adtschema.dll: Why Event Viewer Cannot Find the Audit Schema

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

adtschema.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called the Security Audit Schema DLL. If adtschema.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file supplies event-message and audit-schema resources for the Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing provider. Windows uses those resources to turn Security log event data into readable descriptions in Event Viewer. It is not a Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, game, or general application runtime file.

adtschema.dll: version and location

Item Expected information
File adtschema.dll
Description Security Audit Schema DLL
Publisher Microsoft Corporation
Normal path %SystemRoot%System32adtschema.dll
Related provider Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing
32-bit location on 64-bit Windows Usually %SystemRoot%SysWOW64adtschema.dll

The exact file version depends on your Windows build, architecture, language resources, and servicing history. Historical Windows entries include versions such as 10.0.17763.1, 10.0.17134.1, and 10.0.14393.0, but those are not a current download catalogue or a universal compatibility list.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit counterparts. Do not replace one with the other.

Which error are you seeing?

There are two different problems commonly described as an adtschema.dll error.

Event Viewer cannot display an event description

You may see a message like:

The description for Event ID 4624 from source
Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing cannot be found.
Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer
or the installation is corrupted.

This usually means Event Viewer cannot access the message resources needed to render the event text. It does not automatically mean Windows auditing has stopped. The underlying event data may still be present.

A program says the DLL is missing

Generic loader messages include:

The program can't start because adtschema.dll is missing from your computer.

or:

Error loading adtschema.dll. The specified module could not be found.

A third-party application explicitly naming this Windows file may have a damaged installation, a bad installer, or a damaged Windows component. There is no verified mainstream game dependency that normally requires you to copy this file into its installation folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, check whether the file exists

Do this before downloading anything.

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type cmd.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
where /r "%windir%" adtschema.dll
dir "%windir%System32adtschema.dll"
dir "%windir%SysWOW64adtschema.dll"

On 64-bit Windows, the SysWOW64 command may find a 32-bit counterpart. On 32-bit Windows, that directory may not exist.

If the file appears in an unexpected application folder, do not assume it is legitimate. Check its digital signature:

  1. Open File Explorer and browse to the file.
  2. Right-click adtschema.dll.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open Digital Signatures.
  5. Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and inspect the signature details.

An unexpected path, invalid Microsoft signature, or suspicious behavior warrants a Microsoft Defender scan rather than a manual replacement.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

A failed or incomplete update can leave system components inconsistent. Windows Update is the safest first repair because it obtains files matched to your installed build.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. On some Windows 10 installations, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
  4. Click Check for updates.
  5. Install all available updates.
  6. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  7. Test Event Viewer or the affected program again.

If the error began immediately after a Windows update, note the update and build number before changing anything else. Do not install an older adtschema.dll from a version list.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

Use this when the file is absent, corrupted, unsigned, or Event Viewer still cannot render Security event descriptions.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired store to verify and restore protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.

  1. Open Start and type cmd.
  2. Right-click Command Prompt.
  3. Choose Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Check the file again:
dir "%windir%System32adtschema.dll"

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, test the original error. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run the DISM command again after connecting to the internet, then run SFC once more.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps: its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the normal repair path for this Microsoft component.

For more detail on the supported sequence, see Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a damaged or falsely detected system file.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an entry involving adtschema.dll.
  6. Check the recorded path and detection details.

Do not restore the file merely because its name matches. Restore it only when the path is the expected Windows directory, the Microsoft signature is valid, and you have good reason to believe the detection is false. If the entry is uncertain, leave it quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined threat can cause Defender to detect it again. Use the Protection History documentation if you need to review the available actions.

Fix 4: Determine whether the problem is remote

The error may not be on the computer where you are reading it.

A SIEM, event-forwarding host, or log exporter may be collecting Security events from another Windows computer. If it tries to render those events locally, it may need access to the source computer’s message DLL and matching language resources. A remote collector can therefore report that it cannot load a path such as:

\ComputerNameC$WindowsSystem32adtschema.dll

An access-denied error does not necessarily mean the file is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check these points:

  • Does Event Viewer fail directly on the Windows computer that generated the event?
  • Does the error occur only in the SIEM or log collector?
  • Does the collector account have permission to access the remote administrative share?
  • Is the collector using matching Windows event metadata and language resources?
  • Can the collector preserve the event’s XML or raw data instead of rendering the message itself?

If the problem occurs only remotely, repair the collector’s credentials, permissions, event subscription, or rendering configuration. Do not copy a random DLL to the collector.

Fix 5: Check the Security Auditing provider registration

If Event Viewer cannot render Security events locally, inspect the provider’s message-file registration.

Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

reg query "HKLMSYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesEventLogSecurityMicrosoft-Windows-Security-Auditing" /v EventMessageFile

The value normally references:

%SystemRoot%system32adtschema.dll

If the value is missing or points to an invalid location, do not manually invent a registry entry from an online guide. Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. A damaged registry mapping is usually part of a broader servicing problem, and manual edits can make recovery harder.

Fix 6: Use a repair source if DISM cannot repair Windows

DISM may report that it could not find the source files. This can happen when the local component store is damaged and Windows cannot obtain suitable repair content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a repair source that matches your Windows edition and build, then follow Microsoft’s DISM repair-source documentation. The general form is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<repair-source> /LimitAccess

Do not guess the source path or use files from an unrelated Windows release. After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test again.

On supported Windows 11 installations, you can also use the repair reinstall option:

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Click Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every Windows installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change

If the problem started after a cleanup utility, failed update, driver installation, or other system change, System Restore may undo the change without replacing personal files.

  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select a restore point created before the error began.
  3. Review the affected programs.
  4. Click Next > Finish.

Use Microsoft’s System Restore instructions if you need to review restore-point behavior.

If System Restore is unavailable or does not resolve the problem, collect the error details and consider a Windows repair reinstall rather than manually replacing system files.

Drivers, Windows Features, and runtimes

Drivers are not a normal cause or fix for adtschema.dll. Reinstall a driver only when the complete error also identifies a device or driver problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a separate hardware issue exists:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the device and select Update driver or Uninstall device.
  5. Restart Windows and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer if required.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which drivers it identifies as stale instead of making you guess among many devices; its free scan identifies issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and drivers are not the expected repair for this Windows event-resource file.

Do not enable random Windows Features, or reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET, unless the complete error also names that feature or runtime. Those packages do not normally provide adtschema.dll.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a random website

Third-party DLL download pages can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, the wrong architecture, or a file with a misleading name. Even a genuine copy may not match your servicing state and may leave the underlying component-store problem untouched.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching repair source, or a Windows repair reinstall instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it into a game or application folder

adtschema.dll belongs in the Windows system locations used by the Security Auditing event provider. Copying it beside an executable creates an unmanaged side-by-side copy and does not repair Windows registration or message resources.

Do not use regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. adtschema.dll is an event-message and resource DLL, not a COM or ActiveX component. Registering it is not an appropriate repair.

The similarly named Active Directory schema snap-in DLL, schmmgmt.dll, is a different file. Do not confuse the two.

  • The complete error text
  • Whether it appears locally in Event Viewer or only on a remote collector
  • Windows edition, architecture, and build
  • The path found by where /r "%windir%" adtschema.dll
  • The file’s signature status
  • The Event Viewer source and event ID
  • DISM and SFC result messages
  • Whether antivirus quarantined the file
  • Whether the issue began after an update, cleanup, driver install, or application installation

This information distinguishes a missing local component from an event-rendering, permissions, or remote-collector problem.

FAQ

Is adtschema.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It is the Microsoft Security Audit Schema DLL associated with the Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing provider.

Does the error mean Windows auditing is disabled?

No. A missing event description usually means the message resources could not be loaded. The event’s underlying data may still be recorded.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not for this file alone. Those runtimes do not normally supply adtschema.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I repair the game that mentions it?

If a specific program reports the error, update or reinstall that program from its official installer after repairing Windows. There is no verified mainstream game dependency that establishes a separate adtschema.dll download requirement.

Which copy should I use on 64-bit Windows?

Use the copy supplied by Windows in the appropriate system directory. Do not substitute a 32-bit SysWOW64 file for the native System32 component, or copy a file from another Windows build.

What if DISM and SFC both fail?

Review the DISM repair-source procedure, use System Restore if the issue follows a recent change, and then use the supported Windows repair-reinstall option. A manual DLL replacement is not the next step.
