acvbares.dll is described as AutoCAD Resource DLL and is associated with Autodesk’s VBA Resource DLL component. It belongs to the AutoCAD application rather than Windows itself.

Modern AutoCAD versions generally install VBA separately. Autodesk distributes release-specific VBA modules, and the correct package depends on the AutoCAD year and, for some releases, whether the installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not copy this file to:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another AutoCAD release’s program folder
- A folder downloaded from a DLL catalog
The correct location is the Autodesk installation directory for the AutoCAD release that needs the file.
Diagnose the failure before changing anything
The exact symptom helps distinguish a missing VBA component from a damaged AutoCAD installation or a missing dependency.

Also note when the error began. A recent AutoCAD update, repair, uninstall, disk cleanup, antivirus event, or move to another drive can explain why the file disappeared.
Fix 1: Install the correct Autodesk VBA module
This is the most likely fix when the error occurs while running a VBA macro, opening the VBA editor, or using an AutoCAD command that depends on VBA.
Autodesk provides a separate download page for the VBA Module for AutoCAD. Use the official Autodesk support site, select the exact AutoCAD year, and choose the matching architecture when the page provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.
Do not select a package based only on the Windows version. A 64-bit Windows installation does not automatically mean that every old AutoCAD installation uses a 64-bit VBA component.

Step-by-step installation
- Close AutoCAD and any other Autodesk programs.
- Open your browser.
- Go to Autodesk Support and search for Download the Microsoft VBA Module for AutoCAD.
- Select the installed AutoCAD release.
- Select the correct 32-bit or 64-bit package when choices are shown.
- Download the installer from Autodesk.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the extraction location if the package first extracts its files.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start AutoCAD directly from its Start menu shortcut.
- At the AutoCAD command prompt, enter:
VBAIDE
- Press Enter.
If the VBA environment opens, the module is installed and available. If AutoCAD reports that VBA is not installed, the selected package may not match the AutoCAD release, or the existing VBA installation may be damaged.
Installer filenames vary by release. Names such as AcVbaInstaller.msi or a release-specific self-extracting executable are examples, not universal filenames.

If the installer keeps running Windows Installer configuration
The VBA Enabler may configure itself for the main AutoCAD language or for installed toolsets. Let the configuration complete instead of cancelling it immediately.
Open each relevant AutoCAD product or toolset once, allow Windows Installer to finish, restart Windows, and test VBAIDE again. If configuration loops repeatedly, continue with the repair procedure below.
Fix 2: Repair the installed VBA Enabler
If the VBA module is already listed but AutoCAD still reports that it is missing, repair it from Control Panel.
- Close AutoCAD.
- Press
WindowsplusR. - Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, look for an Autodesk VBA Enabler or VBA Module entry.
- Select the entry.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent available option.
- Follow the repair prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Open AutoCAD and test
VBAIDE.
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Return to Programs and Features.
- Select the Autodesk VBA Enabler.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Delete only temporary files that Windows allows you to remove. You can open the temporary folder by pressing
WindowsplusR, entering%temp%, and pressing Enter. - Reinstall the matching VBA module from Autodesk.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test AutoCAD and the affected
.DVBproject.
Uninstalling only the VBA module is preferable to removing the complete AutoCAD installation at this stage.
Fix 3: Repair AutoCAD itself
A failed update, incomplete uninstall, disk problem, or damaged installation can remove acvbares.dll or related resources.
Repair from Windows settings
- Press
WindowsplusI. - Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the exact AutoCAD release.
- Select the three-dot menu or the program entry.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Repair, depending on what Autodesk installed.
- Follow the Autodesk installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD before reinstalling any add-ins.

- Choose Change.
- Select Repair if available.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
Repairing the main product restores the application’s own resources and dependencies. It is safer than downloading only acvbares.dll.
If repair fails
Use Autodesk’s original installation media or official installer for that exact release. Uninstalling and reinstalling AutoCAD can remove custom settings, add-ins, and local configuration, so back up important templates, profiles, scripts, and VBA projects first.
A clean reinstall is appropriate when:
- Repair reports that required source files are unavailable.
- The AutoCAD installation was moved manually.
- Several AutoCAD resource DLLs are missing.
- The error returns immediately after repair.
- Multiple failed updates left the installer in an inconsistent state.
Install the same AutoCAD release first, then install its matching VBA module, then add third-party plug-ins one at a time.

Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
If acvbares.dll existed previously and disappeared after a scan, Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined it.

- Search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry referring to the Autodesk installation directory or
acvbares.dll. - Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error.
- Confirm that the original file came from the legitimate Autodesk installation.
- If you are confident it is a false detection, use the available restore or allow option.
- Repair the AutoCAD or VBA installation afterward.
Microsoft warns that a restored file may be detected again. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection. If security software immediately quarantines a repaired file, stop and verify the installer source with Autodesk or your organization’s security administrator.
A DLL downloaded from an untrusted website should not be restored or added to an antivirus exclusion list.
Fix 5: Confirm the AutoCAD year and architecture
A similarly named file from another release is not a valid replacement.
Check the installed AutoCAD release:
- Open AutoCAD if possible.
- Select Help.
- Select About AutoCAD.
- Record the product name and release year.
- Note whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit if the About window displays that information.
If AutoCAD will not open:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Find AutoCAD.
- Review its installed version and publisher information.
- Check the original Autodesk installer or deployment records.
Then compare that information with the VBA module’s release and architecture. Older AutoCAD releases and newer AutoCAD releases do not necessarily use the same VBA generation. A legacy 32-bit file should not be placed into a newer 64-bit AutoCAD installation, and a newer VBA module should not be assumed to support an AutoCAD 2006 or 2007 installation.
If several AutoCAD years are installed, repair each release separately. Installing VBA for one year does not necessarily repair another year’s installation.
Fix 6: Test AutoCAD without add-ins and custom settings
If AutoCAD starts normally but fails when opening a drawing, launching from Explorer, or loading a plug-in, the error may not be caused by acvbares.dll itself.
Try this sequence:
- Start AutoCAD directly from its installed shortcut.
- Do not open a DWG by double-clicking it in File Explorer.
- Test a blank drawing.
- Temporarily disable third-party AutoCAD add-ins.
- Test the VBA command again.
- If the error disappears, re-enable add-ins one at a time.
- Reset AutoCAD settings using the Autodesk reset utility or the reset option provided with your release.
- Repair AutoCAD if the problem continues.
A shortcut, file association, language pack, profile, or plug-in can trigger a demand-load error that mentions a related resource file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a tool for registering DLL-based components in the Windows registry.

acvbares.dll is identified as an Autodesk resource DLL. There is no verified evidence that it should be registered manually.
Do not run:
regsvr32 acvbares.dll
Do not follow instructions that use:
regsvr32 /u acvbares.dll
regsvr32 /i acvbares.dll
These commands are unlikely to repair AutoCAD VBA and may produce an error such as:
DllRegisterServer in acvbares.dll failed
Repair or reinstall the Autodesk component instead.
Fix 8: Use DISM and SFC only for possible Windows corruption
Because acvbares.dll belongs to Autodesk, Windows system repair tools will not normally restore it. They are relevant when Windows Installer is failing, system files are damaged, or several unrelated applications are reporting component errors.
First install pending Windows updates and restart the computer. Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the AutoCAD repair or VBA installation.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components and protected system files, not a missing Autodesk DLL. If both commands complete successfully but AutoCAD still reports the error, return to the Autodesk repair path.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting harder. A device driver is not the normal home of acvbares.dll, and updating a driver will not usually replace an Autodesk VBA resource. Consider this path only if the problem began immediately after a graphics, display, storage, or chipset driver change and other applications also began failing.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Storage controllers, or the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the driver date and provider.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if the option is available and the problem began after that update.
- Otherwise obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.
Do not remove a working driver simply because AutoCAD reports a missing application DLL. Fix 10: Handle unsupported legacy AutoCAD releases
Very old AutoCAD releases may require an older VBA runtime that Autodesk no longer distributes through its current download page. Autodesk states that it may no longer be authorized to distribute VBA 6 or earlier for some legacy releases.

- Locate your original licensed Autodesk installation media.
- Check whether the original deployment includes the required VBA component.
- Contact Autodesk Support or your licensed administrator.
- Do not substitute a file from another AutoCAD year.
- Consider migrating the VBA project to a supported AutoCAD release if the old runtime cannot be obtained.
The current VBA module page should not be assumed to repair every old AutoCAD installation.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading acvbares.dll from a random DLL website is not a reliable repair. The file may be:
- The wrong AutoCAD release
- The wrong architecture
- Missing required dependencies
- Modified or malicious
- Incompatible with the installed language or service-pack level
- Placed in the wrong directory
It also leaves the damaged VBA installation unresolved. Even if copying the file removes one message, AutoCAD may fail later when loading AcVBA.arx, opening a macro, or configuring the VBA module.
