1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“actctoolsres.dll is missing from your computer” means an Autodesk application cannot load a required resource file. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the affected Autodesk product, not to download a replacement DLL.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the right starting point:
- The error appears when AutoCAD or another Autodesk program starts: repair that Autodesk installation first.
- The file disappeared after an update, reinstall, or failed setup: reinstall the affected product using Autodesk’s official installer.
- Windows Security recently detected or quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “The specified module could not be found,” but the file exists: a dependent component may be missing.
- The message says “not designed to run on Windows” or includes
0xc000012f: the file may be damaged or incompatible. Reinstall the Autodesk product. - Several unrelated applications report Windows DLL errors: run DISM and SFC after checking the Autodesk installation.
- The error began after installing an add-in or driver: disable the add-in or update the relevant driver, but do not assume the driver supplied this DLL.
- You found the file on a download site: do not use it until you have tried the official repair path.
What is actctoolsres.dll
actctoolsres.dll is reported as AcTcToolsRes Resource DLL, associated with Autodesk software. It is an application file, not a Windows system component.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Public file catalogs associate it most closely with older AutoCAD installations. One catalog places it under an AutoCAD 2004 program directory, while other listings report conflicting architecture information. Those catalog records are not a current Autodesk component manifest, so they should not be treated as proof that every AutoCAD version uses the same file, version, size, or architecture.

The practical conclusion is more important than the catalog details:

- 2 programmable side buttons
- Lightweight and durable carry case
- It belongs with the Autodesk application that needs it.
- It should normally be located in that application’s installation directory.
- It should not be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - It is not supplied by Windows, DirectX, or the Visual C++ Redistributable.
- A file with the same name from another Autodesk release may be incompatible.
Is it 32-bit or 64-bit
Do not infer the architecture from a download page. Public listings disagree, and an old 32-bit Autodesk application may require a 32-bit DLL even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Check System type.
This tells you whether Windows is 64-bit, but it does not prove which architecture the Autodesk application or DLL requires. The Autodesk installer must supply the matching file.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
This is the most likely solution when the error appears while launching AutoCAD or another Autodesk program.
Try Repair from Control Panel
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find the affected Autodesk product in Programs and Features.
- Select it.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair, if that option is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the Autodesk application again.
Repair replaces missing or altered program files while attempting to preserve the existing installation.
If Repair is not available
Newer Autodesk installation frameworks may not provide the older Repair option. In that case:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account.
- Download the exact product, version, platform, and language required.
- Install it using the official Autodesk installer.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
Do not install a different AutoCAD release merely because it contains a similarly named file. Multiple Autodesk versions can have different dependencies and installation paths.
If the Autodesk installer offers Reinstall
Some classic installers provide Reinstall after you choose Uninstall/Change. Use it if Repair completes but the error remains:

- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application.
If Reinstall fails, obtain fresh installation media through Autodesk Account rather than copying an individual DLL.

A successful repair is indicated by the application opening normally without the missing-file message. If the same error returns immediately, continue with the checks below instead of repeatedly running the same repair.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file. Do not restore it automatically, because a file that resembles a legitimate Autodesk component may still be damaged or tampered with.
Check Windows Security Protection history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the Autodesk installation.
- Check the detected file path and threat name.
- Compare the path with the Autodesk program directory.
Only consider Restore when all of these are true:
- The file is inside the expected Autodesk installation directory.
- The Autodesk installation itself is trusted.
- The detection appears to be a false positive.
- You will repair or reinstall the application if there is any uncertainty.
Microsoft explains the Protection history process and the risks of restoring detected files in its Windows Security Protection history guidance.
Reinstalling the Autodesk product is generally safer than restoring a quarantined DLL manually. After reinstalling, update Windows Security definitions and run another scan.
Fix 3: Confirm whether the file exists in the Autodesk folder
This check helps distinguish a missing file from a missing dependency.
- Right-click the Autodesk shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Note the folder shown in Start in or the executable location.
- Open that folder in File Explorer.
- Search for
actctoolsres.dll.
If the file is absent, repair or reinstall the Autodesk product. Do not download a replacement.
If the file exists, check its path:
- A file inside the correct Autodesk program directory may be legitimate.
- A file in
System32,SysWOW64, Downloads, or a temporary folder should not be treated as the correct application copy. - Do not overwrite a copy used by another Autodesk installation.
A file can exist and still fail to load. The error “The specified module could not be found” may mean that a dependency required by actctoolsres.dll is missing. In that situation, repairing the owning application is still the primary fix.
Fix 4: Repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables when dependencies are involved
Visual C++ Redistributables do not normally supply actctoolsres.dll. However, a damaged runtime can prevent an Autodesk component from loading or can cause Autodesk installation failures.

- Open the menu beside the installed package.
- Select Modify.
- Select Repair.
- Repeat for other relevant installed Redistributable entries if the installer provides the option.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
You can also use Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entry.
- Click Change.
- Choose Repair.
If repair is unavailable or does not help, use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Match the package to the application. Older 32-bit Autodesk software may require the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
After installing or repairing the runtime, restart Windows and test Autodesk again. If the same message remains, return to Autodesk repair or reinstall rather than repeatedly reinstalling runtimes.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally reconstruct a third-party Autodesk DLL, so use them as secondary checks rather than as a replacement for Autodesk repair.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repairs were completed.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the Autodesk application.
Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows protected files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test Autodesk.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
- The error remains unchanged: repair or reinstall Autodesk, because SFC is not designed to restore this application DLL.
If manually checking Windows components is becoming repetitive and you do not know which corruption changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it identifies; its full-version repair is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Fix 6: Update Autodesk and related drivers
An incomplete Autodesk update can leave shortcuts and configuration entries behind while a required file is missing. Check Autodesk Account for updates for the exact product and version.
For drivers, use Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer’s official support page:

- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Device Manager is relevant when the Autodesk application fails alongside display, graphics, or other hardware errors. It does not replace reinstalling the Autodesk application, and it will not normally restore actctoolsres.dll.
When hunting through multiple hardware vendors and versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its full-version installation feature is optional, and the Autodesk installer remains the authoritative source for this DLL.
Fix 7: Disable a recently installed Autodesk add-in
An add-in can prevent the base application from starting or trigger an error during startup.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a known application installation, update, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Back up important work.
- Confirm the restore.
Microsoft describes the limitations of this process in its System Restore guidance. System Restore can remove applications or updates installed after the selected point, so it is not the first choice for a simple missing Autodesk file.
Do not use regsvr32 for this error
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft documents its purpose and syntax in the regsvr32 command reference.
A missing-file message does not prove that the DLL needs registration. There is no reliable evidence that actctoolsres.dll is a self-registering COM component. Therefore, do not run:
regsvr32 actctoolsres.dll
It may produce an entry-point or registration error and distract from the actual problem. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product instead.
Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Copying a DLL into a Windows system folder is not a general repair method. It can create:

FAQ
Is actctoolsres.dll a Windows file
No. It is associated with Autodesk software and should normally remain in the Autodesk application directory.
Which Autodesk product installed it
The strongest public association is with older AutoCAD installations, including a catalog-reported AutoCAD 2004 path. Autodesk does not provide a current authoritative product-to-file mapping for every release, so do not assume that every AutoCAD version uses the same file.
Is the file malware
The filename alone does not establish that. Check its path, publisher information, digital signature, and Windows Security detection. A file outside the expected Autodesk directory deserves closer inspection, but its absence from a Windows system folder is not evidence of malware.
Should I download a replacement
No. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk application from Autodesk’s official installer. A random DLL can be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.
What does “The specified module could not be found” mean
It can mean that actctoolsres.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Repairing Autodesk and checking relevant Visual C++ Redistributables are safer than copying the named file.
Can SFC restore actctoolsres.dll
Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary third-party Autodesk application files.
Do I need both System32 and SysWOW64
No. Do not copy this file into either directory. The Autodesk installer chooses the correct application location and architecture.

What information should I collect if the error persists
Record:
- The Autodesk product name and version
- The complete error message
- The path where Windows expects or found the DLL
- Your Windows version and system architecture
- Any recent Autodesk update or reinstall
- Any Windows Security quarantine event
- Whether the file exists in the Autodesk installation directory
