If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall CrossFire from its official installer instead of copying a DLL into System32.
What this file actually does
Public file records identify AegisDll64.dll as a 64-bit DLL, but do not verify its exact version, size, publisher metadata, internal description, digital signature, or exported functions. A CrossFire installation inventory places it beside files such as Aegis.exe, Aegis64.exe, and AegisDll.dll, normally within a CrossFire installation folder such as:
C:Program FilesZ8GamesCrossFire
Your region or installation choices may use a different path.
This is not a Windows system DLL or a Microsoft runtime component. It should not normally be copied to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The 64 in its name indicates a 64-bit file; SysWOW64 primarily contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, despite the confusing directory name.

The error can appear after a failed CrossFire patch, an incomplete installation, antivirus quarantine, permission problems, or a missing dependency. The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by AegisDll64.dll is missing, even when the named file is present.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appeared after a patch or reinstall | Incomplete or corrupted CrossFire files | Perform a clean reinstall |
| Windows Security lists the file in Protection history | Quarantine or deletion | Verify the detection, then reinstall CrossFire |
| The launcher works only as administrator | Permissions or security software interference | Run the official launcher as administrator |
| “The specified module could not be found” while the file exists | A dependent module is missing | Reinstall the complete game before chasing runtimes |
| The DLL is outside the CrossFire folder | Wrong copy, tampering, or malware | Do not whitelist it; scan and reinstall |
| Other unrelated Windows programs also fail | Broader Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| The game fails after a graphics or Windows change | Driver or system change | Update drivers through the hardware vendor or Device Manager |
Fix 1: Cleanly reinstall CrossFire
For this file, a clean repair is the most reliable fix because the matching Aegis files must come from the same CrossFire client. Do not replace only AegisDll64.dll; mismatched anti-cheat files can leave the game unable to start.
Before removing the game, back up screenshots and replays stored in CrossFire’s Documents folder. A clean installation may remove user files there.
- Press
Windows + Ito open Settings. - Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Find CrossFire.
- Select the three-dot menu, choose Uninstall, and complete the official uninstall process.
- Restart Windows.
- Open File Explorer and check the old CrossFire installation location.
- Remove only leftover CrossFire folders. Do not delete unrelated folders merely because they contain similarly named files.
- If the clean-install instructions for your CrossFire client use a Documents folder, preserve your screenshots and replays before removing that folder.
- Download the current CrossFire client from the official Z8Games/CrossFire source.
- If the download is split into multiple installation parts, download all parts before starting.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install CrossFire to the desired location.
- Restart Windows once more, then launch the game from the official launcher.
How to tell whether it worked
The launcher should recreate AegisDll64.dll alongside the other Aegis files inside the CrossFire directory. CrossFire should proceed past the missing-file message and begin its normal startup.
If the file is still absent immediately after installation, do not download it separately. Check Windows Security next, because protection software may have removed it during installation.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a game anti-cheat component. Restoring a file blindly is not safe, particularly if the copy came from an unofficial installer or is located outside the CrossFire directory.

- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
AegisDll64.dll, CrossFire, or an Aegis-related detection. - Expand the entry and inspect its path, detection name, and action.
- If the file came from the official CrossFire installation folder and the installation source is trusted, use Restore only after verifying those details.
- If Windows Security offers Allow on device, use it only when you have confirmed the file is the legitimate game component.
- Run the CrossFire launcher again and allow it to repair or redownload the file if that option is available.
A safer approach is to reinstall CrossFire from the official client and then add only the official CrossFire installation folder as an exclusion if the vendor specifically requires it.
To add a narrowly scoped exclusion:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
- Scroll to Exclusions and select Add or remove exclusions.
- Select Add an exclusion, then Folder.
- Choose the CrossFire installation folder.
- Re-enable protection immediately if it was temporarily disabled for installation.
Do not exclude the entire drive, the Windows directory, or a downloaded DLL. If the file is repeatedly quarantined, treat that as a security issue and run a full scan rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Run the launcher with the required permissions
A valid file can still fail to load when the launcher cannot access the installation folder or when security software blocks part of the startup sequence.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to the CrossFire installation folder.
- Right-click the official launcher.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start CrossFire from that launcher.
If this works, the problem was probably related to permissions or interference during startup. Do not permanently disable Microsoft Defender or your firewall. If security software is blocking the launcher, create a narrowly scoped rule for the official CrossFire folder only after confirming the installation is genuine.
Close overlays and conflicting background applications before testing again. A clean Windows restart is also worthwhile.
Fix 4: Repair the complete game rather than installing random runtimes
There is no verified evidence that AegisDll64.dll is supplied by Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, Windows Update, or a graphics driver. Those components should not be your first repair for this particular error.

If the message names another file, use that file to guide the next step. For example, an error naming VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll can justify installing the supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package from Microsoft. Install the architecture required by the application, then restart Windows.
If the message names only AegisDll64.dll, reinstall CrossFire first. Reinstalling unrelated runtimes can add changes without restoring the matching Aegis files.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when broader problems exist
Use Windows repair commands when other applications are also failing, Windows updates are damaged, or system files show signs of corruption. These commands do not specifically recreate a missing CrossFire DLL.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands complete.
- Test CrossFire again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. If both commands report that no integrity violations were found, return to the CrossFire reinstall and antivirus steps rather than repeating them indefinitely.

Do not use Windows Features to enable or disable random components for this file. AegisDll64.dll is not established as a Windows optional feature.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall drivers when the failure followed a system change
A graphics driver is not known to supply AegisDll64.dll, but a broken driver can cause separate game startup failures. Use this step when CrossFire began failing after a graphics, chipset, network, or Windows change, or when other games show display-related errors.

Check drivers through Device Manager
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for relevant entries under Network adapters and System devices.
- Restart Windows and test CrossFire.
For a clean reinstall, download the driver directly from the graphics or computer manufacturer, uninstall the existing driver only when the manufacturer’s instructions call for it, then restart and install the current package.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what it finds, while driver installation through its full version is optional. This does not replace reinstalling CrossFire, which remains the correct repair for a missing game DLL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Scan for a tampered or misplaced copy
AegisDll64.dll should normally be inside the CrossFire installation directory. A copy found in System32, SysWOW64, Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- Remove or quarantine anything Microsoft Defender identifies.
- Reinstall CrossFire from its official source after the scan completes.
Do not whitelist an unknown copy merely because its filename matches. A renamed or modified DLL can have the same filename while being the wrong build or a security threat.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose DLL repair command. It applies to DLLs that expose registration interfaces, such as certain COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that AegisDll64.dll is a self-registering COM DLL.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not run:
regsvr32 AegisDll64.dll
Registering it will not rebuild the CrossFire installation and may produce another error. Likewise, copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts without fixing the game.
If CrossFire still will not start
After reinstalling, check these details:
- Confirm the launcher is using the installation folder you repaired.
- Search for multiple leftover CrossFire folders and remove obsolete copies.
- Review Windows Security Protection history again.
- Confirm the exact error text, including whether it says “missing,” “not found,” or “specified module could not be found.”
- Check whether the file exists in the CrossFire folder.
- Restart Windows after security or driver changes.
- If the problem began after a system-wide change, press
Windows + R, enterrstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Choose a restore point from before the failure and follow the System Restore wizard.
System Restore can roll back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without removing personal files, but it is not a substitute for reinstalling CrossFire.

FAQ
Is aegisdll64.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a Windows component or Microsoft runtime. It is associated with the CrossFire installation and its Aegis anti-cheat files.
Is it safe to download the DLL from a DLL website?
No. A standalone download may be malicious, modified, the wrong architecture, or from the wrong regional CrossFire build. It also may not include a dependency that caused the error. Restore the file through the official CrossFire installer instead.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Keep it in the CrossFire installation directory. Copying it into System32 or SysWOW64 does not repair the game.
Does AegisDll64.dll mean I need Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not necessarily. No direct evidence links this particular DLL to those packages. Reinstall CrossFire first. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error explicitly names a runtime file or the game’s official requirements call for it.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
The message may refer to a dependent module. Reinstall the complete CrossFire client, check antivirus interference, and avoid replacing individual DLLs.
