The adctrls.dll error may say “The program can’t start because adctrls.dll is missing from your computer,” “The code execution cannot proceed because adctrls.dll was not found,” or “Error loading adctrls.dll. The specified module could not be found.” The message may also say that adctrls.dll is “not designed to run on Windows” or contains an error.
The 60-second answer
adctrls.dll is an Autodesk application DLL associated with AutoCAD and related Autodesk products. It is not a Windows system file, so do not download it from a DLL website, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 against it.

The safest first fix is to repair the exact Autodesk product named by the error. If repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall that same product and release using Autodesk’s installer or Autodesk Account. An Autodesk update that failed while AutoCAD was still running can also leave this file locked or incomplete.

C:Program FilesAutodeskAutoCAD <year>adctrls.dll
The exact folder depends on the product and release. Do not copy a file from another AutoCAD year, AutoCAD LT installation, or unrelated Autodesk product.
What is adctrls.dll?
The file is identified as ADCTRLS DLL and ADCTRLS Dynamic Link Library, published by Autodesk, Inc. Available evidence associates it with AutoCAD and AutoCAD-derived products.
Windows applications commonly load their private DLLs from the application’s own installation directory. That is why adctrls.dll should normally be beside the Autodesk executable that needs it, rather than in either of these Windows folders:

C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The Windows DLL search process does not mean that every DLL belongs in a system directory. Moving an application DLL into a system folder can create version conflicts and make troubleshooting harder.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact Autodesk product that failed. AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and other Autodesk-based products may use related components, so first identify the product and year shown in the shortcut, error, or installed-app list.
Common causes of the error
| Likely cause | What usually happened | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupt installation | A crash, power loss, cleanup, or interrupted setup damaged the product files | Repair or reinstall Autodesk |
| Failed update | An update could not replace a DLL that AutoCAD still had open | Close Autodesk processes, reboot, and retry |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed or isolated the file | Check Protection History, then repair or reinstall |
| Wrong DLL | A file from another release was copied into the folder | Remove the unofficial replacement and repair |
| Missing dependency | adctrls.dll exists, but another required module does not |
Repair the Autodesk installation |
| Windows corruption | Several unrelated programs also fail to load components | Update Windows, then run DISM and SFC |
The wording “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that adctrls.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load one of its dependencies.
Fix 1: Repair the affected Autodesk installation
This is the most likely solution when the error appears immediately after launching AutoCAD.
Recommended Free Tools
AutoCAD 2021 and earlier
- Close AutoCAD and any other Autodesk applications.
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features. On some Windows installations, select Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Find the exact AutoCAD or Autodesk product named in the error.
- Select the product and choose Modify.
- Select Repair or Reinstall, depending on which options are offered.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same Autodesk product again.
Choose Repair when available. It is intended to restore missing or damaged product files while preserving the existing installation.
Choose Reinstall if repair fails or if the installer reports that files are missing. Do not select a different AutoCAD release simply because it is the first entry in the list.
AutoCAD 2022 and newer
Autodesk product entries for newer releases may not offer the older Repair/Reinstall option through Windows Apps. In that case:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the exact Autodesk product and release.
- Select the menu beside it and choose Uninstall if the normal repair path is unavailable.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Sign in to your Autodesk Account or use the Autodesk installer associated with your license.
- Download and install the same product and release.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application before restoring custom files or add-ins.
If an ordinary uninstall and reinstall does not resolve the problem, use Autodesk’s clean-uninstall guidance for that product. A clean removal is more extensive and may remove leftover installation data, so use it after the normal repair or reinstall path has failed.
How to tell whether repair worked
Repair succeeded if the Autodesk application opens without the adctrls.dll message and can create or open a drawing normally.
If the same message returns, check the exact installation path and product year before repeating the process. Multiple AutoCAD installations can leave one shortcut pointing to an older or damaged copy.
Fix 2: Install pending Autodesk updates after closing AutoCAD
A failed update can leave adctrls.dll incomplete or locked. An Autodesk support discussion documented an update failure where the AutoCAD process was still using the DLL.
- Save work in every Autodesk application.
- Close AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and other Autodesk programs.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for
acad.exeand Autodesk processes that clearly belong to the product. - Select a remaining process and choose End task.
- Restart Windows. Rebooting is preferable to ending an uncertain background process manually.
- Open Start > Autodesk > Autodesk Access.
- Sign in if requested.
- Select Update beside the affected product.
- Allow the update to finish without launching AutoCAD during the process.
- Restart Windows and test the product.
If the update repeatedly fails, do not keep copying replacement DLLs into the installation folder. Repair or reinstall the affected release instead.
A file-lock problem is especially likely when the error began immediately after an update, when the installer reports a Windows Installer failure, or when the product worked before the update started.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus software can quarantine a genuine application DLL after a scan or suspected malware event.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
adctrls.dllor the Autodesk installation directory. - Open the detection and review its location and status.
Do not restore the file blindly. First confirm that:
- The file was located inside the genuine Autodesk installation directory.
- The Autodesk product was installed from Autodesk.
- The detection was not part of a broader malware incident.
- A current security scan does not identify other suspicious files.
If the file was quarantined and the installation is otherwise trustworthy, restore it only according to the Windows Security prompt, then repair or reinstall the Autodesk product. Reinstallation is usually safer because it supplies a fresh vendor-installed copy and checks the surrounding files.
If the detection followed a malware alert, leave the file quarantined, run a full Windows Security scan, and reinstall Autodesk from your Autodesk account after the system is clean.

Fix 4: Check whether the file exists in the correct folder
This check helps distinguish a missing file from a wrong-path or dependency problem.
- Right-click the AutoCAD shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, select Open File Location.
- Look in the folder containing the Autodesk executable.
- Search that folder for
adctrls.dll.
If the file is absent, repair or reinstall the product. Do not download a replacement from an unofficial source.
If the file is present but the error remains, possible explanations include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The application is loading from a different Autodesk installation.
- The DLL belongs to a different product or release.
- A dependency of the DLL is missing.
- The file was damaged or altered.
- Windows cannot load the file because of an architecture mismatch.
Check the shortcut and installed-product entries again. Repair the product whose executable is actually being launched.
Fix 5: Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit files
A DLL from another architecture or release can produce messages such as:
adctrls.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
That message does not prove that the DLL itself is defective. It can indicate that the application and DLL do not match, or that a dependency has the wrong architecture.
To check the application entry:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the exact Autodesk product and release.
- Check its installation location and product details.
- Compare that path with the shortcut you are using.
Do not combine files from:
- Different AutoCAD years
- AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT
- Different Autodesk products
- Separate 32-bit and 64-bit installations
- Another computer
There is no verified public version, size, hash, or architecture list that can safely be used to select a standalone adctrls.dll. The Autodesk installer is the appropriate source for the matching file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 6: Repair Windows components when other applications also fail
SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself may be damaged. They are not substitutes for repairing an Autodesk installation and may not restore an application DLL.
Use this path when other unrelated applications also show missing or corrupt component errors, Windows features are malfunctioning, or the problem began after broader system corruption.
Install Windows updates first
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD.
If the problem remains, run DISM followed by SFC.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait for verification to reach 100 percent.

If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart Windows and test AutoCAD. If it reports that it could not repair everything, run Windows Update and repeat the DISM command followed by SFC. If only AutoCAD reports the problem while Windows is otherwise healthy, return to the Autodesk repair path rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.
When manually running DISM and SFC, the difficult part is interpreting which component changed and whether the repair addressed the application problem. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it finds, while the repair action is performed by the full version; it is optional, and repairing or reinstalling Autodesk remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the problem is broader than AutoCAD
A graphics or other device-driver problem can cause AutoCAD crashes, display failures, or update instability, but it is not the usual cause of a missing adctrls.dll message.
Use Device Manager if other applications show graphics problems or Windows reports device errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test AutoCAD.
Do not replace adctrls.dll as a way to fix a graphics-driver problem. If Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer provides a driver specifically for the installed device, use the matching package and confirm that it supports the Windows version and device.

Do not run either of these commands as a routine solution:
regsvr32 adctrls.dll
regsvr32 /u adctrls.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. adctrls.dll is an Autodesk application runtime/component DLL, not a documented COM or ActiveX component that users should register manually.
A registration error does not prove that the DLL is corrupt. It usually means that the file does not support the registration operation or that the wrong architecture of regsvr32 was used. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product instead.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why copying adctrls.dll into System32 does not work
Manual copying is unsafe for several reasons:
- The replacement may belong to another Autodesk release.
- It may have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Its dependencies may still be missing.
- It may be modified or malicious.
- Windows may continue loading the application’s local copy.
- A temporary message change may be followed by crashes or licensing failures.
The correct source is the official Autodesk installer, Autodesk Account, or Autodesk Access for the installed product. There is no need to place this application DLL in System32 or SysWOW64.
When to use System Restore
System Restore is a secondary option, not the first fix.
Consider it only when:
- The error began immediately after a recent system change.
- Autodesk repair or reinstall is unavailable.
- A restore point predates the failure.
- You understand that applications, drivers, and settings installed after that point may be affected.
To open it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Review the affected programs.
- Follow the wizard and restart Windows.
If System Restore does not help, repair or reinstall the exact Autodesk product rather than restoring individual DLLs.

FAQ
Is adctrls.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies adctrls.dll with Autodesk applications, particularly AutoCAD and related products. It should normally remain in the Autodesk installation directory.
Can I download adctrls.dll separately?
Do not use random DLL download sites. A standalone copy may contain malware, belong to another release, or have the wrong architecture. Repair or reinstall the affected Autodesk product from Autodesk’s official installer or account.
Should I put adctrls.dll in System32?
No. It is an application DLL, not a normal Windows system component. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create additional conflicts.
Does the error mean AutoCAD is 32-bit?
No. The message alone does not identify the application architecture. It may indicate a missing dependency, an incompatible DLL, or a damaged installation. Keep all files matched to the exact product and release.
Why does Windows say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
The missing item may be a dependency of adctrls.dll, or Windows may be loading a different installation. Repair the product first and verify the executable’s folder.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not automatically. There is no verified evidence that a generic Visual C++ or DirectX installation is the correct fix for this specific DLL. Repair Autodesk first and install additional runtimes only when Autodesk documentation or a precise dependency error identifies one.
Is regsvr32 required?
Normally no. adctrls.dll is not documented as a DLL that users should register. Use Autodesk repair or reinstall instead.
What if the error began after an antivirus detection?
Review Windows Security Protection History and do not restore the file blindly. Scan the system and reinstall Autodesk if the file’s provenance is uncertain.
