For a self-managed, low-cost starting point, Amazon Lightsail lists a Linux/Unix instance for $5 USD per month, including 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD storage and 1 TB of transfer. That is a price reference, not proof that the smallest instance can encode your particular sermon stream reliably. The right setup depends on whether you are looping a recording or sending a live camera-and-microphone feed, plus the video settings, region and support you need.

Choose the right kind of cloud setup
A VPS is a virtual server you configure and operate yourself. For a recorded sermon loop, the basic path is:

The VPS hosts the encoder process; YouTube receives the feed and automatically transcodes live streams into output formats for viewers. A VPS does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming: you remain responsible for the process, server, network path, monitoring and recovery.
A live camera-and-microphone sermon is a different workflow. It needs a reliable contribution path from the capture location to the cloud encoder; the title alone does not establish what camera, capture equipment or network setup you have. Do not assume that a low-cost VPS can replace equipment or connectivity at the venue.

These are the listed plan specifications, not a tested encoding recommendation. The source format, codec, resolution, encoder settings and actual server workload are unknown, so there is no basis to say this instance will handle every stream. Account for outbound transfer
The stream feed sent from your VPS to YouTube uses transfer. AWS counts both inbound and outbound traffic toward the Lightsail allowance; only excess outbound traffic is charged. AWS lists half the usual allowance in Asia Pacific regions Mumbai, Sydney, Jakarta, Malaysia and Hong Kong, and in South America (São Paulo). See AWS’s Lightsail data-transfer rules for the accounting details. Your usage depends on bitrate, region, billing period and any other traffic, so the advertised allowance alone does not establish your total cost.
No cost-per-hour estimate is useful without a specified stream bitrate, region and transfer accounting. Compare plans on monthly price and included transfer, CPU and memory suitability, region and network path, operational effort, recovery options, and potential overage—not price alone. The figures above are one provider’s published example, not a full market comparison.

Set YouTube ingest settings before testing
YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not above four seconds. The relevant H.264 figures include:

These are YouTube’s published encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode at the selected resolution. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before configuring your encoder.

Use RTMPS and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the RTMPS stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifies port 443; RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL.
- Configure the encoder on the VPS to send to the YouTube ingest URL using that key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Confirm the selected video and audio settings, then start a test feed and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on it for a service.

Test the complete setup before a sermon
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
- Confirm your channel is eligible to use YouTube Live before scheduling the stream.
- Test the exact media source, resolution, bitrate and duration you intend to use. A short successful test does not establish that a long-running stream will remain healthy.
- Check CPU and memory use on the instance while the encoder runs, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Arrange a way to notice a stopped encoder or unhealthy feed, and configure an automatic process restart if your operating setup supports it.
- Rehearse recovery after an encoder-process, instance or network interruption. The setup should have a clear path to restart the feed and verify that YouTube is receiving it again.
Monitoring and restart configuration reduce the chance that a failure goes unnoticed, but a self-managed VPS is not an uptime guarantee. The sources cited here do not establish a particular restart product or availability figure.

- YouTube receives no video: verify the ingest URL, stream key, encoder destination and RTMPS connection. Recheck that you copied the current key from Live Control Room.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: inspect the encoder’s bitrate, CBR setting, keyframe interval and the server’s CPU and memory load. Compare them with YouTube’s published settings and test at a lower resolution if the workload is too heavy.
- The stream stops after running for a while: check whether the encoder process exited, the VPS was interrupted, or its network path failed. Review monitoring and restart behavior, then confirm stream health after recovery.
- Unexpected transfer charges: check the region’s allowance and actual outbound usage, including the half-allowance regions listed by AWS. Only excess outbound Lightsail transfer is charged, but the feed’s bitrate and other traffic affect how much allowance remains.
- The recording has no sound or movement: test the actual file and audio track rather than relying on a static or silent test. YouTube specifically advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream.
Copyright and YouTube policy still apply
A cloud server changes where the encoder runs; it does not grant rights to sermon recordings, music, images or other material included in the stream. Use media you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before going live. A 24/7 loop does not remove those obligations.
