The 60-second answer
adobexmpfiles.dll is the Windows filename commonly shown for AdobeXMPFiles.dll, an Adobe library used to read and write XMP metadata in documents, images, video, and other media.
It belongs with the Adobe application that installed it. It is not a Windows system file and should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The safest fix is:
- Identify which Adobe application is failing.
- Check whether antivirus quarantined the file.
- Repair or reinstall that Adobe application using Creative Cloud or its original Adobe installer.
- Repair Microsoft Visual C++ only if the error identifies a missing runtime dependency.
- Avoid DLL download sites, manual replacement, and
regsvr32.
What causes the error
The file may genuinely be missing, but the message does not always identify the real cause. Common possibilities include:
- An incomplete or corrupted Adobe update
- A failed Adobe installation or uninstall
- Antivirus quarantine or deletion
- A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit Adobe component
- A missing Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A damaged Adobe user profile or installer record
- A dependency of
AdobeXMPFiles.dllthat cannot load - Windows component corruption affecting several unrelated programs
Adobe uses this library in more than one product. Public Adobe diagnostic and crash records place it in application folders belonging to After Effects, Premiere Rush, Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements. A copy from one Adobe product is not automatically compatible with another.
Step 1: Identify the Adobe application that owns the file
Do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL. First determine which application displays the error.
Look at the title bar or the first line of the message. It may name Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Premiere Rush, Photoshop Elements, or another Adobe application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf the message does not identify the product:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Look for the Adobe executable that remains open or appears briefly when the error occurs.
- Right-click it and select Open file location.
- Note the complete folder path.
The correct location should be inside the Adobe application’s own installation directory. For example, an Adobe installation may contain a path similar to:
C:Program FilesAdobeAdobe After Effects 2020Support FilesAdobeXMPFiles.dll
The exact folder depends on the product and version. Do not treat the filename alone as proof that a file found elsewhere belongs to that application.
If the file is in System32, SysWOW64, Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated program directory, do not use it to repair Adobe. Remove or quarantine suspicious copies with your security software and restore the application through its installer instead.
Step 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a DLL after an update or after scanning an Adobe installation.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
AdobeXMPFiles.dll. - Expand the event and inspect the file path.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- It is inside the expected Adobe application folder.
- The detection clearly corresponds to the Adobe installation.
- The file has a valid Adobe digital signature.
- You are confident the Adobe installation itself is genuine.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to make the application start. After restoring a legitimate file, repair or reinstall the Adobe application so its files and signatures are refreshed together.
If the file was quarantined from a temporary folder or an unfamiliar location, leave it quarantined and reinstall Adobe from Creative Cloud or the original Adobe installer.
Step 3: Repair or reinstall the Adobe application
This is the most likely solution because it restores the matching DLL, dependent files, architecture, and application registration together.

Creative Cloud installation
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop application.
- Select Apps.
- Choose All Apps.
- Find the Adobe application that shows the error.
- Select the More actions button, shown as three dots.
- Choose Uninstall.
- If Creative Cloud offers to preserve preferences, presets, plug-ins, or settings, choose the option appropriate for your backup situation.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Creative Cloud again.
- Install the same Adobe application.
If the application is listed but Creative Cloud itself behaves incorrectly, sign out of Creative Cloud, restart Windows, sign back in, and retry the repair or reinstall process.
For an older Adobe product, use its original installer when available. Preserve old installers, plug-ins, project files, presets, and settings before using a cleanup utility. Older products may not remain available through current Creative Cloud installers.

How to confirm the repair worked
Start the Adobe application normally and open the project or file that previously triggered the error. A successful repair should remove the missing-file message and allow the application to reach its normal workspace.
If the same error returns immediately after reinstalling, note whether:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The file is present in the application’s folder.
- Antivirus removes it again.
- The message names a different DLL.
- The application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Event Viewer identifies a faulting module.
Those details determine the next step.
Step 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
AdobeXMPFiles versions are application-specific. A 32-bit Adobe application needs its compatible 32-bit library, while a 64-bit application needs its compatible 64-bit library.
On 64-bit Windows, both types of Adobe applications can exist at the same time. Do not copy a DLL from one installation into another merely because the filenames match.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose About.
- Review System type.
To check an application’s architecture, use the product documentation or inspect its installation folder and installed program information. If you are uncertain, let the Adobe installer select the correct files.
Known file metadata shows that AdobeXMPFiles builds have existed in both 32-bit and 64-bit forms, with different versions and sizes. These values are not an official compatibility table, so do not select a replacement by matching a number found on an unofficial website.
Step 5: Repair a missing Microsoft Visual C++ dependency
Sometimes the DLL exists, but Windows reports:
The specified module could not be found.
That message can mean a dependent DLL is missing. The named Adobe file may be present and readable while one of its Microsoft runtime dependencies cannot load.
Look for errors mentioning names such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dll- Another
VCRUNTIMEorMSVCPfile
Install or repair the official Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable packages from Microsoft. Match the package to the Adobe application’s architecture:
- Install x64 for a 64-bit Adobe application.
- Install x86 for a 32-bit Adobe application.
- On 64-bit Windows, both packages may be needed when both application types are installed.
Restart Windows after installation and test Adobe again. Installing the latest runtime is not a guaranteed fix when no Visual C++ dependency is involved.
If the error remains, repair or reinstall the Adobe application rather than replacing AdobeXMPFiles.dll by hand.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Step 6: Inspect the crash in Event Viewer
Use Event Viewer when Adobe crashes without a clear missing-file dialog.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time of the Adobe crash.
- Record the faulting application, faulting module, exception code, and file path.
If the faulting module is AdobeXMPFiles.dll, repair the Adobe application first. If another module is named, the Adobe DLL may only be part of the loading chain.
A graphics driver is relevant only when Event Viewer or the Adobe crash report also identifies the display driver, or when several Adobe applications show rendering-related crashes. It is not a general fix for a missing Adobe metadata library.
When hunting through several manufacturers’ driver pages is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional. Reinstalling the Adobe application remains the definitive fix when this specific DLL belongs to that application.
Step 7: Repair Windows components only when other programs also fail
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They normally do not restore an Adobe DLL inside an Adobe application folder.

- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Adobe application again.
If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart and retest. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
Do not expect these commands to recreate AdobeXMPFiles.dll in an Adobe folder. Repair Adobe separately.

Manually checking Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM can be time-consuming when you do not know what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues; its free scan shows detected problems, while repair through the full version is optional. It is not required, and Adobe repair or reinstall remains the correct solution for an Adobe-specific DLL.
Why regsvr32 is normally wrong
Do not run this as a general fix:
regsvr32 AdobeXMPFiles.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by COM or ActiveX components. AdobeXMPFiles.dll is normally a private library loaded by an Adobe executable, not a component that users register in Windows.
Running regsvr32 may produce an entry-point error and does not restore missing dependencies, Adobe installation records, or the correct application version.
Avoid manual DLL downloads and System32 copying
Downloading adobexmpfiles.dll from a random DLL website is risky because the file may be:

It may also leave the original damaged installation untouched. Copying it into System32 can create DLL search-order and security problems.
Use Creative Cloud or the original Adobe installer instead. The only reasonable offline exception is controlled recovery from the exact, verified, digitally signed Adobe installer for the same product build, placed in the application’s original folder. Reinstalling remains safer.
Frequently asked questions
Is adobexmpfiles.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Adobe application library and should normally be located in an Adobe product’s installation directory, not System32 or SysWOW64.
Which Adobe program uses it?
More than one Adobe product can use it. The full executable name and DLL path identify the owning application. Repair that application first.
The file exists. Why does Windows still say it is missing?
The error may refer to a dependency that cannot load. Repair Adobe, check Visual C++ runtime errors, and inspect Event Viewer.
Can I copy the file from Photoshop to After Effects?
No. Different Adobe products and versions may require different builds, dependencies, and architectures.
Should I run regsvr32?
Normally, no. This DLL is generally a private Adobe runtime module, not a COM or ActiveX component intended for registration.
Should I reinstall DirectX or .NET?
Not as a first-line remedy. Those components are not the normal cause of an Adobe XMP library loading error.
What should I report if repair fails?
Record the Adobe product and version, the complete DLL path, exact error text, Windows architecture, whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit, recent updates or antivirus events, and the Event Viewer faulting module and exception code. This information distinguishes a missing file from a dependency, architecture, or crash problem.
