“Windows cannot find actscaleres.dll” or “The program can’t start because actscaleres.dll is missing from your computer” means that an AutoCAD-related installation cannot load one of its files. actscaleres.dll is an AutoCAD component, not a normal Windows system DLL.
The safest solution is to repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product that displays the error. Do not download the DLL from a random file website or copy it into System32.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that best matches what you see:
- AutoCAD stopped starting after an update or failed installation: repair the installation, or uninstall and reinstall it.
- The error appeared after cleanup software, manual deletion, or disk problems: reinstall the affected AutoCAD product.
- Microsoft Defender detected or quarantined the file: review Protection history before restoring anything.
- AutoCAD opens from its shortcut but fails when you double-click a DWG: check the file association and the AutoCAD version being launched.
- The dialog names
acadres.dll,acadltres.dll, oracui23res.dllinstead: troubleshoot that exact filename. Similar resource DLLs are not interchangeable. - The message says “not designed to run on Windows”: suspect a damaged or mismatched file rather than an ordinary missing-file problem.
- You use an old 32-bit AutoCAD build: install files from that same release. A file from a newer 64-bit installation may not work.
- Repair and reinstall both fail: investigate antivirus, permissions, Windows corruption, compatibility, and leftover Autodesk installations.
What is actscaleres.dll?
actscaleres.dll is reported as “acTscale Resources” and is associated with AutoCAD from Autodesk. The name indicates a resource library used by the application, rather than a standalone Windows feature.

It is not established as a component of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It should normally be supplied alongside the AutoCAD installation that loads it. The correct folder varies by AutoCAD release, product type, installation method, and system architecture.
Historical public file records describe an older copy as a 32-bit DLL, but that information is not a current Autodesk specification. Do not use an old version number, file size, or architecture label to select a replacement.
AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD-based vertical products can have their own files and installation layouts. The important question is not only whether AutoCAD is installed, but which Autodesk product and release produced the error.
First, record the complete error
Before changing anything, copy the full dialog text. Record:

- The exact filename, including its spelling.
- Whether the message says missing, cannot be loaded, corrupted, or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- Any error code.
- Whether the error appears when launching AutoCAD, opening a DWG, or starting another Autodesk-based program.
- The AutoCAD product and release shown in its shortcut, installer, or Autodesk account.
This matters because an old AutoCAD shortcut or DWG association may be launching a different installation from the one you expect.
Fix 1: Repair AutoCAD 2021 or earlier
Older Autodesk installations commonly provide a Repair or Reinstall option through Windows maintenance tools.
- Close AutoCAD and any Autodesk helper windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the exact AutoCAD product.
- Select its menu button and choose Modify, if available.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the process to replace missing or altered files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AutoCAD from its normal shortcut.
On some Windows installations, use the older Control Panel path:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select AutoCAD.
- Choose Uninstall/Change or Modify.
- Select Repair.
Test the program after the repair. If actscaleres.dll is still missing, repeat the maintenance process and choose Reinstall instead of Repair, where that option is available.

Repair is preferable to copying a single DLL because it restores files from the same product package and preserves the expected relationship between the application and its resource libraries.
Fix 2: Reinstall AutoCAD 2022 or later
Newer Autodesk installation systems generally do not provide the older Repair/Reinstall maintenance option. In that case, remove and install the product again from the official Autodesk source.
- Back up AutoCAD templates, profiles, custom tool palettes, scripts, and other user configuration.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate the affected Autodesk product.
- Open its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the Autodesk account that owns the product.
- Download the installer for the same product and release.
- Run the installer with an administrator account.
- Start AutoCAD and test the application.
If the installer offers an update through Autodesk Access, apply the available product update after installation. Do not mix files from separate AutoCAD releases to satisfy the error.
If uninstalling and reinstalling leaves the same failure, use Autodesk’s documented clean-uninstall procedure for that product. This may be necessary when a broken installation record, old file association, or leftover folder prevents the new installer from working correctly.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file. Check this before repeatedly reinstalling.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry that names
actscaleres.dll, AutoCAD, or the Autodesk installation directory. - Expand the entry and read the detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only when the installation is known to be legitimate, the file belongs to the trusted Autodesk installation, and the detection is clearly a false positive. If Defender immediately quarantines it again, stop restoring it. Scan the system and reinstall AutoCAD from its official installer.
A clean reinstall is usually safer than recovering an isolated quarantined DLL because it replaces the complete, matching application package.
Fix 4: Check the application and file association
If AutoCAD opens normally from its shortcut but the error appears when opening a DWG file, Windows may be using an obsolete AutoCAD association.

- Right-click a DWG file.
- Select Open with.
- Choose Choose another app.
- Select the intended AutoCAD installation.
- Enable the option to always use that app for DWG files.
- Open the file again.
If the intended AutoCAD version is not listed, do not browse randomly through old program folders. Open AutoCAD directly, confirm which release is installed, and repair or reinstall that release.
An old shortcut can cause the same problem. Right-click the shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field. If it points to an obsolete installation, remove the shortcut and create a new one from the current installation.
Fix 5: Verify that the filename is really actscaleres.dll
AutoCAD can report resource-DLL errors involving similar names, including:
acadres.dllacadltres.dllacui23res.dll
These files are not interchangeable. If the dialog names another DLL, follow the repair path for the product that produced that message instead of searching for actscaleres.dll.

Resource errors can also follow an incomplete installation, an old file association, or mixed files from different AutoCAD generations. Repairing or reinstalling the affected product is safer than replacing one similarly named file.
Fix 6: Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Modern AutoCAD releases generally require 64-bit Windows, while older AutoCAD versions may have different architecture requirements. A 32-bit legacy application must load compatible 32-bit application files. A 64-bit application cannot safely use an arbitrary 32-bit replacement with the same filename.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
This does not identify which architecture actscaleres.dll should have in every AutoCAD release. There is no current public Autodesk manifest establishing a universal architecture, version, or size for this filename.
Use the installer for the exact AutoCAD product and release. Do not obtain a DLL from another computer unless the complete application installation is being restored through an approved Autodesk deployment process.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components only as a secondary check
actscaleres.dll belongs to AutoCAD, so Windows system repair commands are not the primary fix. They can still help when the failure began after broader Windows corruption or an interrupted update.
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Try AutoCAD again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be expected to restore an ordinary Autodesk DLL that is missing from an AutoCAD folder.

Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not normally run:
regsvr32 actscaleres.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration function such as DllRegisterServer. An application-private resource DLL generally does not need COM registration. Registering it will not recreate a missing file, repair an incompatible copy, or fix a damaged AutoCAD installation.
If the command reports that a registration entry point is missing, that is expected for many ordinary application DLLs. Stop there and repair or reinstall AutoCAD.

A file can exist but still fail to load if the application cannot access its installation directory.
- Find the AutoCAD shortcut.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator once.
- Test the program.
- If it starts only with elevation, inspect the permissions on the Autodesk installation folder.
- Check whether security software is blocking the application.
- Confirm that the installation drive is available and not reporting disk errors.
Do not permanently run AutoCAD as administrator merely to hide a broken installation. Use the result as a diagnostic clue, then repair permissions or reinstall through the official installer.
If you are also seeing graphics-driver crashes, blank windows, or display errors, update the driver through the computer or graphics-device manufacturer. - Do not ignore a Defender detection that returns immediately after restoration.
Windows searches an application’s directory as part of its DLL loading process. Copying a third-party DLL into a system directory is unnecessary and can make troubleshooting less reliable.

If repair and reinstall still fail
Collect these details before contacting Autodesk support or your administrator:
- The exact AutoCAD product and release.
- Windows edition and system architecture.
- The complete error text and code.
- Whether the problem affects launching AutoCAD, opening DWG files, or both.
- Whether the problem began after an update, cleanup, antivirus action, disk failure, or manual deletion.
- The result of Repair, Reinstall, and any clean uninstall.
- Any Protection history detection.
- Whether another Windows user account sees the same error.
Also back up user settings before a clean uninstall. A clean removal may delete application data and can affect profiles, templates, tool palettes, and customizations.
