Switch back to the live program when the next service begins. This is an encoder-side workflow, not a special YouTube holding-screen feature; rehearse it in your chosen encoder before using it on a service.
Choose between one continuous stream and separate service pages
| What you want | Workflow | What viewers see |
|---|---|---|
| One watch page that stays live through the interval | Keep the encoder connected and the YouTube broadcast active; show a holding scene between services. | The same live page remains the destination while the holding image or video is on screen. |
| A distinct watch page for each service | Schedule each stream separately. You can consider YouTube Live Redirect to send viewers from the ended stream to the next live stream or a Premiere. | Separate pages; Redirect can guide viewers to the next destination. Set up the Premiere before the live stream if that is the destination. |
Decide based on whether the church wants one continuous session and URL or a separate page for each service. Archive visibility is a separate decision made after the event.
Set up a holding scene in your encoder
- Prepare the holding media. Create an encoder scene with a church-approved still image or a looped announcement video. Mute its audio, or use only background audio the church is properly licensed to play. YouTube does not prescribe the scene design or its duration.
- Test both transitions. Before the service, switch from the live camera or program scene to the holding scene and back. Check the preview before starting, then monitor the stream during the event. The exact controls depend on your encoder.
- Start the YouTube broadcast and encoder. Confirm the intended stream is active before relying on the holding scene between services.
- During the interval, keep the broadcast active. Use the encoder’s scene or source controls to put the holding output on air. Do not choose End Stream just to create an intermission: ending the broadcast stops the live feed.
- Resume the service. Switch the encoder output back to the live program when the next service begins.
- After the final service, end the event. End the stream on YouTube, then stop the encoder. YouTube Help’s live-streaming guidance says to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube.
The holding-scene approach follows from YouTube’s encoder workflow, but YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universal scene-switching procedure or guarantee that a stream can remain live indefinitely. Encoder behavior can differ, so rehearse with the equipment and software your church actually uses.
Separate the live intermission from the replay
An “ended” broadcast and a replay still visible on your channel are different issues. A holding scene changes what viewers see while the broadcast remains live; archive controls affect the recorded video after the event. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours. In YouTube Studio, you can change an archive’s visibility or delete it if you do not want the replay displayed.

Does reusing a stream key keep the services continuous?
No. YouTube permits encoders to use a stream key and allows custom stream keys to be reused, but reusing a key alone does not make separate services one continuous broadcast. If you want a single session, keep the broadcast active through the interval and switch scenes. If you want separate watch pages, schedule separate streams and consider Live Redirect.
Copyright and holding media
Use only images, announcements, music, and other media the church has permission to stream. A looped video or background track is still content in the broadcast; a holding scene does not remove the need to consider copyright. YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a church-specific holding-screen design or licensing rule, so confirm rights for each item with its rights holder or the church’s appropriate adviser.

Troubleshooting between services
- The page says the broadcast ended. The stream was ended on YouTube or the encoder stopped sending the feed. For an intermission, leave the broadcast active and switch to the holding scene instead of ending it.
- The holding image or video does not appear. The encoder may still be outputting the live camera scene, or the holding source may not be ready. Check the active scene and preview, then test the switch before the next service.
- The stream stops when the operator changes scenes. Scene changes should be rehearsed in the chosen encoder. Verify that the operator is changing the program output rather than stopping the encoder or ending the YouTube event.
- Viewers land on the prior service’s page. If each service needs its own page, schedule the next stream and consider Live Redirect. If the next destination is a Premiere, set it up before the live stream.
- The completed replay remains on the channel. Manage the archive in YouTube Studio by changing its visibility or deleting it. This does not change what viewers saw during the live interval.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos; it does not stream a live camera feed. So it is not a replacement for an encoder carrying your live church service. If your church also wants a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream between services, the steps are: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded videos stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start the free day.

Can the holding scene be a still image instead of a video?
Yes. A prepared still image is one encoder-side option; a looped announcement video is another.
