Add phpMyAdmin as a third service in the same Docker Compose project as WordPress and its database. Set PMA_HOST to the database service name (usually db), publish phpMyAdmin’s container port 80 on an unused host port such as 8080, then run docker compose up -d. Open http://localhost:8080 and sign in with the database credentials.

What you are adding
A normal WordPress Compose stack has a WordPress container and a MySQL-compatible database container. phpMyAdmin is a web client that connects to that database; it does not replace MySQL or MariaDB and it does not store WordPress content itself. The service listens on port 80 inside its container, as documented by phpMyAdmin (phpMyAdmin setup documentation). Compose places all services in a project network, where service names become DNS names. Therefore, phpMyAdmin should address the database as db, not as localhost, when the database service is named db (Docker database guide).

The host port is a separate concept. A mapping of 8080:80 means port 8080 on your computer forwards to port 80 in the phpMyAdmin container. WordPress can continue using another mapping, such as 8081:80.
Prerequisites and project layout
Install Docker Desktop or Docker Engine with the Compose plugin, and run these commands from the directory containing your Compose file. You need a directory in which you can edit YAML and permission to create containers, networks, and named volumes. The example below uses the official WordPress image conventions for WORDPRESS_DB_* variables and persistent volumes (official WordPress image documentation).

If you already have a working WordPress stack, keep its existing service names and credentials. Add only the phpMyAdmin service and, if necessary, adjust PMA_HOST to match your actual database service name. If you are starting from scratch, save the following as compose.yaml.

wordpress:The db service creates the database and user used by WordPress. The wordpress service points to that database with WORDPRESS_DB_HOST: db. The new phpmyadmin service uses the same network and selects the database through PMA_HOST: db. The service’s depends_on entry expresses the relationship to the database, while the network still relies on the service name for connection.
Install and start phpMyAdmin step by step
- Open the project directory. Change to the folder that contains
compose.yaml(ordocker-compose.yml). - Add the service. Insert the
phpmyadminblock underservices. Keep indentation exact: YAML indentation defines the configuration hierarchy. - Match the database name. If your database service is called
mysql, setPMA_HOST: mysql. If it is calledmariadb, usePMA_HOST: mariadb. Do not automatically uselocalhost. - Choose an unused host port. Keep
8080:80for local access unless another process already occupies port 8080. Change only the left side, for example8090:80; the right side remains 80 because that is where phpMyAdmin listens. - Validate and start. Run
docker compose configto have Compose parse and render the file, then rundocker compose up -d. - Watch initialization. Use
docker compose psto see container status. If a service is still starting, inspect its output withdocker compose logs db phpmyadmin. - Open the interface. Visit
http://localhost:8080on the Docker host. For a different host, replacelocalhostwith that machine’s address and ensure its firewall allows the selected port. - Sign in. Enter the MySQL user and password from
MYSQL_USERandMYSQL_PASSWORD. The database server is already selected throughPMA_HOST; use the root account only if you deliberately configured and secured one.

How PMA_HOST and Compose networking work
Service names are internal hostnames
Compose creates a network for the project and registers each service name in Docker’s internal DNS. In the example, db resolves to the database container’s current address, even if the container is recreated. That is why both WordPress and phpMyAdmin use db as their database host.

Why localhost fails
Inside the phpMyAdmin container, localhost means the phpMyAdmin container itself. It does not mean the separate database container and normally has no MySQL server listening there. A login attempt using PMA_HOST: localhost therefore fails unless you intentionally run the database in the same container, which is not the Compose pattern shown here.
When the database has another name
Read the key immediately under services: in your Compose file. That key is the hostname to place in PMA_HOST. The value must not be the image name, container ID, published host port, or a guessed hostname. If you use multiple Compose projects, ensure phpMyAdmin and the database share the same project network; otherwise the service name will not resolve across isolated networks.

Use one consistent set of database credentials. The values in MYSQL_DATABASE, MYSQL_USER, and MYSQL_PASSWORD should correspond to WORDPRESS_DB_NAME, WORDPRESS_DB_USER, and WORDPRESS_DB_PASSWORD. The WordPress image supports these variables and also provides _FILE variants for Docker secrets (WordPress image documentation).
Do not commit real passwords to a public repository. A practical local arrangement is to keep non-secret structure in compose.yaml and put substituted values in a file named .env with restrictive filesystem permissions. For deployments that support Docker secrets, store passwords as secrets rather than ordinary environment values; Docker documents the Swarm secret mechanism at Docker secrets documentation. The phpMyAdmin Docker project documents environment configuration and secret-file variants at its official repository. Whichever method you choose, make sure the WordPress and phpMyAdmin containers receive credentials that actually exist in the database.

Environment variables used to initialize MySQL are normally applied only when the data directory is empty. If the named volume already contains an initialized database, changing MYSQL_PASSWORD or MYSQL_USER will not rewrite existing accounts. Change the account inside the database with appropriate administrative access, or remove and recreate the data volume only when destroying the existing site is acceptable.
Persistence: what survives container replacement
Database volume
db:/var/lib/mysql stores the database files in a named volume. Removing and recreating the db container does not remove that volume, so tables and users remain. The WordPress Compose sample documents this named-volume approach for persistent database state (Docker’s WordPress sample).
WordPress volume
wordpress:/var/www/html preserves uploaded media, themes, plugins, and WordPress files when the application container is replaced. phpMyAdmin does not need its own data volume for ordinary use because it is an administrative client; its configuration comes from the Compose environment.
Named volume versus bind mount
Named volumes are managed by Docker and are a straightforward default for a local stack. Bind mounts place files at a path you choose on the host, which can simplify direct inspection or backup but introduces host permissions and path-management concerns. Whichever method you use, back up the database contents rather than assuming that a container image is a backup. Never run docker compose down -v casually: the -v option removes named volumes and can erase the site’s database and files.

Choosing ports and limiting exposure

For a local development machine, publishing 8080 is convenient. A published port can be reachable by other machines depending on the host firewall and network, so do not treat localhost wording as an access-control guarantee. If the stack is reachable from the internet, place phpMyAdmin behind HTTPS and an additional authentication layer, restrict source IP addresses where possible, and avoid exposing it on an unrestricted address. phpMyAdmin’s setup guidance describes its web-server exposure, and its configuration documentation explains the arbitrary-server option (setup documentation; configuration documentation).
Fixed database host or arbitrary-server login
Fixed PMA_HOST (recommended for this stack)
With PMA_HOST: db, the login form is tied to the database service in your Compose project. This is predictable, keeps the network target inside the project, and avoids asking users to type a host that should not change.

phpMyAdmin can be configured with PMA_ARBITRARY=1 to let users enter arbitrary database hosts on the login form. That is useful for an administrative gateway serving intentionally different database servers, but it expands the destinations users can attempt to reach. Leave it disabled for a single WordPress project unless users genuinely need that choice.
MySQL and MariaDB considerations
phpMyAdmin is designed to administer MySQL-compatible servers, while the WordPress image accepts a database host and credentials rather than embedding a particular server in the application. If you replace mysql:8.0 with a MariaDB image, keep the service name, credentials, and database name aligned and verify compatibility for the image versions you select. The decisive Compose setting for phpMyAdmin remains the database service hostname in PMA_HOST; do not point it at the published WordPress or database host port from inside the network.

Troubleshooting connection and login failures
“Cannot connect to MySQL server” or an unknown host
- Check that
PMA_HOSTexactly matches the database service key, including spelling and capitalization. - Confirm both services are launched from the same Compose project and therefore share its network.
- Run
docker compose psanddocker compose logs db phpmyadminto identify a stopped database or an initialization error. - Do not use
localhostunless the database is deliberately in the phpMyAdmin container.
“Access denied for user”
- Compare the phpMyAdmin login with
MYSQL_USERandMYSQL_PASSWORD. - Compare WordPress’s
WORDPRESS_DB_USER,WORDPRESS_DB_PASSWORD, andWORDPRESS_DB_NAMEwith the database values. - If the volume predates your current Compose file, remember that initialization variables do not retroactively change existing accounts. Reset or alter the database user deliberately rather than deleting data as a first response.
The browser cannot open localhost:8080
- Check
docker compose psfor a running phpMyAdmin container and confirm the published port shown there. - Look for a host-port collision. Change the left side of the mapping to an unused port, such as
8090:80, then rundocker compose up -dagain. - Use the correct URL, including the changed port, and check the host firewall if accessing from another machine.
The database appears empty
Verify that you are connected to the intended service and database name. A new named volume creates a new database instance; an old volume may contain the existing site under a different database name. Inspect the database list in phpMyAdmin and review the db service logs before changing or deleting volumes.
Useful lifecycle commands
After editing the file, docker compose up -d applies the configuration while keeping existing volumes. To follow startup output, use docker compose logs -f db phpmyadmin. To stop containers without deleting data, run docker compose down; starting again with docker compose up -d reuses the named volumes. Before upgrades, export the database from phpMyAdmin or with a database dump and verify that your backup can be restored. Treat image updates as an operational change: review the selected image tags, test the stack, and keep a rollback path for the database volume.

Recommended production checklist
- Use a fixed, tested phpMyAdmin image tag instead of depending blindly on a moving tag.
- Keep database passwords out of committed YAML; use a protected
.envfile or Docker secrets where supported. - Use named volumes or deliberately managed bind mounts, and schedule database backups.
- Publish phpMyAdmin only where administrators need it; otherwise keep it on the private Compose network.
- Require HTTPS and an additional authentication layer for any public deployment.
- Restrict source IPs when possible and leave
PMA_ARBITRARYdisabled unless arbitrary hosts are a real requirement. - Confirm
PMA_HOST, database credentials, and network membership after every Compose-file change.
For the common local WordPress case, the essential configuration is three lines: add the phpMyAdmin service, set PMA_HOST to the database service name, and map an available host port to container port 80. Everything else—credentials, persistence, and exposure controls—determines whether that basic connection remains safe and reliable.
