adftp.dll is an Autodesk application file, not a Windows component. When adftp.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest repair is to restore the Autodesk product that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file is identified as AdFTP FTP Shell Extension and belongs to the AutoCAD FTP Shell Extension component developed by Autodesk Inc. It is associated with older AutoCAD-era software and other AutoCAD-based Autodesk products. The filename alone cannot identify the exact Autodesk release installed on your computer.
What the adftp.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “This application failed to start because adftp.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because adftp.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “Error loading adftp.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load adftp.dll.”
- “The file adftp.dll is missing or corrupted.”
These messages usually mean that an Autodesk executable tried to load the FTP shell extension and Windows could not complete the request.
That can happen because:
- The Autodesk installation is incomplete or damaged.
- An upgrade or uninstall removed the file.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- The application is calling an incompatible or incorrect copy.
- The file exists, but another dependency required by it is missing.
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that adftp.dll itself is absent. It can also indicate a missing dependency.
#1 Best Overall
Before repairing anything
Do not download adftp.dll from a random DLL website. A standalone file may contain malware, belong to another Autodesk release, use the wrong architecture, or fail because the actual problem is a missing dependency. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can also make troubleshooting harder.
Close AutoCAD and other Autodesk applications. Write down:
- The full error message
- The Autodesk program that displays it
- Whether the program is an older or current release
- Whether the problem started after an update, uninstall, cleanup, or antivirus alert
Then work through the fixes below in order.
1. Repair the Autodesk product
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution when an older AutoCAD installation still exists.
Classic Autodesk installer
- Press
Windowsand type Control Panel. - Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select it and choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows when finished.
- Start AutoCAD again.
If the error disappears, the installer restored the missing application files.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If Repair fails:
- Return to Programs and Features.
- Select the same Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Reinstall, if offered.
- Complete the installation and restart the computer.
Newer Autodesk installation technology
Some Autodesk products do not provide a Repair option. In that case, uninstall and reinstall the affected product using the original Autodesk installer or the installer available through your Autodesk account.
For current Windows versions:
- Press
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find the Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu or the product entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the same product and release from an official Autodesk installation source.
Do not install a different AutoCAD release merely because it is available. An older program may require files and dependencies from its own release.
2. Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can remove or quarantine an application file after a detection or a change to the Autodesk installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item that refers to AutoCAD, Autodesk, or
adftp.dll.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that:

- The detected file was inside the legitimate Autodesk installation folder.
- The Autodesk product was installed from a trusted source.
- The detection does not identify a different executable or a suspicious location.
Reinstalling the Autodesk product is preferable to restoring an isolated DLL because it replaces the complete, matching application component. If antivirus repeatedly removes the file after reinstalling, leave protection enabled and investigate the detection with Autodesk or your security vendor.
3. Confirm that the Autodesk program still exists
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Sometimes the error appears after AutoCAD has already been removed. An obsolete shortcut, startup entry, file association, or shell extension may still attempt to launch an Autodesk component.
Check whether the application is installed:
- Open Settings with
Windows + I. - Select Apps.
- Search Installed apps for AutoCAD or the relevant Autodesk product.
- Also check Control Panel > Programs and Features.
If the product is no longer installed and you do not need it, remove obsolete launch points:
- Delete old desktop and Start menu shortcuts.
- Remove an obsolete pinned taskbar shortcut.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an Autodesk entry that points to a missing program.
- Check the properties of any shortcut that still produces the error.
Do not restore adftp.dll just to support software you no longer use. If an incomplete Autodesk removal remains, uninstall the product normally. Autodesk also provides a clean-uninstall procedure for cases where normal removal leaves a broken installer state, but a clean uninstall can remove other Autodesk products, licensing information, registry entries, and residual files. Use it only when removing the Autodesk software is acceptable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors4. Check the file path and architecture
Time needed: 10 minutes
A file with the correct name can still be the wrong file.
If you find adftp.dll on the computer:
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General and Details tabs.
- Note its location, description, publisher information, and file version.
- Compare the location with the Autodesk program that is producing the error.
An application DLL normally belongs in the Autodesk program’s own directory or another application-specific directory. It does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 merely because it has a.dll` extension.
Older AutoCAD-era applications may be 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit application cannot be repaired reliably with an arbitrary 64-bit replacement, and a DLL from another Autodesk release may have incompatible dependencies. Restore the file through the exact Autodesk installer instead of mixing files between product versions.
If the file exists but the error remains, the issue may be:
Rank #3
- A missing dependency
- An incorrect search path
- A damaged Autodesk installation record
- A mismatched application release
- A corrupted user profile or configuration
Reinstalling the owning product is safer than moving the DLL manually.
5. Do not use regsvr32 as a generic fix
Time needed: 2 minutes
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It does not restore a missing file, repair an Autodesk installation, or install dependencies.
There is no reliable evidence that adftp.dll should be registered as an ActiveX or COM component. Running a command such as:
regsvr32 adftp.dll
may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not prove that Windows is damaged.

For an ordinary missing adftp.dll message, repair or reinstall Autodesk instead.
6. Install a Visual C++ runtime only when the error names it
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
adftp.dll is an Autodesk application component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Installing Visual C++ will not normally restore it.
A runtime repair is relevant only if the full error identifies another missing file, such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dll- Another clearly named Microsoft runtime DLL
Use Microsoft’s Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install the architecture required by the affected application. A 32-bit application commonly requires the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.

Do not remove older redistributables merely because a newer package is installed. Different applications can depend on different runtime versions.
7. Repair Windows components only when other Windows problems exist
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
adftp.dll is not documented as a protected Windows system file. Therefore, DISM and System File Checker are secondary checks, not the primary repair.
Use them when you also see Windows Update failures, damaged built-in applications, or multiple unrelated Windows programs failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Autodesk repair or reinstall.
Microsoft documents DISM for repairing the Windows component store and SFC for checking protected Windows resources. See Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance and System File Checker documentation.
Running these commands repeatedly will not recreate an Autodesk application file if the Autodesk installation is the problem.
If you prefer not to hunt through Windows repair results and repeat SFC/DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what its repair process identifies; its free scan shows what is wrong, while repair is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix when adftp.dll belongs to that installation.
8. Update drivers only when the failure points to a driver
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A graphics or storage driver is not the normal cause of a missing Autodesk application DLL. Consider driver work only if AutoCAD also crashes with display-driver errors, Device Manager shows a warning, or the problem began immediately after a driver change.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and relevant storage or chipset categories.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For graphics hardware, use the device manufacturer’s official support channel when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Do not expect a driver update alone to restore adftp.dll.

Manually checking every hardware model and matching driver package can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. For this file, repairing the Autodesk installation is still the primary fix.

Time needed: 20–40 minutes
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.
Best Value
- Press
Windows + R. - Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press
Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally replace an Autodesk installation as reliably as a reinstall. Use it when the timing strongly points to a recent system change, then repair Autodesk afterward if the error remains. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process and limitations.
Common causes of adftp.dll errors
| Cause | What usually happened | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Autodesk installation | A product file was removed or altered | Repair or reinstall Autodesk |
| Interrupted upgrade | The program was updated incompletely | Reinstall the exact product release |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software isolated the file | Review Protection History, then reinstall |
| Wrong DLL | A file from another release was copied in | Remove it and restore through Autodesk |
| Missing dependency | The named file exists but cannot load | Reinstall Autodesk and inspect the full error |
| Obsolete software | AutoCAD was removed but a shortcut remains | Remove the obsolete launcher or entry |
| Windows corruption | Several unrelated Windows components fail | Run DISM, then SFC |
FAQ
Is adftp.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Autodesk’s AutoCAD FTP Shell Extension. It is not a standard Windows, DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ system component.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact product or release. It is associated with older AutoCAD-era software and other AutoCAD-based Autodesk products. Autodesk Building Systems 2004 installation inventories have also listed the file.
Should I copy adftp.dll to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not general-purpose storage locations for application DLLs. Put the file back through the Autodesk installer that owns it.
Should I register adftp.dll?
Usually not. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and there is no reliable evidence that this file requires COM registration.
Why does Windows say the module cannot be found when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the file may be incompatible, or the calling application may be using an incorrect path. Reinstalling the exact Autodesk product is safer than searching for individual dependencies.

Usually no. Remove obsolete shortcuts, startup entries, or incomplete Autodesk remnants instead. Restoring a file for an application you no longer use can leave the underlying problem unresolved.
When should I use SFC or DISM?
Use them when multiple Windows features are failing or Windows itself appears corrupted. They are not the first fix for a missing Autodesk application file.
What if reinstalling Autodesk does not work?
Record the complete error, the executable path, Autodesk product and release, adftp.dll path if present, Windows version, and any antivirus detection. The remaining issue may be a missing dependency, unsupported legacy software, or a damaged user profile. At that point, contact Autodesk support with those details.
