The reliable way to cache a busy website on a VPS is to use layers, not one oversized cache: let browsers and an edge network serve static files, let a reverse proxy such as NGINX cache safe public responses on the VPS, and add application or object caching only where profiling proves it is needed. Correct cache keys, explicit bypass rules, short enough TTLs, and a tested purge process matter more than any single cache-size number.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide shows how to classify content, configure Cloudflare and NGINX safely, prevent a distributed cache miss from flooding the origin, and measure whether caching is actually reducing origin work.

What a layered VPS cache does
Caching stores a response closer to the requester so the application does not have to regenerate it for every request. On a high-traffic site, the useful question is not “What is the biggest cache I can enable?” It is “Which layer should answer this request, and under what conditions is a stored response still correct?”
| Layer | Primary job | Good first targets | Main correctness risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser cache | Reuses files on the visitor’s device | Versioned images, CSS, JavaScript, fonts | Users retain an old file when URLs are not versioned or headers are too long |
| Edge cache | Serves content from geographically distributed points of presence | Static files and explicitly selected public HTML | Sharing private or user-specific content |
| VPS reverse-proxy cache | Stores upstream responses on disk and answers repeat requests without contacting the application | Public pages and APIs with stable, complete cache keys | Serving stale or cross-user content because the key or bypass rule is incomplete |
| Application or object cache | Reuses expensive database or application work before a complete HTTP response exists | Repeated, profiled queries or rendered fragments | Adding invalidation complexity without a measured bottleneck |
Cloudflare describes its edge network as caching content across globally distributed data centers. F5 NGINX describes its content cache as saving proxied responses to disk and using them to answer later clients without proxying the same content every time. Used together, the edge can absorb global repeat traffic while the VPS cache protects the application when an edge location misses.

Decide what is safe to cache before changing configuration
Begin with an inventory of URL classes. Do not enable a blanket “cache everything” rule and hope cookies or HTTP methods will protect you. Every class needs an explicit policy.
| URL or response class | Typical policy | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Immutable static assets | Cache at the browser, edge, and VPS with a long TTL when filenames are content-versioned | A new filename can represent every changed version, so old objects can safely age out |
| Public HTML | Cache only when the page is identical for all visitors; use a short or moderate TTL and a purge path | Editorial or inventory changes can make a long-lived copy misleading |
| Public API responses | Cache only documented GET or HEAD endpoints whose query parameters are part of the representation | Different filters, locales, or pagination values must not collide |
| Authenticated pages | Bypass shared caches | The response may contain account, permission, or billing data |
| Cart, checkout, account, and admin paths | Bypass shared caches | These workflows are user-specific and often mutate state |
| Preview, debug, or draft requests | Bypass and prevent storing the response | A preview must not replace the public representation |
| Responses carrying user-specific cookies | Bypass unless you can prove the representation is public and the cache key contains every changing dimension | Cookies are a common way to leak one visitor’s response to another |
Static assets are the safest starting point because their content is usually public and can be versioned. Cloudflare’s default behavior reflects this: static content such as images, CSS, and JavaScript is cacheable by default, while dynamic HTML is not cached by default. Treat that default as a conservative baseline, not as proof that every static URL is harmless; a generated download or private media URL still needs its own policy.

Set origin headers that describe freshness and revalidation
The application or origin should state how a response may be stored. Use Cache-Control to express public or private scope, freshness, and revalidation requirements. For resources that may change while retaining the same URL, provide an ETag or Last-Modified value so a cache can revalidate instead of downloading a complete new response. Cloudflare recommends watching revalidated and expired responses because they represent different TTL and revalidation behavior.
A practical policy is to send long-lived, public caching headers only for immutable, versioned assets; use a shorter max-age for public HTML that changes; and mark account or transactional responses private or non-cacheable. Keep the origin policy and proxy policy aligned. A longer NGINX or edge TTL cannot make a response safe if the application marks it private, and a very short origin TTL can erase the benefit of an otherwise large disk cache.
When you change a response without changing its URL, decide in advance how it will be purged or revalidated. When you can change the URL, content hashing or another version suffix reduces the need for emergency purges because old and new representations have different keys.
Design cache keys as correctness controls
A cache key identifies the representation being stored. The minimum key normally includes the request host and URI. Add a query string, cookie-derived value, language, device class, or authorization state only when that dimension actually changes the response. Omitting a changing dimension causes collisions; adding irrelevant dimensions creates needless misses and lowers the cache ratio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Host: Include the host when more than one hostname reaches the same proxy or when a response differs by hostname.
- Path: Keep the complete path, including the distinction between trailing-slash variants if your application treats them differently.
- Query string: Include arguments that select content, such as
page,sort,language, or an API filter. Remove only parameters that are proven tracking-only and normalized consistently. - Cookies: Do not vary on every cookie by default. Bypass requests with authentication or user-specific cookies unless you have a deliberate, bounded variation scheme.
- Headers: If the application varies output by
Accept-Language, encoding, or another header, either include that variation or normalize it before caching.
Write down the key dimensions for each URL class. A useful review question is: “Could two requests with this key receive different bodies?” If the answer is yes, the key is incomplete or that class should bypass shared caching.

Configure the edge layer with Cloudflare
Cloudflare’s cache controls sit in front of the VPS. Use Cache Rules to select paths or hostnames, decide whether a response is eligible, and set an edge TTL. Start with static paths and a small allowlist of public pages rather than attempting to infer safety from a broad wildcard.
Understand the query-string cache levels
| Cloudflare cache level | How query strings are treated | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| No Query String | Requests are treated without the query string | Only when query parameters cannot change the representation and you have verified that behavior |
| Ignore Query String | Query strings are ignored for eligible static file extensions | Static assets where tracking parameters should not create separate objects |
| Standard | Different query strings are different resources | The safe default for APIs, filtered pages, pagination, and other parameter-sensitive content |
Cloudflare documents “Ignore Query String” as limited to static file extensions. Do not select it for a dynamic endpoint merely because most of its parameters are tracking tags. If one parameter changes the body, collapsing all variants can return the wrong response.
Keep private and state-changing paths out
Exclude authentication, account, cart, checkout, administration, and other user-specific paths from shared edge caching. Also exclude requests with preview or debug parameters and responses that carry user-specific cookies. If a page is public despite a cookie being present, prove that the cookie cannot alter the representation before allowing it into a shared cache; otherwise, bypass is safer.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use TTL and revalidation deliberately
Set an edge TTL that matches the content’s volatility and your deployment process. A rapidly changing public page needs a shorter freshness window or a reliable purge; an immutable asset can use a longer window when its URL changes on every release. Keep ETag or Last-Modified available when revalidation is preferable to unconditional refetching.
Use Tiered Cache to reduce distributed misses
Tiered Cache creates lower and upper cache tiers. When a lower-tier location misses, it asks an upper tier before going to the VPS. This limits how many edge locations can fetch the same object directly from the origin, which is especially useful when traffic is global and a new or expired object is requested in many regions at once. Tiering does not fix an incorrect key or an unsafe rule; it only reduces duplicate origin fetches for a correctly cacheable object.
Watch cache-status outcomes
Track cache ratio and the status of requests that are hits, misses, revalidations, and expirations. A high cache ratio means more responses are served without contacting the origin, but a ratio by itself is not a success metric: a site can have a high ratio while caching the wrong representation, or a low ratio because every request is legitimately unique. Pair edge observations with VPS origin-request counts, latency, and error rate.
Configure an NGINX reverse-proxy cache on the VPS
NGINX’s disk cache has two separate resources: a metadata zone in shared memory and the response files on disk. The metadata zone indexes cached objects; it does not cap the total response bytes. The disk limit is controlled separately with max_size.

1. Define the cache path in the http context
Place proxy_cache_path in the top-level http block, not inside a server or location block. Choose a filesystem with enough space and monitor it independently from the application volume.
http {
proxy_cache_path /var/cache/nginx/site
levels=1:2
keys_zone=site_cache:100m
max_size=20g
inactive=60m
use_temp_path=off;
# server blocks follow...
}
In this example, keys_zone=site_cache:100m creates the shared metadata zone, while max_size=20g limits stored response data. The values are examples, not universal recommendations. Size them from observed object count, response size, available disk, and eviction behavior. A larger metadata zone does not allow 20 GB of response files unless the disk limit also permits it.
2. Attach the zone to a public location
Use proxy_cache in the relevant server or location block. NGINX caches GET and HEAD responses by default. Keep that default unless you have a deliberate, tested reason to cache another method; never cache state-changing methods merely to increase the hit rate.
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name www.example.test;
location / {
proxy_pass http://app_upstream;
proxy_cache site_cache;
proxy_cache_methods GET HEAD;
proxy_cache_key "$scheme$request_method$host$request_uri";
proxy_cache_valid 200 301 302 60s;
proxy_cache_valid 404 10s;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
}
}
The key above includes the scheme, method, host, and complete request URI. If your application varies by another dimension, add it only after defining and testing that variation. For example, a language selected by a cookie cannot be safely represented by this key alone; either normalize language into the URL, include a bounded language value in the key, or bypass those requests.

3. Assign status-specific freshness
proxy_cache_valid lets you use different validity periods for different statuses. A short validity for rapidly changing public responses limits staleness, while a longer validity for stable assets reduces origin work. Do not assume that a long TTL is harmless for errors: caching a temporary upstream failure can make an outage appear longer. Keep error handling and invalidation rules explicit.
4. Bypass and refuse to store unsafe requests
proxy_cache_bypass controls whether NGINX should serve a cached response for a request. proxy_no_cache controls whether the response should be stored. Use both when a request must reach the origin and its result must not become a shared object.
http {
map $http_authorization $has_auth {
default 1;
"" 0;
}
map $http_cookie $has_session_cookie {
default 0;
~*"session|logged_in|auth" 1;
}
map $arg_preview $is_preview {
default 1;
"" 0;
}
server {
location / {
proxy_pass http://app_upstream;
proxy_cache site_cache;
proxy_cache_methods GET HEAD;
proxy_cache_key "$scheme$request_method$host$request_uri";
proxy_cache_bypass $has_auth $has_session_cookie $is_preview;
proxy_no_cache $has_auth $has_session_cookie $is_preview;
}
}
}
Adapt the cookie expression to your application’s actual cookie names. A generic pattern is not a substitute for an inventory: if a personalization cookie has a different name, the bypass rule must include it; if a cookie is harmless and never changes the body, excluding it from the bypass may improve reuse. Review authorization headers, preview and debug parameters, and any application response that explicitly says not to cache.

5. Separate public locations from private workflows
It is easier to reason about a small public location than a single location containing every route. Give account, cart, checkout, administration, and authenticated API paths their own locations with caching disabled or bypassed. Keep the public cache allowlist narrow until logs show that each route is safe.
6. Expose an operational cache status
During rollout, add an internal response header such as X-Cache-Status populated from NGINX’s upstream cache status, or inspect equivalent access-log fields. Restrict diagnostic headers if they reveal internal details. The purpose is to distinguish a hit from a miss, bypass, revalidation, or expired object while you test real requests.
Prevent a miss from overwhelming the origin
A cache miss is expected; a synchronized burst of misses is the failure mode to design against. The controls below address different causes.
- Reduce the number of independent fetchers. Enable an edge tiering strategy so lower-tier locations ask an upper tier before the VPS. This is most valuable after expiry or deployment when many regions request the same object.
- Keep keys stable. Normalize tracking parameters where policy permits, and avoid varying on irrelevant cookies or headers. Otherwise, the same page is split into many objects and each variant can miss independently.
- Choose TTLs that match release behavior. A very short TTL on a popular page creates frequent re-fetches; a long TTL without purge creates stale content. Use versioned URLs for immutable assets and a documented purge or revalidation path for public HTML.
- Warm only what you can verify. After a deployment or purge, request a small, prioritized set of public URLs from representative regions and confirm the returned version before broadening the warm-up. Do not generate traffic against private or state-changing paths.
- Measure origin concurrency. Record cache hits and misses at the edge and NGINX, upstream request count, latency, and errors during expiry and deployment events. If misses rise while the origin saturates, reduce the number of variants and review TTL and tiering before simply adding more application workers.
There is no universal cache-hit percentage or traffic threshold that guarantees safety for every VPS. The useful target is site-specific: fewer origin requests for the same public workload, acceptable freshness, and no increase in correctness or error incidents.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Plan purges, deployments, and failures
Choose versioning or purge per resource
For CSS, JavaScript, images, and fonts, versioned filenames are usually the simplest deployment contract: publish the new file under a new URL, update references, and let the old object expire. For public HTML whose URL must remain stable, define a purge or short revalidation window before enabling a long TTL.
Prevent mixed releases
Deploy application code and referenced assets in an order that keeps both old and new combinations valid. If HTML points to an asset that is not yet available, a cache can preserve the failure. If old HTML remains at the edge while the VPS serves new assets, users may observe a temporary mismatch. A controlled purge or revalidation step after the new release is available reduces this window.
Know what happens when the cache is full
NGINX’s cache manager and cache loader processes manage stored objects, while max_size limits response storage. Monitor disk usage, eviction activity, and the metadata zone separately. A full disk can cause write failures even when the metadata zone has capacity; an undersized metadata zone can limit indexing even when disk space remains.

Define an outage policy
Decide whether a stale public response may be served during an upstream failure and test that behavior before an incident. Do not apply the same fallback to account, checkout, or administrative responses. Any resilience feature must preserve the public/private boundary and be visible in logs so operators know when stale content is being used.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Users see another user’s content | Authentication or cookie-bearing requests entered a shared cache, or the key omitted a personalization dimension | Edge rules, proxy_cache_bypass, proxy_no_cache, response cookies, and the full key |
| Hit ratio is unexpectedly low | Irrelevant query strings, cookies, hosts, or headers split one object into many keys | Request samples and key dimensions; normalize only parameters that never change the body |
| Updates appear late | TTL is longer than the deployment process, or purge/revalidation is missing | Edge and NGINX validity, versioned URLs, purge records, and ETag/Last-Modified behavior |
| Origin spikes after expiry | Many edge locations fetch independently, or the key has many variants | Tiered Cache configuration, miss geography, query and cookie variation, and origin concurrency |
| Disk fills despite a large keys zone | Metadata capacity and response-byte capacity were sized as if they were the same | max_size, filesystem usage, cache-manager activity, and object sizes |
| Preview or debug output becomes public | The bypass condition was applied to serving but not storage, or the parameter was omitted from the rule | Both bypass and no-cache conditions, exact parameter names, and purge any contaminated objects |
What to measure after launch
Review dashboards by URL class rather than relying on one site-wide number. At the edge, track cache ratio and hit, miss, revalidation, and expiration outcomes. On the VPS, track NGINX cache status, upstream request rate, response latency, status codes, disk usage, and metadata-zone pressure. At the application, track database time, queue depth, worker saturation, and error rate.
Compare a representative baseline with the same workload after each change. A successful cache change should reduce unnecessary origin work without increasing stale or incorrect responses. If latency falls but origin errors rise, or the hit ratio rises while users report wrong content, treat the change as a correctness failure and roll it back.
Practical decision framework
- Only static files are busy: start with browser and edge caching, version filenames, and use the VPS cache as a local safety net.
- Public HTML is expensive to render: add a narrow, explicit public-page policy at the edge and NGINX with short validity, revalidation, and a tested purge process.
- Traffic is global and misses are synchronized: use an upper/lower edge tier arrangement and investigate key fragmentation before adding more origin capacity.
- Database work remains expensive after HTTP caching: profile the application and add an object or application cache only for measured hot paths.
- Responses vary by user or permission: keep them out of shared caches unless you can define and test a complete, bounded key for every variation.
Costs, capacity, and operational trade-offs
Cloud edge caching and a VPS disk cache consume different resources. Edge caching can reduce bandwidth and request bursts reaching the VPS, while NGINX storage consumes local disk and metadata memory. Tiering can reduce duplicate origin fetches but adds another cache layer to observe and purge. Longer TTLs reduce origin work but increase the time a deployment can remain stale. More key dimensions improve isolation but lower reuse. Treat each choice as a measurable trade-off, not a universally “faster” setting.
Start with capacity that leaves headroom for logs, temporary files, deployments, and the operating system. Watch real object sizes and churn before changing keys_zone or max_size. No published threshold applies to every high-traffic VPS; capacity should follow your object count, response sizes, request mix, and measured origin load.
Bottom line
Build the cache in layers, begin with public immutable assets, and make every broader rule earn its place through testing. Cloudflare’s edge rules and tiering can absorb geographically distributed repeats; NGINX’s disk cache can serve repeat requests locally; application caching belongs only on profiled hot paths. The safeguards that make this architecture dependable are explicit cache keys, authorization and cookie bypasses, status-aware TTLs, revalidation or versioned URLs, and a purge and deployment procedure you have exercised before traffic depends on it.
