all of the following are true:
- The path is the expected Windows directory, such as
%WINDIR%System32or the appropriate system location. - The file is digitally signed by Microsoft Corporation.
- The detection is understood and has been investigated.
- A current Microsoft Defender scan does not identify an active threat.
Do not restore an unsigned file merely because its name is acproxy.dll. Malware can use the name of a legitimate Windows component.
If you suspect malware, update Microsoft Defender and run a full scan. If the file was replaced, the safer sequence is to remove the threat and then run DISM and SFC. A clean scan does not by itself prove that an existing DLL is authentic.
Fix 4: Verify the path and Microsoft signature
A file named acproxy.dll outside the Windows system directories deserves scrutiny. This is particularly true if it appears in a downloads folder, temporary directory, game folder, user profile, or an unrelated application directory.

acproxy.dll. - On a 64-bit installation, also check the relevant
C:WindowsSysWOW64location if the error comes from a 32-bit program.
The Windows directory may have a different drive letter or name if Windows was installed elsewhere. %WINDIR% refers to the actual Windows folder.
Check the digital signature
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature entry.
- Select Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and identifies Microsoft Corporation as the signer.
The absence of a signature, an invalid signature, or a publisher that is not Microsoft is a reason not to use that file. Do not replace it manually. Run a security scan and repair Windows through DISM and SFC.
File metadata varies by Windows build. A different version number or file size is not automatically evidence of malware, and a matching filename is not proof of authenticity.
Fix 5: Repair the affected application
If Windows starts normally and only one program reports acproxy.dll, the application installation may be damaged or the program may be reporting a dependency failure inaccurately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try the application’s own repair options before changing Windows files.
Repair a Microsoft Store application
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Apps > Installed apps. In Windows 10, select Apps > Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Open Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset where available, understanding that this can remove application data.
- If necessary, uninstall and reinstall it from its official source.
Repair a traditional desktop application
- Open Start.
- Type Control Panel and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Change, Repair, or a similar option.
- Complete the installer’s repair process.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Game launchers and other specialized applications may provide Verify files, Scan and repair, or Repair installation. Use that option inside the official launcher. Do not place a downloaded DLL in the program folder.
If reinstalling the application fixes the error, the original problem was likely its installation, launcher, permissions, or profile. If the program continues to report acproxy.dll while Windows passes its integrity checks, contact the application vendor or use its official installer rather than repeatedly repairing the system DLL.
Fix 6: Check drivers only when the timing points to a driver problem
A generic driver update is not the primary repair for a missing Windows DLL. Consider this step when the error began immediately after installing, removing, or updating a driver, or when Device Manager shows a related hardware problem.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the hardware involved.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the suspected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Note the driver provider and current status.
- Use Update Driver only when a suitable official driver is available.
- If the issue began after a recent update, select Roll Back Driver when that option is available.
- Restart Windows and retest.
Do not replace acproxy.dll with a driver package. Drivers and Windows system DLLs are separate components.
Finding the correct driver manually can involve identifying the exact hardware, architecture, and Windows version instead of installing a generic package. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing outdated drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version, and the utility is optional.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore can help when the error appeared after an update, cleanup tool, driver installation, or failed repair and a suitable restore point exists.
System Restore changes system files, drivers, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files.
Start System Restore
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the original action.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore.
System Restore may be unavailable if System Protection was disabled or Windows has no restore point. If the issue began immediately after a Windows update, Windows also provides recovery options under Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, where the affected update can be removed.
Use caution when removing an update, particularly on a managed or business computer. If the problem is severe, Microsoft’s Windows recovery options outline the available paths.

Fix 8: Reinstall the current Windows version without removing your files
Windows 11 includes a less disruptive repair option that reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Restart and test
acproxy.dllagain.
The wording or availability can vary by Windows configuration. If the option is not present, use DISM with a matching installation source or perform a Windows repair installation using official Microsoft installation media.
A full recovery or clean installation should be reserved for severe corruption, suspected compromise that cannot be removed, or a system that remains unstable after supported repairs. Back up personal files before using recovery or installation media.
Why regsvr32 acproxy.dll is not the right fix
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
The documented export associated with acproxy.dll is PerformAutochkOperations, not DllRegisterServer. Running:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →regsvr32 acproxy.dll
does not restore a missing file and may produce a message stating that DllRegisterServer could not be found or that registration failed.
Use DISM and SFC for a protected Windows system file. Do not attempt to register acproxy.dll just because an error page recommends it.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
There is no official standalone Microsoft acproxy.dll redistributable, Visual C++ package, DirectX installer, or .NET package that users should download to repair this file.
Downloading a DLL from a random repository can introduce several problems:
- The file may contain malware or an unauthorized modification.
- It may belong to a different Windows build.
- It may use the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- It may have the wrong language or dependency set.
- Copying it into
System32can create additional integrity problems. - The real cause may be a missing dependency, component-store corruption, or a damaged application.
- Windows servicing may replace or reject the file later.
The supported sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, a matching Windows installation source, System Restore, Windows recovery, or an official repair or reinstall process for the affected application.
Frequently asked questions
Is acproxy.dll malware?
No. The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component named Autochk Proxy DLL. A file with that name is not automatically safe, however. Check its location and Microsoft digital signature, then use Defender and Windows servicing if anything is suspicious.
Is acproxy.dll related to my proxy-server settings?
Usually no. The name refers to the Autochk Proxy DLL and its Windows task. It is not the same as WinHTTP AutoProxy support. Changing browser or network proxy settings will not normally repair a missing system file.
Where should acproxy.dll be?
The typical location is %WINDIR%System32. On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit components use Windows’ separate SysWOW64 handling. Do not manually move or swap copies between those directories.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I copy the file from another computer?
No. Windows builds, architectures, languages, and servicing states differ. Repair the installed Windows image instead.
Why does an application mention a Windows DLL?
The application may be damaged, may have a missing dependency, or may be reporting a loader failure using the first DLL it could not load. The message does not prove that the application should contain or distribute acproxy.dll.
What if DISM and SFC complete successfully but the error remains?
Restart first and retest. If only one program fails, repair or reinstall that program and use its file-verification feature. If Windows startup or multiple components remain affected, use System Restore, Windows 11’s repair reinstall, a matching installation source, or Windows recovery.
Can Windows Features restore this file?
Optional Windows Features are not the normal source for acproxy.dll. Enabling or disabling unrelated features is unlikely to repair it. Use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Do I need to register the DLL?
No. regsvr32 is not the correct repair for this file because the known operation is PerformAutochkOperations, not the registration entry point used by regsvr32.
When should I suspect disk corruption?
Suspect it when SFC repeatedly reports corruption, repairs do not persist after restarting, Windows logs repeated disk errors, or other files become damaged. Back up important files and investigate storage health before continuing with repeated repairs.
