Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →agt0412.dll is a 32-bit Microsoft Agent language-resource DLL, not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. The safest fix for an agt0412.dll missing or not found error is to identify the old application requesting it, then repair or reinstall that application from trusted original media.
What this file actually does
The file’s description is Microsoft Agent International Dll, and its publisher metadata identifies Microsoft Corporation. It belongs to Microsoft Agent, an older ActiveX-based animated-character technology that applications could install as part of their own setup.
Microsoft Agent was deprecated beginning with Windows 7 and may be unavailable on later Windows versions. That is why a modern PC can suddenly display an error for a file associated with software from the Windows XP era or earlier, especially after an upgrade, migration, cleanup, or reinstall.
Historical file inventories place the DLL in this type of directory:

C:WindowsMSAgentINTLagt0412.dll
That is a historical location, not a recommendation to download the file and copy it there. The original installer may instead keep a private copy in the application’s own directory.
The 0412 suffix is consistent with the Windows locale identifier for Korean. Public file databases commonly describe agt0412.dll as a Korean-language, 32-bit Microsoft Agent file and report matching version and size metadata, but those values are third-party observations rather than current Microsoft package information. A current official Microsoft download specifically for this DLL could not be verified.
Do not assume that the file is:
- A Windows system component
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX file
- A .NET Framework file
- A device-driver component
- A file that belongs in
System32orSysWOW64
Microsoft Agent documentation confirms that applications could include Agent in their own installation process. In practice, the program that launches the error is more important than the DLL filename. Start by finding that program.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when launching one old program | That program’s Agent installation is incomplete or damaged | Repair or reinstall the named program |
| The error began after uninstalling software | A shared Agent component or dependent application was removed | Reinstall the original application completely |
| Windows Security lists the file in quarantine | Antivirus removed or blocked the DLL | Verify the file’s origin before restoring it |
| The DLL exists but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | Another dependency may be missing | Repair the parent application and inspect its dependencies |
| “Entry point not found” appears | The DLL does not match the application or another Agent file | Reinstall the complete application, not just this file |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” appears | Wrong architecture, damaged file, or an incompatible legacy program | Use the original installer and test compatibility settings |
| The message appears at every startup | An old startup entry or scheduled task is still calling the program | Identify and remove or repair the obsolete application |
| SFC and DISM finish successfully but the error remains | Windows does not own this application DLL | Reinstall the program that requires Microsoft Agent |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting agt0412.dll
Do this before changing any Windows folder.
Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and the text around the missing-file message. The application name may appear in the title bar, or the error may be shown immediately after launching a particular program.
Write down:
- The executable or application name
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only when opening a feature
- The complete path shown, if any
- Whether the message says missing, corrupted, entry point not found, or not designed to run on Windows
If the dialog names a program, that is the program to repair.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- In the right pane, select Find.
- Search for
agt0412.dll. - Review recent entries around the time of the failure.
The event may identify the executable that attempted to load the DLL. If it does not, look for entries mentioning the application that fails to start.
Check startup remnants
If the message appears before you open anything:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for old Microsoft software, installers, utilities, or unknown entries.
- Right-click a clearly identified obsolete entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
For scheduled tasks:
- Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch old software.
- Open a task’s Actions tab before changing it.
- Disable only a task you can positively associate with the failing application.
Do not disable random Windows tasks simply because their names are unfamiliar.
Fix 2: Repair the application that owns the dependency
This is the most likely solution.
Repair an app on Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot button beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart the application and test the feature that previously failed.
Repair normally preserves the application’s data. If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and select Reset only when you understand that the application may lose its local settings or stored data.
Some traditional desktop programs do not show Advanced options. For those applications, open Control Panel:
- Press the Windows key and type Control Panel.
- Open Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Look for Repair, Change, or Modify.
- Follow the installer’s repair process.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Repair an app on Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose the affected application.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart and test the program.
If the application has no Repair option, use Control Panel > Programs and Features and choose Repair, Change, or Modify.
Reinstall when Repair fails
If Repair does not restore the file:
- Back up the application’s documents and settings.
- Obtain the original installer, installation media, or vendor-provided installer.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the program again using an administrator account.
- Restart once more.
- Launch the program from its normal shortcut.
Reinstall the complete application rather than searching for agt0412.dll separately. The installer may install several matching Agent files, registry entries, language resources, and supporting components. Copying one DLL cannot reproduce that installation.
If the application came from old Microsoft media, use the original licensed media or the publisher’s official support channel. Microsoft’s historical Agent documentation explains the technology, but it does not provide a current standalone download for this particular language DLL.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove an old DLL because legacy files may have unusual behavior or lack modern signing information. Do not restore the file solely because its name is familiar.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open any entry associated with
agt0412.dllor the affected program. - Review the detected path and action.
Restore the file only when all of these are true:
- It came from the original application installer or trusted installation media.
- The path matches the application or its known Agent installation.
- You recognize the program that requires it.
- A current Windows Security scan does not identify the installer or application as malicious.
- You are not restoring an unexplained copy from a temporary or download folder.
If the file’s origin is uncertain, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from trusted media instead. Do not add a broad Defender exclusion for a folder merely to make the error disappear.
Fix 4: Confirm the architecture and complete dependency set
Public records identify agt0412.dll as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. That is consistent with the old applications that used Microsoft Agent.
A 32-bit DLL normally serves a 32-bit application. It is not made compatible by placing it in an arbitrary Windows directory. On 64-bit Windows, Windows uses System32 for 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 for 32-bit system components, despite the confusing names. Application installers normally select the correct private directory themselves.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Architecture problems commonly produce messages such as:
- “The procedure entry point could not be located”
- “The application was unable to start correctly”
- “The file is not designed to run on Windows”
- A missing-module error even though the DLL is present
The reliable response is to reinstall the complete 32-bit application and its matching Agent files. Do not combine agt0412.dll from one build with other Agent files from another build or language.
If the application is very old, test its compatibility without replacing files:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Try the Windows version recommended by the application’s documentation.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the application.
Compatibility mode cannot recreate a missing dependency, and it may not make an Agent-based program fully functional on Windows 11. It is a test for application compatibility after the correct files are installed.

Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker
SFC and DISM are appropriate when broader Windows corruption is suspected. They may not restore agt0412.dll, because the available evidence points to Microsoft Agent or an application installation rather than a current protected Windows component.
Run DISM first, followed by SFC:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected program. If both commands complete without fixing the error, return to the application repair or reinstall steps. Do not keep repeating the commands when the failing file belongs to an old application.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it identifies; its repair functions are handled by the full version, but reinstalling the application that owns agt0412.dll remains the definitive fix for an application-specific dependency.
Fix 6: Do not update drivers for this DLL error unless another symptom points there
agt0412.dll is not a device driver. Updating a graphics, sound, chipset, or printer driver will not normally restore it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse Device Manager only if the computer also has a separate hardware problem:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open Driver to review the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only when the device has a genuine issue.
- Restart Windows and test the hardware separately from the Agent application.
Do not use Device Manager as a substitute for reinstalling the old program. If you are also dealing with multiple stale or mismatched drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions; installation of drivers is handled by the full version, and it is not a replacement for restoring the Microsoft Agent application.
Fix 7: Check Windows Features, but do not expect a feature toggle to install Agent
Microsoft Agent is not a normal modern Windows optional feature. Turning on unrelated items such as .NET Framework or legacy components will not reliably provide agt0412.dll.
You can check available features safely:
- Press the Windows key and type Windows Features.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off.
- Review the list.
- Do not enable an item merely because its name sounds related.
- Select Cancel if the application’s documentation does not identify a required feature.
Some old programs require a particular Windows component, framework, or compatibility setting. Follow the application’s original documentation rather than installing several runtimes at random. Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not the normal first fix for this Microsoft Agent language DLL.

System Restore is appropriate when:
- The error began after a known installation or removal.
- A restore point exists from before the failure.
- Reinstalling the application is unavailable or unsuccessful.
- You understand that recently installed applications and drivers may be rolled back.
To use it:
- Press the Windows key and type Create a restore point.
- Open the result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the list.
- Continue only if the rollback is acceptable.
- Complete the wizard and restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings. It does not delete personal documents, but it is not a substitute for a clean reinstall of the application.
If several Windows features are failing and the problem is broader than one legacy program, Windows 11 also provides Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Use it for suspected Windows-wide corruption, not as the first response to an application-owned DLL.
Why downloading agt0412.dll is usually the wrong fix
Random DLL download sites create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- It may be the wrong language or build.
- It may be the wrong architecture.
- It may not match the other Microsoft Agent files.
- It may be placed in a directory the application never searches.
- It may conceal a damaged or incompatible parent application.
Do not download the file and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the application directory unless the original installer or the software vendor specifically instructs you to do so.
There is also no reliable reason to register it with regsvr32. Microsoft documents regsvr32 as a tool for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A missing language-resource or runtime dependency generally does not become usable after registration.
Rank #4
If official application documentation explicitly requires registration, use the exact command and architecture documented by that application. Otherwise, skip regsvr32.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Collect the details below before contacting the application vendor or attempting further changes:
- The exact error wording
- The executable named in the dialog or Event Viewer
- The full path Windows expects for
agt0412.dll - Your Windows version and architecture
- The affected application’s version and architecture
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only inside one feature
- Whether Windows Security quarantined the file
- Whether the original installer completed successfully
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that agt0412.dll exists but a dependency loaded by it is absent. “Entry point not found” usually indicates a mismatched DLL set. Those messages call for dependency and version investigation within the parent application, not repeated copying of the same filename.
If the application itself is incompatible with modern Windows, use its documented compatibility procedure, a supported updated release if one exists, or an isolated older Windows environment appropriate for the software. Microsoft Agent’s deprecated status means restoring the DLL alone may still not restore the complete program.

FAQ
Is agt0412.dll a Windows system file?
It is associated with Microsoft Agent, not verified as a current protected Windows 10 or Windows 11 system file. Repair the application that installed it before trying system-wide repairs.
Is 0412 a version number?
No. The suffix is consistent with a Windows locale identifier for Korean. Public metadata may report a version separately, but those records are not current Microsoft package manifests.
Is agt0412.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. The application that loads it must use a compatible 32-bit dependency set.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. Those packages are not the normal source of this Microsoft Agent language-resource DLL. Install them only when the affected application’s documentation specifically requires them.
Can SFC restore the file?
Usually only if Windows owns the file. Run DISM followed by SFC when broader corruption is suspected, but expect to repair or reinstall the legacy application if the commands do not help.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Do not copy an untrusted DLL into a Windows system directory. Use the original application installer so Windows and the application receive the correct files and paths.
Is a quarantined copy safe to restore?
Not automatically. Restore it only after verifying its trusted installer source, path, signature, and application history. Otherwise reinstall from trusted original media.
Why does the error appear when no program is open?
A startup entry, scheduled task, service, or remnant of an uninstalled application may still be launching an old Agent-dependent executable. Use Task Manager, Task Scheduler, and Event Viewer to identify it before deleting anything.
