“The program can’t start because acverfyr.dll is missing from your computer.” If Windows reports that acverfyr.dll was not found, cannot be loaded, or is missing or corrupted, do not download a replacement DLL first.
acverfyr.dll is an old Microsoft Windows application-compatibility component associated with the Windows 2000 and Windows XP-era AppPatch, or application-compatibility, subsystem. Historical Windows inventories place it under:

It is not normally treated as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, driver, or modern standalone redistributable. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, the error usually means that an old installer, damaged application, leftover startup item, or incorrect dependency reference is requesting a legacy file.
Which fix applies to you
Use the description that matches what you see:
- The error appears when one particular program or game starts: repair or reinstall that program from its original source.
- The error appears during Windows startup: identify the leftover startup entry, scheduled task, service, or uninstaller that is calling the file.
- The error appeared after antivirus activity: inspect Windows Security Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error began after an update, migration, or failed repair: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The error appears on an old Windows XP computer or during XP setup: use matching Windows installation media and service-pack files, not a Windows 10 or Windows 11 DLL.
- The message names another DLL as well: repair that dependency first. “The specified module could not be found” can mean a dependency of acverfyr.dll is missing rather than the named file itself.
- You were told to run
regsvr32 acverfyr.dll: do not use that as a general repair. This file is not established as a self-registering COM or ActiveX component.
What acverfyr.dll is
The file description associated with acverfyr.dll is Windows 2000 Shim Accessory DLL. It belongs historically to Microsoft Windows application-compatibility infrastructure, which helped older programs operate correctly on particular Windows releases.

That identity matters because many current DLL errors involve a known runtime package. For example, an error naming VCRUNTIME*.dll may justify investigating Visual C++ Redistributable packages. acverfyr.dll does not have that established relationship.
Some databases use the label “Windows Application Verifier DLL.” Do not interpret that label as proof that the file belongs to the current Application Verifier product. Microsoft’s current Application Verifier documentation discusses AppVerif.exe and verifier functionality, not a modern downloadable acverfyr.dll package.
Historical Windows XP records identify an x86 file in the 5.1.2600.x family under AppPatch. A third-party listing may show a different version or size, but those entries do not establish a current Microsoft release. There is no verified Microsoft standalone download page for acverfyr.dll.
First, identify the program requesting the file
Repairing the wrong program can leave the error in place. Find the caller before replacing anything.
Check the error dialog
Read the complete message and record:
- The executable named in the title or body
- The folder shown in the error, if any
- Whether the message appears during startup, login, shutdown, or while launching a program
- Whether another DLL or a specific installation is mentioned
If the dialog says that a particular application cannot start, that application is your first repair target.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Sort by Status or review recently installed entries.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and select Open file location.
- Note the application name and folder before disabling anything.
- Right-click the entry again and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
If the error disappears, repair or uninstall the application associated with that startup entry. Disabling startup only prevents the caller from running; it does not repair the missing file.
Check installed applications
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Sort by installation date if the problem began recently.
- Select the suspected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair first.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local settings.
- Restart and test the program.
For a traditional desktop application, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows key, type Control Panel, and open it.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Complete the vendor installer and restart Windows.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Windows+X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Filter Current Log in the Actions pane.
- Review errors recorded at the time of the acverfyr.dll message.
- Look for the application name, executable path, faulting module, or installation component.
Event Viewer may not name acverfyr.dll directly, but it can identify the executable that loads it.

This is the safest and most likely fix when only one application requests acverfyr.dll.
Use the application’s repair option
Use the application’s own launcher or installer if it offers Repair, Verify, or Scan and repair.
For a game launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Open your library.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify integrity, Verify files, or the equivalent option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart the launcher and test the game.
The exact label differs between launchers. The principle is the same: restore the application’s files from its trusted installation source rather than copying a DLL from elsewhere.
Reinstall from original media or the vendor
If repair does not work:
- Back up saved games, profiles, templates, or other personal data.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download or retrieve the installer from the original vendor, trusted company portal, or original installation media.
- Install the program using an administrator account if required.
- Restart again.
- Test the application before restoring optional plug-ins or modifications.
If the program is old and no longer supported, its installer may have a hard-coded dependency on an obsolete Windows component. In that case, use a suitable legacy Windows environment rather than forcing an old DLL into a current system.

Do not place an arbitrary copy beside the executable. Windows DLL loading depends on the application directory, system directories, manifests, redirection rules, and dependencies. Microsoft documents these risks in its guidance on DLL loading and redirection.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined or removed a file, but a missing-file message alone does not prove that the file was safe.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections recorded when the error began.
- Expand a relevant detection.
- Record the original file path, detection name, and affected application.
- Verify that the path belongs to the Windows installation or the application you trust.
- Confirm the file’s publisher and digital signature before considering restoration.
- Run a Quick scan or Full scan after reviewing the event.
Restore a file only when you have established that it came from a legitimate Microsoft or application installation and was incorrectly quarantined. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless it is explicitly allowed. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
If the file came from a random DLL download site, do not restore it. Remove it and reinstall the owning application from trusted media.
Fix 3: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Use this path when several Windows components behave incorrectly, the error began after an update or migration, or the caller appears to be part of Windows.
These commands do not download acverfyr.dll from an unknown source. They repair the Windows component store and protected system files using Windows’ own repair mechanisms.
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows when it completes.
DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update cannot provide the required files, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application that produced the error.
A successful SFC result says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. Test the original application after restarting, not just the command window.

- If corruption remains, use System Restore or an in-place repair installation.
Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions explain the DISM and SFC sequence and how to interpret common results.
Repeating SFC without knowing which component changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows reported system problems, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC tools remain the direct Windows repair path.
Fix 4: Remove a leftover startup item, task, or service
If the error began after uninstalling software, the missing file may be requested by a remnant rather than an active application.
Review Task Scheduler
- Press the Windows key and type Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler.
- Select Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks whose names match the removed application or vendor.
- Double-click a task and open the Actions tab.
- Check the executable path and command.
- If it clearly belongs to removed software, return to the task list.
- Right-click the task and select Disable.
- Restart Windows and test.
Delete a task only after confirming its owner. Do not remove an unfamiliar Microsoft task solely because its name looks technical.
Review services
- Press Windows+R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for a service belonging to the removed application.
- Double-click it.
- Check Path to executable.
- If it clearly belongs to obsolete software, select Stop.
- Set Startup type to Disabled.
- Restart Windows.
If the service is important to security, backup, storage, or hardware management, identify it before changing it.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall a related driver only when the caller identifies one
acverfyr.dll is not established as a driver file. Do not update every driver merely because a DLL error appeared. Investigate this path only when the calling application is a graphics, audio, device-management, or hardware utility and Event Viewer identifies a driver-related failure.
Check Device Manager
- Press Windows+X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category related to the affected hardware.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider and driver date.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update:
- Return to the device’s Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean reinstall, download the driver from the computer, motherboard, graphics, or device manufacturer and follow its installation instructions. Do not use a driver package to supply acverfyr.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDriver inventories can be tedious when several devices have stale packages. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing reported driver problems, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the error.
Fix 6: Handle an old Windows XP installation correctly
If the error appears on Windows XP, during XP setup, or during repair of an old XP machine, use files matching the installed release.
The replacement must match:
- Windows edition and release
- 32-bit architecture
- Service-pack level
- Language
- Installation media or update source
Use the matching Windows installation media, the correct service pack or update source, System File Checker, or System Restore. Do not copy an acverfyr.dll from Windows 10 or Windows 11 into an XP installation, and do not use a modern 64-bit system file as a substitute for an x86-era component.
Windows XP is no longer a supported operating system for normal internet-connected use. If the old application must continue running, isolate the legacy environment and keep important files backed up.
Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET usually do not apply
A DLL extension does not identify the package that owns a file. acverfyr.dll is not reliably associated with:
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- DirectX
- .NET
- A current device driver
- The current Application Verifier product
Installing several Visual C++ Redistributables will not normally restore a historical AppPatch file. Investigate Visual C++ only if the error also names a runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll.
Likewise, install DirectX or .NET only when the affected application specifically requires those components and the installer comes from Microsoft or the application vendor.
Why regsvr32 is normally the wrong repair
regsvr32 registers COM and ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points. It does not install an ordinary Windows compatibility or runtime DLL.
Recommended Free Tools
Running:
regsvr32 acverfyr.dll
may produce an entry-point or registration error. That result does not prove Windows is missing a registration. It usually means the command does not apply to this file.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor explicitly identifies a self-registering COM or ActiveX component and provides the correct architecture-specific command. Otherwise, repair Windows or reinstall the application that owns the dependency.
Do not download acverfyr.dll from random DLL sites
Avoid downloading this file from DLL aggregators, search-result mirrors, forums, or file-sharing pages. A downloaded DLL can have:
- Malware or tampering
- The wrong version
- The wrong architecture
- An invalid or missing Microsoft signature
- A private copy that conflicts with the application
- No effect because another dependency is missing
It can also conceal the real problem, such as a damaged installer, stale startup task, or compromised system.

Prevention after the error is fixed
- Keep Windows and supported applications updated.
- Remove old startup entries, tasks, and services when uninstalling obsolete software.
- Keep installers and license information for legacy applications.
- Use application launchers’ file-verification features instead of copying individual DLLs.
- Review Windows Security Protection history when a file suddenly disappears.
- Keep backups before repairing an old Windows installation.
- Avoid mixing files between Windows releases or between 32-bit and 64-bit installations.
- Record the executable path before changing system files.
FAQ
Is acverfyr.dll a Microsoft file?
Historical Windows records identify it as a Microsoft Windows application-compatibility DLL associated with Windows 2000 and Windows XP-era AppPatch components. That does not establish it as a normal current Windows 10 or Windows 11 download.
Should I copy acverfyr.dll into System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The strongest historical path is %WinDir%AppPatch, and Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not automatically need a copied replacement there. Identify the caller and repair its owning installation.
Is acverfyr.dll part of Visual C++?
There is no reliable evidence that Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable distributes this filename. Do not install Visual C++ solely because the missing file ends in .dll.
Is it safe to run regsvr32 acverfyr.dll?
Normally no. This is not established as a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL, so regsvr32 is not a general fix.
Why does Windows say “The specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The named DLL may depend on another missing file, or the application may be searching the wrong path. Check the caller, its installation files, Event Viewer, and the application’s repair option.
What if the error appears only at startup?
Check Task Manager > Startup apps, Task Scheduler, Services, and recently removed applications. Disable the confirmed obsolete caller, then uninstall or repair its parent application.
What if DISM and SFC do not fix it?
Repair the affected application, inspect Protection history, and review the CBS log. If Windows corruption continues, use System Restore or an in-place repair installation. Microsoft describes supported recovery choices in its Windows recovery options and its guidance for repairing Windows by reinstalling the current version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen should I suspect malware?
Suspect tampering when the file came from an untrusted source, appears in an unexpected directory, has no valid Microsoft signature, or the error is accompanied by unknown startup items, security alerts, or other system changes. Run a full or offline Microsoft Defender scan and use official installation media if system integrity cannot be established.
