Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →You may see “pa24res.dll was not found,” “pa24res.dll is missing,” “Error loading pa24res.dll,” or “The file pa24res.dll is not designed to run on Windows.”
The safe fix for a pa24res.dll error is usually to repair or reinstall the affected legacy printer driver, not to download the DLL by itself.
What is pa24res.dll?
pa24res.dll is identified in historical Windows file metadata as “Pansonic 24 Pin Printer Driver.” “Pansonic” appears to be a misspelling of Panasonic, the printer manufacturer the file is associated with.
The file belongs to the legacy Windows printer-driver stack. It is a printer resource DLL, which means it can contain driver-specific resources such as localized text, icons, fonts, and other information used by the printer package. Microsoft explains the role of printer resource DLLs in its documentation on resource DLLs in printer minidrivers.

Historical public inventories associate the file with a Panasonic 24-pin printer package and the prnpa001.inf driver installation file. Related files may include:
PA24W9X.DLLPA9RES.DLLPA24RES.DLL.mui
These associations come from historical file inventories rather than a current Microsoft download page. Versions, paths, and file details can vary between Windows builds and printer packages.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET assembly, or general-purpose application library. If a game or unrelated application asks for pa24res.dll, the request is unusual and should be investigated rather than answered with a DLL download.
Why is pa24res.dll missing?
The most likely causes are:
- A Panasonic printer driver installation is damaged or incomplete.
- An old printer driver was removed during a Windows upgrade or printer migration.
- The installed driver does not match the Windows architecture or printer model.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- Windows component or protected-file corruption affected the driver package.
- An old installer or application is referencing a driver file that is no longer installed.
- The disk or file system has errors.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate an incompatible architecture, damaged binary, obsolete driver package, or malware. It does not prove that the file merely needs to be copied into System32.

First, identify what is actually failing
Before changing Windows files, determine whether the error is connected to printing.
Record these details:
- The complete error text
- The program or executable displaying it
- The exact printer model
- Your Windows edition, version, build, and system architecture
- The file path shown in the error or antivirus alert
- Whether printing fails, or only one program reports the DLL
- Whether the problem started after an update, upgrade, driver installation, or antivirus event
If printing works normally and only an unrelated program requests pa24res.dll, do not assume the printer is the cause. A stale installer reference, broken application, or suspicious executable may be responsible.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the affected printer
This is the best first repair when the error appears during printing, printer setup, or a program that communicates with the printer.
Remove the printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the printer clears its device entry, but it may not remove every old driver package. That cleanup is covered below if reinstalling does not help.
Add the printer again
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for the printer.
- Select the printer when it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Print a test page from the printer’s settings.
If Windows does not find the printer, select the option to add it manually. For a local printer, choose the appropriate port and manufacturer driver. Microsoft also documents using Windows Update from the driver-selection screen to load additional printer drivers. Use that option when it is available.
The repair worked if the printer installs without the DLL error and a test page prints successfully. If Windows installs the printer but the same error returns, continue with Windows Update and driver cleanup rather than copying pa24res.dll manually.
Fix 2: Install the driver through Windows Update
Windows Update is Microsoft’s preferred source for compatible printer drivers. It may supply an inbox driver or a matching package without requiring you to locate an individual DLL.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if that section is present.
- Install a printer-related update that matches your hardware.
- Restart Windows.
- Try printing again.
You can also reinstall the printer and select Windows Update when Windows displays its list of printer manufacturers and models.
Do not install a driver only because its description contains “Panasonic” or “24 Pin.” Confirm the exact printer model and choose a package intended for your version and architecture of Windows.

When manually comparing drivers, remember that 32-bit and 64-bit packages are not interchangeable. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver directory, or place copies in both System32 and SysWOW64 as a guess. Windows chooses these locations according to the driver package and the process architecture.
Manually hunting through old driver versions can be slow, especially when several machines have different printer packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated or missing drivers and show what needs attention; its repair and driver installation functions require the full version, and it is not required for this repair.
Fix 3: Install the exact Panasonic printer package
If Windows Update has no suitable driver, identify the printer’s exact model and search Panasonic’s official support and download portal. Do not search only for pa24res.dll.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the model printed on the device or its original documentation. A 24-pin printer description is not enough to identify a compatible package. Install only a driver intended for that model and Windows architecture.
A manufacturer package may contain:
- The printer INF file
- The resource DLL
- Dependent files
- Driver configuration
- A catalog signature
- Registry and spooler configuration
That is why installing the complete package is safer than replacing one DLL.
If Panasonic no longer provides a compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 package, possible administrative alternatives include:
- A compatible Windows inbox printer driver
- A generic text or impact-printer driver
- Printing through a supported print server
- Keeping the printer attached to an older supported Windows environment
- Replacing unsupported hardware when reliable operation is required
Do not assume that a Vista-era package will work correctly on Windows 11. An installer that completes without an error may still produce a driver that cannot load or print.
Fix 4: Clean an old printer-driver package
Windows can retain an older driver even after the printer is removed. If reinstalling simply restores the same broken package, remove the obsolete driver from the print server properties.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Select any printer once so that printer-management options appear.
- Select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old printer driver associated with the affected device.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the printer through Windows Update or the manufacturer’s complete package.
Only remove a driver after confirming that no other working printer depends on it. On an office computer or print server, check the other queues first.
If Windows says the driver is in use, stop printing jobs, restart the Print Spooler service, and try again:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Locate Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Return to Print server properties and repeat the removal.
Do not delete arbitrary files from printer-driver directories. The INF, catalog, registry configuration, and dependent files must remain consistent.

Device Manager can reveal whether Windows sees the printer or a related device as having a driver problem.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if necessary, Universal Serial Bus controllers or Other devices.
- Look for the affected printer or a device with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Read the status on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If Windows cannot find one, use the manufacturer’s verified package instead.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update and the Roll Back Driver button is available, record the current driver details first, then use Roll Back Driver. Restart Windows and test printing.
Device Manager is useful for identifying a device and updating or rolling back its driver. It does not make a standalone DLL download safe, and it may not expose every file in a legacy printer package.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use system repair tools when Windows itself shows signs of corruption, multiple protected files are failing, or the error appeared alongside broader system problems. They are not guaranteed to restore a particular third-party printer package.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall or test the printer again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store used as a source for system repairs. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies when a valid replacement is available.
Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: no protected-file corruption was found.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: review the CBS log or seek further Windows repair assistance.
Repeating DISM and SFC without knowing whether the printer package is damaged rarely resolves an obsolete manufacturer driver. If you want a guided scan that identifies common repair issues instead of manually repeating commands, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it detects; repairs require the full version and it is optional, not a substitute for reinstalling the correct printer package.
Fix 7: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a driver resource DLL if it is damaged, unsigned, or located somewhere unexpected.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
pa24res.dllor the printer installer. - Check the detected file path and detection reason.
- Do not restore the file solely because its name matches the error.
- If it is in a legitimate Windows printer-driver directory and belongs to the installed package, verify the printer package and digital signature before taking action.
- If it is in a Downloads folder, a temporary folder, a user-writable directory, or an unrelated application folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
If antivirus removed a legitimate file, reinstall the complete printer package from Windows Update or the manufacturer instead of restoring an isolated DLL. If the file is unsigned, unrelated to printing, or repeatedly reappears, treat the event as a security issue.
Why downloading pa24res.dll separately is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- Malware disguised as a system file
- A file from the wrong Windows generation
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A mismatched language resource
- A file with incompatible dependencies
- An unsigned or modified binary
Even an authentic copy may not fix the underlying problem. The printer INF file, catalog signature, registry settings, spooler configuration, and related resource files may still be missing.
Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a printer-driver directory based only on an online instruction. The correct directory depends on the complete driver package and the process architecture.
Use Windows Update, the printer’s exact manufacturer package, or a supported alternative driver instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes regsvr32 repair pa24res.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer. Printer resource DLLs are normally loaded as resources by the printer driver package. They are not generally COM components that users should register manually.
Running:
regsvr32 pa24res.dll
may produce an error such as a missing entry point or an architecture mismatch. That does not prove the DLL is missing or that Windows needs a different copy.
Use regsvr32 only when documentation for the specific application or component explicitly says that its DLL is self-registering. It is not a universal DLL repair command. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance explains these limitations.
Legacy printer and unsupported Windows versions
The file is associated with an older 24-pin printer-driver package. Modern Windows may not support every package from the Windows 2000, XP, or Vista era.

If the exact Panasonic driver will not install:
- Confirm the printer model.
- Check Windows Update for an inbox driver.
- Check Panasonic’s official support portal for the model.
- Confirm whether the package supports your Windows architecture.
- Test a compatible generic text or impact-printer driver if the printer’s features permit it.
- Consider a print server or older supported Windows system for legacy hardware.
- Avoid forcing an unsigned or incompatible package.
If the printer is no longer supported and dependable printing is essential, replacing the printer may be more practical than maintaining an obsolete driver.

When to use System Restore
Use System Restore when the issue began after a known driver installation, Windows change, or software migration and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can remove a recent driver or configuration change, but it may not provide a current compatible Panasonic package. Back up important work before using it.
How to tell whether the file is legitimate
A legitimate pa24res.dll should make sense in context:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- It is associated with an installed printer package.
- Its path is within a Windows-managed printer-driver location.
- It is installed alongside an INF file and related driver resources.
- Its digital signature and publisher information are consistent with the package.
- The requesting process is a printer service, spooler component, or printer utility.
Be cautious if:
- The file is in Downloads, Temp, AppData, or a game folder.
- It is unsigned or has an unexpected publisher.
- A game or unrelated application requests it.
- The file appeared without a printer installation.
- Replacing it causes new security warnings or crashes.
Scan suspicious files and identify the executable that requested them. Do not whitelist or restore a questionable file simply to make an error disappear.
Frequently asked questions
Is “Pansonic” a real product name?
It is the spelling used in historical metadata for the file description. Panasonic is the likely intended manufacturer. Treat the spelling as file metadata, not proof of a current Panasonic product or support package.
Is pa24res.dll a Microsoft or Panasonic file?
Historical metadata associates it with the Microsoft Windows operating system and Microsoft as publisher, while its function points to a Panasonic-related legacy printer package. Microsoft documents the printer-driver architecture, but no current Microsoft page directly identifies this filename.
Which Panasonic printer models use it?
The available file information does not establish a verified model list. Identify the exact printer model before selecting a driver.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere should pa24res.dll be installed?
There is no single safe universal path. Printer resource DLLs are installed into driver-package directories selected by the INF installation. Do not use System32 or SysWOW64 as a generic destination.
Will SFC restore this exact file?
Not necessarily. SFC can repair protected Windows files when a valid component source exists, but it may not restore an obsolete or manufacturer-specific printer package. Reinstall the printer driver when the failure is isolated to printing.
Should I use Windows Features?
No Windows Feature normally needs to be enabled just to restore this printer resource DLL. Use Windows Features only when a separate, clearly identified Windows component requires it. Do not enable unrelated features as a DLL repair attempt.
What if only one program reports the error?
Check which executable is requesting the file. If printing works and the program is unrelated to printing, repair or reinstall that program and scan for unwanted software rather than installing a printer DLL.
What information should I give support?
Provide the Windows version and build, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, exact printer model, complete error text, reported file path, affected executable, driver package name if shown, and whether printing fails or only a particular application reports the error.
